phd Isaac Newton / greenhouse lab

I need two lab reports – please follow instructions provided.

Objective:

To have students observe the greenhouse effect and analyze its effect on Earth.

Time:

This lab will take approximately 1 hour.

Materials:

·      2- or 3-liter plastic soda bottles (3 bottles per group)

·      Lamp (100 watt or greater)

·      One-hole stopper that fits in the mouth of the bottle

·      1 sheet of black paper and 1 sheet of white paper

·      Thermometer

·      Ruler or meter stick

·      Tape

Procedure:

1.    Each group should obtain a plastic soda bottle.  Take the stopper and insert it into the mouth of the bottle.

2.    CAREFULLY insert the thermometer into the stopper so that it hangs in the middle of the bottle.  You might want to use petroleum jelly to help get the thermometer through the stopper without breaking it.

3.    Record the initial temperature of the air in the bottle before turning on the lamp.

4.    Position the bottle so that it is 15 cm from the lamp.

5.    Turn the light on and watch the temperature change.  Once the temperature has not changed for approximately 3 minutes, record the final temperature in the data table that follows.

6.    Take the white piece of paper and wrap it around half of the second bottle.  Tape the paper on.  Repeat steps 4 to 6 and record.

7.    Take the black piece of paper and wrap it around half of the third bottle.  Tape the paper on.  Repeat steps 4 to 6 and record.

Data:

Bottle

Initial temperature

Final temperature

Without paper

With white paper

With black paper

Analysis:

1.    How do the bottles represent Earth?

2.    Explain the natural greenhouse effect and why it is important to our planet. How many degrees would earth be different without the Greehouse effect?

3.    Why did the lab have you cover the bottle with white and black paper?  What does this represent?

4.    List all the chemicals that have been linked to climate change, both natural and anthropogenic. Differentiate between GWP of different gases.

5.     How is global warming affecting the environment? What are major impacts on the environment caused by climate change?

  1. Review the following passage from your textbook, followed by a rewritten summary:

ORIGINAL AUTHOR’S THOUGHTS
Social psychologists use the scientific method—a hypothesis, or testable prediction, is developed and then tested using observational, correlational, or experimental methods.  These different methods answer different kinds of questions.  Observational methods answer questions relating to what is happening.  Correlational methods look at relationships between variables, enabling prediction.  Correlation, however, does not allow us to determine causation.  With the experimental method, researchers manipulate one variable, the independent variable, and measure the effect of that manipulation through assessment of the dependent variable.  At times, once one knows the results of a research study, those results may seem obvious, but people tend to fall short when truly predicting results beforehand.  This sense that “you knew it all along” is called the hindsight bias.  In research, attention is paid to potential ethical issues.  Researchers have their research plans checked by an institutional review board, and participants provide informed consent and are debriefed at the end of the participation.

LASA 2 Conflict Management Report

LASA 2 – Conflict Management Report

The workplace can be an especially stressful environment. Personal conflicts between coworkers, fear of layoffs, and heavy workloads can be causes of negative stress. This stress can be carried to our homes and after-work activities, impacting personal health. Allowing these stressors to build and intensify will only further impair the work environment. For this assignment, you are required to review a scenario regarding a woman (Kate) who has experienced negative stress stemming from her work environment. Then, you will compare your own conflict management skills and experiences against Kate’s experiences. Follow the directions below to write an 8 page report on conflict management.

Review the following scenario:

Kate has been employed by a well-known manufacturing company for 12 years. She is the only female on her line and the fastest worker. She has been promoted several times through mergers and acquisitions, but has always been looked over for a senior management position. Kate believes she is qualified for advancement but thinks her manager has a problem with her personally. To top it off, Kate did not receive a semiannual or annual review, which would have resulted in a raise. Her coworkers (all males) have urged her to go to management and report what she believes to be discriminatory behavior from her immediate manager.

Now, complete the following tasks:

1.     Discuss a situation you have been in where you felt you were passed over for a promotion, made to feel indifferent, or were discriminated against. Compare and contrast your story with Kate’s.

2.     Compare the possible ethical breaches of Kate’s manager against your own manager’s behavior. Utilize scholarly research on leadership theory as justification.

3.     Compare the possible legal breaches of Kate’s manager against your own manager’s behavior. Utilize scholarly research on leadership theory as justification.

4.     Recommend an approach Kate could have used to manage the negative risk both personally and professionally.

5.     Evaluate the advice Kate received from her coworkers.

6.     Referring to the conflict resolution strategies taught in this course, determine which one is best suited to resolve Kate’s conflict. Justify your position.

7.     In the chart below, evaluate your conflict resolution skills from the past five years. Rate yourself on a scale from 1–5, where 1 represents low performing and 5 represents high performing.

Conflict Resolution Approach

Rate Yourself (1–5)

o    Preventing the conflict

o    Suppressing the conflict

o    Avoiding the conflict

o    Using false emotions for distracting the conflict

o    Eliminating the conflict

o    Accepting the conflict

o    Recognizing the value of the conflict

o    Encouraging interpersonal criticism

o    Managing the conflict

8.     Select one conflict resolution approach in which you ranked the lowest and develop an individual improvement plan for that approach.

9.     Explain how the mediation process could strengthen your conflict resolution and management skills.

10.   Discuss how the arbitration process could strengthen your conflict resolution and management skills.

11.   Implement some portion of your plan. Provide a detailed summary of the changes that occurred in your development as it relates to your ability to handle conflict.

Write an 8–10-page report in Word format. Utilize at least four scholarly sources (in addition to your textbook) to complete your research, referencing them within the text and at the end in a reference list. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Make sure you write in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship through accurate representation and attribution of sources; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Student 1

After watching the movie ” Me voy pal Norte” I learned that Puerto Ricans were the first group who immigrate to new York city on nineteen  century as fact of the relocation of the factories in the  North of US.  Puerto Rican community historically represented a high rate of unemployment and poverty across the country.   One of the factors that influenced in the the lower socio-economic status of this community has being the  poor educational attainment skills and language disparities. However, New York has been the gateway city in the United States for the  Puerto Rican  migration as well as the locus for significant proportion of the Puerto Ricans working Class population that it is being able to settle down here regardless of the obstacles and economy struggles.

Also, I think that the article “Puerto Rican presence wanes in New York city” by Mireya Navarro is very meaningful in terms of remarking the tight attachment beyond New York city and Puerto Ricans roots.  Navarro highlights the Puerto Rican community’s  effort to preserve their culture and traditions in certain places in the city that are known as Spanish neighborhood such as “El barrio”.  The author express themes like the pride of Puerto Ricans for being here for so many years and still embracing their Hispanic heritage, maintaining their gastronomy, music and language.  The article support the idea that Puerto Rican people represents Hispanic identity in NYC at some point.  However, that was mostly between 19 and 20st century because immigrants population is  expanding across the country and the concentration of immigrant population in New York city now is divided towards Mexican,Dominicans and Puerto Ricans.

The article also refers to Puerto Ricans struggle to a fair achievement gap which it’s not an exclusive problem of Puerto Rican People if not a problem of the whole Latinos community who are victims of the same patterns of exclusion,  discrimination and lock of opportunities.

The reason why Puerto Ricans are moving to state like la Florida is simple,  and those are economy reasons ,Puerto Ricans are looking to move into states that pays no states  tax like is the case of the state of La Florida;  therefore,  looking  for  a places  easier to find jobs.

NYC community is  changing as a result of many demographic changes turning NYC city as very unique state that is a symbol diversity and tolerance.  Also severals  organization that represent the different immigrants groups that  continues to grow are getting together to promote laws that generate socio-economic changes to benefit minorities.

Student 2

Latinos are a dominant force in the United States society. Millions of Latinos reside in America. Many come for better opportunities not only for themselves but their families. Promises of better jobs, wages, schools, and living conditions have attracted not only Latino immigrants to come to the United States but almost all immigrants. Puerto Ricans are said to be the first Latino group to arrive in New York in the early-mid 1900s. Puerto Ricans began to arrive in the Northeast and north central region of the United States in hopes of working in the United States. They arrived in hopes of working manufacturing jobs. Unfortunately, their timing was not impeccable. The manufacturing industry began a steady decline in the 1950s in the Northeast. Most manufacturing in the Northeast and north central region of the United States decreased and factories began to move to the south and places where labor was cheaper. This created major poverty for the Puerto Ricans who came to the United States in hopes of better wages and jobs in general. A lot of the Puerto Ricans who arrived had little to any education, which would present an issue in finding other jobs.

Studies have shown many Puerto Rican in the United States have faced poverty. In the late 1900s Puerto Ricans had a high unemployment rate in the United States. Studies suggest that because Puerto Ricans arrived as American citizens they were given benefits that were not granted to other immigrants such as welfare. Many relate the idea of Puerto Ricans receiving welfare with the high level of poverty within the Puerto Rican community because many became comfortable with being on government assistance rather than working a low paying job. Sociologists believe this attributed to the cycle of poverty within the Puerto Rican community in the United States.

Many Puerto Ricans in the United States have left from New York for other parts of the Northeast and to other states like Florida, and New Jersey. Many have questioned why this has occurred. The theories that have been created to justify this occurence are the ideas of better jobs in other places, better school, education, and family ties. Many also move to Puerto Rico. There are more jobs in Puerto Rico now than there was in the 1900s. Many also go to retire in their homeland.

Because there are less Puerto Rican in New York than there was a decade ago, or even two decades ago, New York has gained a more diverse Latino community. New York has begun to see higher numbers of Dominican, South and Central Americans, and Mexicans. The decrease of Puerto Ricans have created what is essentially more room for other Latinos to come in and has reshaped the Latino community in NYC.

  1. Analyze one of your own attitudes/biases using one or more theoretical perspectives presented in the chapter.  For example, you might differentiate implicit versus explicit attitudes, point out how self-perception theory explains attitude formation, appraise attitude change using cognitive dissonance, or diagram a model to predict behavior using the theory of planned behavior.   Be sure to identify thoughts about and feelings toward the target of your attitude, as well as behavioral tendencies.
  1. Illustrate the following in your analysis:
      • Why do you hold this attitude?
      • How did it develop?
      • Has it changed over time?  Why or why not?  Do you expect it to change in the future?
      • What are some of the social factors that influence this attitude?
      • To what extent does this attitude impact your behavior?
      • How can understanding the “why” of differing attitudes between diverse populations help us to grow as people?

Scenario for Assignments 1-3
Assume that you are the curriculum designer for a school district. The school board has requested that several teams develop proposals for new curricula to meet newly established state standards. You and your team must develop the first proposal to provide as a pilot or model for the other teams. You have to first identify a specific curriculum area not currently used in the school district that would greatly benefit the students in the district. Use the Internet or the Strayer Library as well as your textbook to develop a pilot curriculum for a specific discipline area (reading, math, science, etc.) or grade level (K-12) at a local school district.

Assignment 2: Curriculum Foundations
Due Week 6 and worth 300 points

Refer to the Scenario for Assignments 1-3. Build on the same pilot curriculum you identified in Assignment 1 for this assignment.

Write a six to seven (6-7) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the following aspects of Assignment 1:
    1. Describe the specific curriculum area and grade level(s) for the pilot curriculum
    2. Provide four (4) core instructional goals for the curriculum.
  2. Describe the approach to curriculum development (i.e., behavior, systems, humanistic) you will use to shape curriculum design, providing a rationale for your selected approach that is consistent with the core instructional goals of the planned curriculum.
  3. Describe the philosophical / theoretical approach to curriculum development (idealism, realism, etc.) you will use to shape the curriculum design, providing a rationale for your selected philosophy that is consistent with the core instructional goals of the planned curriculum.

Cricital Review of Book

Hall, R. & Moore, D. (2006). Same kind of different as me. Nashville: Thomas Nelson, Inc.

After reading this book, critically think about the major character. The goal of this assignment is to evidence mastery of the course material by applying a theory that explains the behavior of the major character of the book. Special attention should be given to the impact that diversity has had on the major character. Students should analyze the character within a person-in-environment/ecological framework and discuss the relevance of the various theories studied in Human Behavior Social Environment  I.

Questions that should be addressed in the written paper include, but not be limited to the following:

A. How does the character display typical issues of that stage of human development?

Freud-Stage of psychosexual development

Erickson-Stages of psychological crises

Kohlberg-Stage of moral development

Use any material from the text that describes your chosen theory, and compare it to the character. For example, discuss the importance of peer groups to an adolescent, discuss the effect of school competence to a child in middle school, or discuss the career crisis of a woman in mid-life who develops a disability, etc. What other conflicts are evident in the role (race, gender, ethnicity, age, class, color, disability, family structure, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, religion) or norms of the character? Is the character’s behavior in conflict with group, cultural, or ethnic norms of his/her family or community system?

B. What is the nature of the interactions of the character with other systems (i.e. family, community, formal organizations and society)? How does this shape his/her development and functioning? What is the socioeconomic status of the family or character? How does that impact the character’s development? Are there patterns of abuse, neglect, and /or addiction on the part of the character or his/her family members/ How does that affect the character’s development? How does your chosen theory explain this?

C. Think of another theory that may offer explanation to the behavior of the client in your chosen book. How is this theory similar/different than your previous theory? Provide excerpts from text to help support your argument.

This paper can be organized into the three sections described above.
