Juvenile Delinquent

Dropbox Assignment

Assignment 1: LASA 2: Setting Minds at Ease

Here’s What Happened . . .

On the first of May this year, Centervale Police Officer Smith arrested Rosie Greene, a 15-year-old, for stealing several items from a local convenience store. This was just one of several incidents Rosie has been involved in this year. The majority of Rosie’s incidents have been centered on her schoolwork, fights, loitering, and truancy.

The principal has suspended Rosie several times from school. However, Rosie continues to engage in delinquent behaviors. Rosie’s arrest has been widely publicized in the newspaper and on television because Rosie ran from the police after they caught up with her while being truant from school and smoking behind a pizza shop.

You have been working with Centervale’s City Government to propose a plan to reduce juvenile delinquency and prevent further incidents of younger children becoming involved in delinquent behaviors as they grow up.

The principal has asked if you would help the School Board understand more about juvenile delinquency, the juvenile justice system, and particularly Rosie Greene’s situation to help them appropriately respond to parent’s questions and create a new policy. He has asked you to prepare a presentation for the Centervale City School Board’s next meeting.

Here’s What You Need to Do . . .

You are required to develop a 10–15 slide PowerPoint presentation with script for the Centervale City School Board. Use APA in-text citations and external sources that are referred to on a corresponding references slide and include the following:

  • Differentiate between the juvenile and adult justice systems by first defining the terms crime, delinquent act, and status offense. Because of the School Board’s familiarity with Rosie’s juvenile case, discuss the nature of her offenses by identifying which ones are crimes, delinquent acts, or status offenses.
  • Explain to the School Board the origin of juvenile rights and the process of juveniles’ rights while in custody. Address the concerns raised by the school board member who wondered what would happen to Rosie because she ran from the police. Did Rosie’s choice change her rights?
  • Compare and contrast juvenile rights to the rights of an adult under similar circumstances. Use Rosie’s case to illustrate to the School Board the similarities and differences of the juvenile and adult justice systems.
  • Summarize the juvenile courtroom process using Rosie’s case. Include Rosie’s rights, and identify the courtroom parties who will be present: lawyers, judge, etc. Predict a probable series of events for Rosie’s case and describe how the outcome might be different if Rosie were an adult.
  • Integrate in your presentation to the School Board your proposed Juvenile Delinquency Reduction Plan from LASA 1. Describe how the plan might address one or more of the issues presented in Rosie’s situation. Explain the steps in your plan that the School Board may find helpful in their plight to reduce juvenile delinquency throughout the Centervale School System.

Ashford University CRJ 510 Week 4 DQ2

Review the Center for Court Innovation website, and select one program that has been effective in aiding victims of crime, reduces crime, or strengthens neighborhoods.

Initial Post: As you examine the court initiated criminal justice policies, what do you see as the most promising programs? Determine how these programs affect the other parts of the criminal justice system—the police, corrections, or juvenile justice? Based on government budget priorities, how does the court fund these initiatives? What effect does court-directed revisions to criminal justice policies have on overall criminal justice reform? Support your claims with examples from the required materials and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite your references with both in-text and APA citation at the end of your post.

Guided Response: Review your peers’ posts, and substantively respond in a meaningful way to at least two of your peers. With today’s austere budgets at the local and federal levels, programs such as these come down to funding or reprioritizing funding. Assume you are the chief of police or the director of prisons; how do you prioritize innovative criminal justice policy initiatives such as those proposed by your classmate? What questions must be answered before you would be willing to prioritize this program ahead of funding for one of your programs or additional manning in your department? In your evaluation of your peers’ posts, are there issues that need to be addressed before you can support the court initiatives? Support your position with scholarly references. Respond to at least one Instructor Response in the discussion. Continue to monitor the discussion forum until 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Day 7, and respond with robust dialogue to anyone who replies to your initial post.

CRJ 180: Alternatives to Incarceration

Recent study illustrates that nearly two (2) million juveniles are processed through juvenile courts across the United States each year. Depending on the nature of the crime, juveniles may face detention or incarceration if they are convicted. Given the fact that many courts are reluctant to incarcerate criminal offenders, judges often consider alternatives to incarceration. The driving force behind these alternatives is to save taxpayer money yet still demand offender accountability and impose sanctions for criminal behavior.

Use the Internet or Strayer databases to research the use of sanctions other than incarceration or detention for juvenile offenders.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

1.Examine the underlying historical and economic reasons behind the quest for alternatives to incarcerating offenders in jails and prisons.

2.Describe three (3) alternatives to incarceration that juvenile courts currently use. Provide examples of such alternatives in practice to support the response.

3.Discuss the significant societal and individual benefits of imposing sanctions or punishments that do not involve removing an offender from his / her family or community.

4.Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

•Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.

•Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

•Explain how delinquents have been handled throughout history.

•Contrast the differences between the juvenile and adult justice system in the United States.

•Identify successful evidence-based treatment modalities for juvenile delinquents and be able to describe the ingredients of effective programs.

•Use technology and information resources to research issues in juvenile delinquency and justice.

•Write clearly and concisely about juvenile delinquency and justice using proper writing mechanics.

Assignment 2: Employment-At-Will Doctrine

Imagine you are a recently-hired Chief Operating Officer (COO) in a midsize company preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). You quickly discover multiple personnel problems that require your immediate attention.

  1. John posted a rant on his Facebook page in which he criticized the company’s most important customer.
  2. Ellen started a blog to protest the CEO’s bonus, noting that no one below director has gotten a raise in two (2) years and portraying her bosses as “know-nothings” and “out-of-touch”
  3. Bill has been using his company-issued BlackBerry to run his own business on the side.
  4. After being disciplined for criticizing a customer in an email (sent from his personal email account on a company computer), Joe threatens to sue the company for invasion of privacy.
  5. One of the department supervisors requests your approval to fire his secretary for insubordination. Since the secretary has always received glowing reviews, you call her into your office and determine that she has refused to prepare false expense reports for her boss.
  6. Anna’s boss refused to sign her leave request for jury duty and now wants to fire her for being absent without permission.

As an astute manager, you will need to analyze the employment-at-will doctrine and determine what, if any, exceptions and liabilities exist before taking any action. As you proceed with your investigation, you discover the company has no whistleblower policy.

In preparation for this assignment, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research your state’s employment-at-will policy.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize the employment-at-will doctrine discussed in the text and then evaluate three (3) of the six (6) scenarios described by determining:
    1. Whether you can legally fire the employee; include an assessment of any pertinent exceptions to the employment-at-will doctrine.
    2. The primary action(s) that you should take to limit liability and impact on operations; specify the ethical theory that best supports your decision.
  2. Examine your state’s policy on employment-at-will. Analyze at least one (1) real-world example of an employee or employer utilizing your state’s employment-at-will doctrine in the last five (5) years. Include a summary of the main issue and the outcome in the identified real-world example.
  3. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference and proprietary Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze and apply the concepts of freedom versus responsibility and ethical decision making.
  • Analyze and evaluate laws that protect against discrimination in the workplace.
  • Analyze and evaluate the employment-at-will doctrine and exceptions, as well as the protections afforded whistleblowers.
  • Explore the legal and ethical issues surrounding employee and consumer privacy.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in law, ethics, and corporate governance.
  • Write clearly and concisely about law, ethics, and corporate governance using proper writing mechanics.

Scenario:

Jill Jones is a bright 45-year-old woman who is the vice-president of sales in a mid-sized family owned Candy Corporation.  She began her career at the company right out of high school, and over the years earned two college degrees while working her way up the organizational ladder.

One day, Jill was stunned to learn that the firm’s head, William Potter, was considering placing his oldest son, Henry, in the position of CEO while he became chairman of the board. Years earlier, when Jill was in a middle management position, Henry had unsuccessfully propositioned her and made her life miserable. She had never mentioned the incident to anyone and had put it behind her when he was promoted to head the Miami branch of the business.  However, now as she looks at William Potter she becomes even more shocked to hear him say” I can’t be objective about him Jill, You have always been so loyal to the company and successful in hiring excellent people for the sales force I want you to review him objectively and give me your recommendation.” Conflicting thoughts rush through her mind, the awful past, the all so possible awful future with him as her boss, the clear knowledge that he has done a great job with the Miami branch, and of course the knowledge that he is the bosses son. What should she do?

“Jill” has just come up against one of the myriad ethical dilemmas companies of all sizes and their employees face on an ongoing basis. Deciding the best course of action might be easy in some cases, when there are clear-cut choices between “right” and “wrong.”  But there are many gray areas, like Jill’s, when it’s harder to know what the right choice is for you and your company.
