Case Study 2: The Johnson Family

You are a first grade teacher at an elementry school. You are especially worried about one of the students in your class, Micheal Johnson. He always seems to arrive at the school extra early ( usually about 30 min.) He is never dressws appropriately for the weather, and his general appearance is sloppy. His school work is on gradelevel. However, at times his behavior is aggresive snd hostile ( especially toward classmates). On several occasions you have noticed bruises on him, and when you ask him about these, he is evasive. During your first parent-teAcher conference, youshare your concerns with the mother. She breaks down and tells you that her husband, Micheal’s stepfather is very hard on him. He is sarcastic, always belitting him, and at times gets physically violent with him. The mother ask for helps.

What is your role as a teacher? What assistance is available to Micheal and to his family in your community?

  • The title of the case study and a summary of the problem/concerns
  • Your response to the question(s) posed at the end of the case study, including what community services you would recommend (In examples that ask you to respond as a teacher, respond as a professional working with children and families.)
  • Two general suggestions to foster communication, clearheadedness, and the development of a collaborative plan of action

Philosophy Discussion

Your answers to each of these questions should be at least one paragraph (6-7 sentences) long, and it should show some thoughtful consideration regarding the matters raised in the questions.  Your total set of answers to these questions needs to be at least 200 words.  Also, when you reply to these questions, be sure to insert the letter for each question next to your answer corresponding to that question.

You will also need to reply to at least two students.  When you reply to another student, you do not need to reply to that student’s answers to every single question for this week.  You can just pick their reply to one question and reply to their answer to that question.  Your replies to other students should be at least 100 words long each.

A. Clifford says this at one point:

And no one man’s belief is in any case a private matter which concerns himself alone. Our lives our guided by that general conception of the course of things which has been created by society for social purposes. Our words, our phrases, our forms and processes and modes of thought, are common property, fashioned and perfected from age to age; an heirloom which every succeeding generation inherits as a precious deposit and a sacred trust to be handled on to the next one, not unchanged but enlarged and purified, with some clear marks of its proper handiwork. Into this, for good or ill, is woven every belief of every man who has speech of his fellows. A awful privilege, and an awful responsibility, that we should help to create the world in which posterity will live (500).

Explain what Clifford is saying here in your own words, and explain how this supports Clifford’s view that we need evidence for all of our beliefs.

B. Clifford thinks that we need evidence for all of our beliefs in order to be rational.  One of the main ways that he reaches this conclusion is by reflecting on one example involving a ship owner and the lessons that we can learn from it.  What do you think about this argument?  Do you think that Clifford has argued convincingly for the conclusion that we need evidence for all of our beliefs in order to be rational?  Why or why not?

C. Often in the course of discussing Clifford, philosophers discuss the following example.  Suppose that someone is diagnosed with cancer and told he or she only has three weeks left to live.  However, suppose that this person refuses to believe she will die in three weeks even though the doctors tell him or her that this is what the evidence indicates.  Suppose that, in the face of the evidence, the person believes that she will live longer than three weeks, and suppose that as a result of this belief this person in fact ends up living longer than three weeks.  This sort of thing happens in the real world.  Do you think that this person is rational or irrational in what he or she believes about living longer than three weeks, and do you think that this example shows that Clifford is wrong that we must have evidence for all of our beliefs to be rational?

D. Often in discussing Clifford, people reply by saying, “As long as your beliefs aren’t hurting anyone, it is rational to believe whatever you want even if those beliefs have no evidence.”  Do you agree with this?  Why or why not?

outline

Before beginning this assignment, review the Document icon Final Paper instructions. You will see that you will be writing a letter of advice for a couple or group of co-workers, using the first five-course learning objectives of this course. This assignment is designed to get you to create a plan for doing that final assignment that will be due in Week Five.

The course learning objectives you will need to cover are:

  • Explain the principles of and barriers to effective interpersonal communications.
  • Analyze the role of communication in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.
  • Differentiate appropriate levels of self-disclosure and emotional intelligence in various relationships.
  • Describe strategies for using communication techniques to resolve interpersonal conflicts.
  • Analyze the impact of gender and culture on interpersonal communications.

This week, you will write an outline for your Final Paper. You must use the Save icon Outline Template as the basis of your outline.

The outline must contain

  • An introduction with thesis statement.
  • All learning objectives, with details about how you plan to address each. Please be sure to explain how you plan to support all of your key claims with evidence. Here, you do not have to write full body paragraphs, but you must give your instructor a sense of how you plan to cover each objective with course materials, independent academic research, and personal experiences that correlate with those key points.
  • A conclusion. The conclusion should restate the overall perspective offered in the paper, with a restatement of the thesis and the central points outlined in the paper.
  • A reference page containing at least three academic resources. You should find at least two of these resources independently .

Remember, you will need to cite your sources in order to get credit for the use of course and academic materials, which is part of how you will be assessed

PHYLLIS YOUNG

Paper: will submit a 4-5 page paper that answers and responds to the questions given on the movie Breakfast Club. The paper will be submitted to Turnitin.com. You will be graded on the content of your answer, the reasoning/argument you make between the theory and the facts of the case study as well as writing (grammar and punctuation). You will need to watch the movie and provide your own analysis (You may be able to get the movie at such places like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, Red Box, etc.)

Description of Movie

The Breakfast Club takes place at an Illinois high school, where five dissimilar students are sentenced to spend a Saturday detention session together. In attendance is a “princess” (Ringwald), an “athlete” (Estevez), a brain” (Hall), a “criminal” (Nelson), and a “basket case” (Sheedy). These titles identify the roles the student play during the school week. Because of stereotypes and status levels associated with each role, the students want nothing to do with each other at the outset of the session. However, when confronted by the authoritarian detention teacher (Gleason) and by eight hours of time to kill, the students begin to interact. Through self-disclosure they learn that they are more similar than different. Each wrestles with self-acceptance; each longs for parental approval; each fights against peer pressure. They break through the role barriers and gain greater understanding and acceptance of each other and of themselves. They

ultimately develop a group identity and dub themselves, “The Breakfast Club.”

Some Points to Address in Paper:

1. In the film 5 people come together to be apart of a group detention session. Discuss the group’s developmental stages as stated in Chapter Two of the text. Be sure to address

each developmental stage and refer to the scene in the movie that that the stage began and

then moved to the next.

  1. What factors contribute to the group’s cohesiveness? Be sure to refer to Chapter 8 of your

text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  2. To what extent did members effectively understand, remember, interpret, evaluate, and

respond to one another’s statements and questions? Be sure to refer to Chapter 7 of your

text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  3. What group roles and related listening skills could group members have used to resolve

the problem at hand and to come together as a group? Be sure to refer to Chapter 7 of

your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  4. How did the diversity of the 5 students hinder their ability to come together as a group?

Be sure to refer to Chapter 4 of your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

  5. Talk about each of the roles the 5 students play in the movie, then address how these

roles affected their attitudes and behavior as a member of the group detention session. Be sure to refer to Chapter 3 of your text and use specific scenes from the movie.

Discussion 5 Philosophy

A. Start off by summarizing Pascal’s Wager in your own words.  One objection to Pascal’s Wager is that this does not seem to produce sincere belief in God.  The idea here is that if you just believe in God to hedge your bets and to avoid going to Hell, then this is not sincere belief.  Do you agree with this objection?  Why or why not?

B. One objection to Pascal’s Wager involves many-gods.  The idea here is that just like you could argue you should believe in the Christian God to hedge your bets, so, too, you could argue that you should believe in ancient gods such as Zeus or Thor to hedge your bets as well.  What do you think of this objection, and do you think it shows that Pascal’s Wager is not plausible for people today?

C. One of the things that we talked about this week is the idea that religious belief is a “momentous option.”  The corresponding slide this week in the module says on this point:

We should not postpone deciding whether or not to believe that God exists. Nor is this a decision that should be made lightly. Whether one chooses to believe that God exists is a matter of extreme existential importance, as how we answer this question is likely to greatly affect how we choose to spend time, how we make other important life decisions, how we raise our children, and so on.

Do you agree with this?  Why or why not?

D. One thing that you have done this week is examine the idea of the sensus divinitatis in Reformed Epistemology.  Explain the sensus divinitatis, and why advocates of Reformed Epistemology think that this makes it plausible to believe in God without evidence or proof.  End by stating if you agree or disagree with the Reformed Epistemologist.  Why or why not?

Information technology project management

Describe and present real-world examples of the three (3) types of cost estimates and where you would find them in the context of the PMBOK process groups.

Describe how you can build quality into your project in each of the PMBOK process groups.

Describe the team-building activities you would use as a project manager throughout the PMBOK process groups. Is there any one that you would recommend over the others? Why?

Describe the activities you could use if the project starts to run late, over budget, and invokes some scope creep.

Communication among various constituents in terms of time and place is key to project management consideration. Describe the types of communication tools that you could use to effectively manage your project communication in a large multinational project. Which of these tools have you used successfully or seen implemented successfully? Share the experience thoroughly.

Working with cross-functional teams and offshore teams is common in large IT project deployments. Similarly, your stakeholders may be from different parts of the business. Describe how you would communicate and connect with individuals that come from different parts of the organization or from outside partners.

Describe some of the tools and techniques that you can use as a project manager to mitigate risk in your projects. Support your response.

Question:  Define risk at the outset of your large hypothetical multinational and multi-constituent project. Discuss how you can use your risk breakdown structure to identify good and bad project risk.

Using your Web research for an IT-specific RFP or RFQ, review your document and defend whether it adheres to the basic outline or template included in Figure 12-4 of the text.

Recommend at least one (1) improvement your research document can make.

Question: Select one (1) type of a cost-reimbursable contract. Describe how it works and cite an example of its application in a real-world project.

Week 5 Content Review

Directions:

  • Respond to each item. Each response should be concise and between 23 paragraphs in length.

  • Use MS Word to write your responses, and submit your answers to all three questions in one Word document.

  • Copy and paste each question within the document, so that your instructor can see which question you are responding to.
  1. Lilian G. Katz has been credited with a number of contributions to the field of early childhood education. One of her contributions, the Project Approach, has been known to foster children’s development and learning as early as toddlerhood ,and can also be used just as successfully with children in the upper elementary grades. Summarize the main elements of the Project Approach, and identify at least two ways that it exemplifies meaningful learning for children of any age.

  2. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences first included seven different kinds of intelligence; he currently includes nine. Reflect on what you have learned about this theory, and consider the differences between the traditional theory of intelligence and the theory of multiple intelligences as summarized in this week’s Learning Resources. Then, explain how children in an educational setting might benefit from a teacher who understands and believes in Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences.

  3. Reflect on what you have learned this week about emotional intelligence and social/emotional learning. Consider the “four branches” of emotional intelligenceaccurately perceiving emotions in oneself and others, using emotions to facilitate thinking, understanding emotional meanings, and managing emotions (as defined by researchers John Mayer and Peter Salovey). Then, explain why emotional intelligence is a vital attribute in both teaching and learning situations.

Mendel Paper

Case: Mendel Paper Company
Mendel Paper Company produces four basic paper product lines at one of its plants: com¬puter paper, napkins, place mats, and poster board. Materials and operations vary accord¬ing to the line of product. The market has been relatively good. The demand for napkins and place mats has increased with more people eating out, and the demand for the other lines has been growing steadily.
The plant superintendent, Marlene Herbert, while pleased with the prospects for increased sales, is concerned about costs:

“We hear talk about a paperless office, but I haven’t seen it yet. The computers, if anything, have increased the market for paper. Our big problem now is the high fixed cost of production. As we have automated our operation, we have experienced increases in fixed overhead and even variable overhead. And, we will have to add more equipment since it appears that we need even more plant capacity. We are operating over our normal capacity as it is.
“The place mat market concerns me. We may have to discontinue printing the mats. Our specialty printing is driving up the variable overhead to the point where we may not find it profitable to continue with that line at all.”
Cost and price data for the next fiscal quarter are as follows:
Computer paper Napkins Place mats Poster board
Estimated sales volume in units 30,000 120,000 45,000 80,000
Selling prices……………. $14.00 $7.00 $12.00 $8.50
Materials costs………… 6.00 4.50 3.60 2.50

Case: Mendel Paper Company (continued)
Data with respect to production per machine hour and the variable cost per hour of pro¬ducing each of the products are given as follows:
