Research Planning Matrix

A matrix is a tool that can be used as a job aid in any number of positions within the criminal justice system. In this assignment, you will work with a matrix that will help you map out different types of research and identify when one or another research design might be useful. You will be able to use the completed matrix throughout the rest of this course as a quick reference when formulating a response for other course assignments.

Tasks:

Click here to download the Research Planning Matrix. The matrix lists six different research designs that have been identified by Kraska and Neuman (2008): survey, evaluation, existing document, experimental, historical, and interview. Each of the different research designs is defined for you. To complete the matrix, you must find an example of each type of research design. That is, you must find a journal article that fits into each category. In the Examples column of your matrix, place a web link or a citation in the APA format for each article. After you have located the articles, you must identify the data collection techniques used by each author, the quantitative and qualitative elements of each article, and the chief characteristics of each article. Please note that the first example, survey research, has been completed as an example.

  • Access the Research Planning Matrix and review the topics to be addressed.
  • Complete the matrix so that the end product compares the different research designs, data collection techniques, and quantitative and qualitative elements, as well as the chief characteristics of each research design.
  • Prepare a synthesis statement that outlines the most significant similarities and differences observed among the items shown in the matrix.

You will submit two documents for this assignment: the completed Research Planning Matrix, which will be submitted as a Microsoft Excel worksheet, and a synthesis statement, which will be

Week 3 Discussion 2

The purpose of this discussion is to give you the opportunity to apply ethical theories and perspectives to modern issues of the workplace. Off-duty conduct away from the workplace can be monitored and reported in many ways. These ways have only grown due to the increase in social media use, which provides employers far greater opportunities to become aware of what employees do outside of the workplace. Some types of behaviors are especially concerning, as they may have on-duty consequences. Other types of off-duty behavior, however, are more difficult to clearly define as grossly inappropriate and warranting employer intervention. But who draws this line, and what are the ethical implications of where the line is drawn? Prepare and post a response to the following prompt:

Using the resources provided, your own research, and your knowledge of the ethical concepts from the text, consider the issue of off-site monitoring of conduct:

  • Considering your own work experience, imagine a circumstance in which your supervisor monitored your behavior off the job. Describe the circumstances, including how and why your conduct was monitored.
  • Would you consider your example to involve a minor, moderate, or severe invasion of an individual’s privacy? Explain your reasoning. Share your unemotional, well-defined, evidence-based response to your boss to support your viewpoint.
  • What issues do you believe led to your employer monitoring you? Use one ethical theory or perspective to help support your employer’s viewpoint, and use a scholarly source as your evidence.
  • What about your viewpoint as the employee? Use one ethical theory or perspective to support an employee’s right to privacy outside of work, and use a scholarly source as your evidence.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required resources and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references in APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center

Module 1 discussion

n this module, you are required to read the article on Bivens from Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology. The purpose of this article is to understand that a law enforcement officer is not immune from civil lawsuits.

Where once police and law enforcement agencies thought themselves immune, civil lawsuits against law enforcement officers are quite common nowadays. These lawsuits are based on whether the law enforcement officers correctly followed the guidelines meant to protect the citizens, guaranteed by the Constitution.

The purpose behind Bivens is to some extent protect private citizens from police misconduct. The other side of the coin is that if we so circumscribe the actions of officers, citizens may not be protected from the criminal acts of others. The point of the assignment is for you to begin to recognize this balancing act.

What You Are Required to Do . . .

Research on the Internet or the Argosy University Online Library and find some cases where officers have been sued in civil court for failing to follow the guidelines meant to protect the citizens from police misconduct.

Submission Details:

By Saturday, September 10, 2016, in a minimum of 250 words, post your responses to the following topics in the Discussion Area.

  • Describe a lawsuit, the issues involved in the trial, and the verdict. Do you think public safety in terms of the safety of the public was improved? Why or why not?
  • As a law enforcement officer, what would your reaction be to being sued by a suspect in a case? How do you think that lawsuit would impact your personal life? How would you handle the pressure of being accused of violating the Constitution?
  • Do you think you might change the way you would act as a law enforcement official if you were aware that you could be sued by a suspect you apprehended? In what way would it impact your duties as a law enforcement official?

Biological and Psychological Theories of Crime

There are many reasons why a person commits a crime and many criminology theories from different disciplines attempt to explain the underlying reason for such behavior. Psychological theories point to abnormal or dysfunctional mental processes in a person’s personality. Although, it is important to take into consideration conditioning, role models, and the degree to which a person is acclimated to the norms of society that impact a person’s psychological make-up. Similarly, a biological perspective may attribute a person’s biology as the route cause of criminal behavior. Consider a man arrested on assault charges. His father is in prison for murder, his brother incarcerated due to drug charges, and he has paternal alcoholic uncle who is a registered sex offender. Proponents of biology theories may suggest a hereditary link between the men and criminal behavior. Although these are not the only theories that attempt to explain crime, they are important to consider as possible causes of crime and criminal behavior.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review Chapter 4 in your course text, Criminology Today, focusing on how biological theories might explain crime and criminal behavior.

Select a specific crime or criminal behavior that can be explained by some aspect of one or more biological theories.

Think about how one or more biological theories might account for the crime you selected.

Review Chapter 5 in your course text, Criminology Today, this time focusing on how psychological theories might explain crime and criminal behavior.

Think specifically about how one or more psychological theories might account for the crime you selected.

Select some combination of at least three biological and psychological factors to use for this Discussion.

With these thoughts in mind:

Write a brief description of the crime you selected. Describe one biological and one psychological theory might account for the crime and why. Be specific and use examples to illustrate your points.

Note: Include the theories (or factors of theories) that you selected in the first line of your post.

Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment and has put it on the market to be rented for $800.00 a month

Larry Landlord has recently renovated an apartment and has put it on the market to be rented for $800.00 a month. Larry Landlord has been in business for approximately five (5) years and has had both positive and negative experiences with tenants. Larry Landlord is hoping to find a good, long-term tenant for his apartment. Roger Renter saw Larry’s sign for the apartment for rent and thought the location and the apartment would be perfect. Roger met Larry to look at the apartment and Roger fell in love with it. All of the interior fixtures had been replaced and the unit had a nice large closet. Roger noticed that although newly painted, the exterior of the apartment did show a little bit of wear. Because of the condition of the exterior of the building, Roger asked Larry about any roof leaks. Larry stated that he had never had a leak and was not aware of any leaks.

Roger and Larry entered into a valid contract for the rental of the apartment. (Note: The issue of whether or not a contract exists is NOT part of this question. For purposes of this question assume the contract is valid and there are no issues with the contract.)

Roger Renter was very happy in his new location; the apartment was quiet and the neighbors were friendly. Larry Landlord was also very happy because Roger Renter was a model tenant. Roger Renter paid on time and was quiet and respectful to other tenants.

The part of the country where Roger rented was rainy in the summertime. Roger rented and moved into the apartment in October. In June, a tremendous rainstorm occurred and Roger’s roof began to leak. The leak was minor at first and Roger merely put a trash can under the leak and had no other issues that month. When handing over his monthly rent check, Roger told Larry about the small leak. Larry thanked Roger for letting him know about the leak and told Roger he would have it fixed.

The next month the rains came again and the leak grew larger in Roger’s apartment. Roger was not home at the time of the rain and therefore the leak damaged some of Roger’s furniture. Roger called Larry to let him know that there was a leak and asked when it might be fixed. Roger also stated that he thought Larry had fixed the roof. Larry curtly stated, “When it rains, sometimes it pours. When it pours, sometimes it leaks.” Roger did not like Larry’s tone or response and called back to ask when the roof might be fixed. Larry stated, “When I get to it.” The following day, Roger sent Larry a note about the roof leak and asked Larry to please address the issue.

The week before the rent was due, another rainstorm occurred and the leak was even larger. This time the leak damaged Roger’s clothing, furniture, and some precious items he had inherited from family members. Roger called Larry and asked Larry to fix roof immediately. Larry responded in a similar and condescending manner. Roger hung up the phone and threw his baseball bat against the wall, damaging the drywall and knocking out an electrical socket.

Since it was the rainy season, Roger knew it would rain again and therefore simply moved his items away from the leak and did nothing to help mitigate the damage from the leaking roof.

Larry came into the apartment to investigate the leak and found damage from not only the leak but also from the thrown baseball bat. Roger states that the baseball bat damage was a direct result of Larry’s inability to fix the leak based on his anger from Larry’s curt response.

Suppose you are a mediator. In five to seven (5-7) pages discuss the rights and responsibilities of the landlord and the tenant in which you:

  1. Explore the legal rights and responsibilities of the tenant and the landlord.
  2. Decide whether or not the landlord and / or the tenant had a legal duty to mitigate damages.
  3. Determine whether or not Larry has legal grounds to evict Roger. Explain why or why not.
  4. Describe whether or not Roger has a legal obligation to pay for the damage he caused and determine whether or not Larry would be liable for any direct damage.
  5. Support each response with facts presented in the scenario.
  6. Use proper legal terminology throughout your responses.
  7. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.
  8. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:
    • Typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
    • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page is not included in the required page length.
    • Include a reference page. Citations and references must follow APA format. The reference page is not included in the required page length.

DUE Tonight- Learning Patterns in Action

I am in need of ORIGINAL work……….. NO PLAGERISM………….. NO PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN WORK

My LCI Results:

Sequence (31)

Precise (25)

Technical (18)

Confluent (22)

I am a Strong Willed Learner

Strong Willed
If I use three or more patterns at the Use First level, I am a strong-willed learner. I am my own team. I prefer to work alone so that I can control the plan, the ideas, the talk, the decisions, the process, and the outcomes. I lead from out in front. Sometimes others find it hard to follow my lead. Approximately 1 in 10 people fall into this criteria

Example:
Person C:
Sequence-28 (use first)
Precision-28 (use first)
Technical-26 (use first)
Confluent-21 (as needed)

Prepare: Before attempting this discussion, please be sure you have completed the Learning Connections Inventory (LCI), then carefully read Chapter 2 and the Week Two Instructor Guidance(this is located on the left navigation menu under Week 2). In particular, pay attention to sections 2.1 and 2.2 which provide an overview of each of the four Learning Patterns: Sequence, Precision, Technical Reasoning, and Confluence.

Reflect: Your results of the LCI take the mystery out of how you learn and provide you with a set of terms to describe your learning processes accurately and thoroughly. The information gained from completing the LCI explains what you may have always known and felt about yourself as a learner, but may not have had the words to describe. As stated by your textbook author, “The knowledge of your Learning Patterns provides you with an explanation of how you learn, not an excuse for failing to put forth the effort to learn.” Take some time to think about what you learned about yourself based on your results from the LCI.

Write: Using the results of the Learning Connections Inventory (LCI), Tables 2.1 through 2.4, and the information you read in sections 2.1 and 2.2, address the following:

  • List your scores, your level of use (Use First, Use as Needed, or Avoid) for each of the four Learning Patterns, and identify whether you are a Dynamic, Bridge, or Strong-willed Learner.
  • Describe a specific time when you used each Pattern to accomplish a task. Each example should demonstrate how you Use First, Use as Needed, or Avoid the Pattern being described based on your results from the LCI. Your examples may be from your academic, personal, or professional experiences. Examples should consist of at least three to five sentences in order to give a complete picture of your thoughts, feelings, and actions associated with each Learning Pattern.
  • Analyze how the awareness of your Learning Patterns may help you in school, work, and/or personal relationships. How can you use this knowledge to be more intentional in these areas? In other words, what can be done to make positive changes in your life right now?

Your initial post should contain a minimum of 250 words and be written in complete sentences.

Paper on Internatioal Crimes

Assignment 2: International Crime Witness, Part 1

Use the Internet to research criminal proceedings in England. Imagine you are traveling abroad in your chosen country when you witness a local national committing a violent assault. The criminal is arrested and charged by the police.

Upon returning to the United States, a professor in one of your criminal justice classes asks you to complete a written report on your experience.

Write a three to five (4) page paper in which you:

  1. Determine the pertinent demographic, social, political, and economic factors about your chosen country.
  2. Examine the manner in which your chosen country’s criminal code would likely view the crime you witnessed. Provide a rationale for the response.
  3. Choose two (2) individual rights that the United States grants criminal suspects, such as search and seizure, right to counsel, etc., and analyze the country’s perspective on each right. Provide support for the analysis.
  4. Investigate the manner in which the police in your chosen country would likely treat the defendant. Provide justification for the response.
  5. Classify the fundamental similarities and differences between the police culture in your chosen country compared to the United States.
  6. Use at least four (4) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Compare and contrast American perspectives on criminal law with those of other countries.
  • Evaluate the nature of comparative policing and global law enforcement cooperation.
  • Analyze the role of procedural law in the four (4) major legal traditions.
  • Use technology and information resources to research comparative perspectives in criminal justice.
  • Write clearly and concisely about criminal justice topics using proper writing mechanics and APA style conventions.

What About the Contract?

Maynard, 18, was shopping for his first car. With a mere $4,000, he was hoping for a deal. He found a used convertible 1979 Mustang at Pierre’s Awesome Car Place for $5,000. Pierre claimed that the Mustang was “one of a kind” and “the best car in town.” He said “the engine and brakes are in tip-top shape.” Pierre even promised to bring the price down to $4,000, if Maynard agreed to buy it that very day.

Maynard immediately signed an agreement that contained an “as-is” clause and drove off in the car. Two days later, the brakes failed while driving and Maynard crashed into a tree. The front of the car was damaged and Maynard sustained mild injuries. Infuriated, Maynard immediately towed the vehicle back to Pierre’s and confronted him. Pierre shrugged it off, saying, “Too bad, bad brakes or not, you agreed to the “as-is” clause in the contract!”

Now Maynard does not know what to do. He has lost two weeks of work pay due to the injury, a damaged car that cost him $4,000, and physical pain and mental trauma. To make things worse, Maynard discovered the car’s fair market value was actually only $1,500 at the time of the purchase.

Research contract concepts related to formation and defenses to enforcement using online library resources, and the Internet. Based on the facts of the case and your research, respond to the following questions:

  • Was a valid contract formed between Pierre’s and Maynard? Explain.
  • If a valid contract was formed, does Maynard have any arguments to have his money refunded?
  • What are Maynard’s rights under the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) with respect to the “as-is” agreement he signed?
  • What damages, if any, can Maynard sue Pierre’s for?
  • Discuss any ethical issues concerning Pierre’s behavior.
