Answer the following questions related to Case Number 4-F Where Everybody Knows Your Name in the Discussion(pg 81)

1. Did Luce have a responsibility to tell her editors about her relationship with Schenk? If so, when should she have informed them?

2. What aspects of their lives should journalists or other media professionals be able to keep private? How much power should the organization they work for have over how these employees conduct themselves?

************************ Student Response #1 ***************************

No, Luce did not have to tell her editors about her relationship with Schenk. There is no need. Luce states in page 125 that she didn’t see their relationship having an interference with her job.

Journalists and other media professionals are just like us, normal people. The only difference is that more people might possibly know their name because of their occupation being in the media. If they would like to keep their private lives to themselves, they are allowed to do that. It is hard to explain exactly in words, but I believe that the organizations they work for shouldn’t have a say 100% but they should hold their employees to a professional extent. They should be respectful of their work place and employer and be responsible and respectful. What the employees do behind closed doors in their personal lives is their business and the organizations shouldn’t have a say but in public they should hold a certain amount of power.

************************ Student Response #2 ***************************

1.Luce did not have to tell anyone about her relationship with Schenk because it is no one’s business. The only reason it was ever a problem was because of their jobs. They related in fields and it just seemed to colleagues it wouldn’t work out but they made it work even when no one knew. She did the right thing by keeping it on the low so no one would be surprised about the relationship but the best aspect about the situation is they kept it very professional. 2. Every aspect of a journalists life should be kept private cause work life and private life are two separate things. Although, Luce and Schenk beat all odds by being together it was like 2 magnets attracting and they took the risk by being together and they didn’t care what anyone said. As long as people come to work and do their job they shouldn’t have that much power over them unless they are doing something wrong.

************************ Student Response #3 ***************************

No, I do not feel as if Luce had to tell her editors about her relationship with Schenk. If I was in her position I would have done the same thing in all honesty. People’s personal lives are private so whatever goes on outside of work as long as it does not interfere with the workplace is that person’s business so Luce and Schenk in this case. Although their jobs related in a way it was also kept private for personal reasons. Organizations that people work for only should have power of what goes on in the workplace. Whatever task that have to do with work is the only power organizations should have over their employees. Luce and Schenk came to work, did their job and kept their private life private and that is exactly how it should be.

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/09/190903101503.htm According to a recent study done at University of Cambridge, a mother unhappy with her spouse will talk more to her infant son over daughter. The study observed 93 couples who are first time parents by placing a monitor on the infant. The monitor did not record the conversations but simply registered any time an adult talked to the child. Overall, the study showed mothers talk more to their children versus their fathers, even when the father is more involved in parenting. Out of the 93 couples that were studied, those that reported unsatisfying spousal relationships with sons used 35% more words when communicating with baby. The reason as to why is still unclear though. Researchers believe it may be the mothers way of bonding with and compensating for what the spousal relationship lacks with the child of the same sex.

************************ Student Response #2 ***************************

It seems as though when talking about the Nature vs Nurture debate, serial killers are always a topic of discussion. This is attributed to the fact murder is one of the most heinous acts a human being can commit in modern day society. Especially when it is carried out so easily and habitually from people such as the likes of Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer and John Gacy. But what is it that makes them tick differently? On the nature side, there was a discovery within recent years showing that a gene labeled as MAO-A in the X chromosome is linked to aggression and violence in serial killers. This is an important find because it explains why the majority of serial killers are male. When there is a defect in this chromosome it makes a person more aggressive and impulsive, which in turn, makes them more like to carry out an act such as murder. However, in females there are two X chromosomes, it is believed when a female has this defect in one MAO-A gene the other cancels out this defective one. On the nurture side, there are also obvious tragic events that can contribute to one acting out in this way. Many killers were tormented sexually, mentally and physically. It seems as though both of course have a huge impact on a child’s state of mind and development. However, it has to be a “perfect storm” of these events to result one being behind such atrocities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs7_ChnFt7o

************************ Student Response #3 ***************************

I was astonished at how many ways chromosomes can be wrong when babies are born. I was even more shocked that some of them go undetected. I thought the XYY gene would automatically make a male bad or a serial killer. This article explained chromosomal defects such as the trisomies (triple chromosomes), Turner Syndrome, and Triple X Syndrome. Usually there are 23 chromosomes. With just a little difference, so much can change the development of a person. Down Syndrome is actually Trisomy 21 and this causes physical and mental developmental delays and issues. Women 35 and over that are pregnant are offered a test to see if their baby has the syndrome so that they can make a decision as to what to do about keeping the baby. My mother had me when she was 35 and she refused the test. It is a dangerous test to the baby, risking the pregnancy. The other two trisomies are more of a problem. The other syndromes are equally as interesting to read about. https://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/Article?contentid=468&language=English

Music Analysis Exercise.

Music Analysis Exercise.

Listen to the music posted on the attached files. For each category find and describe the following: 1) a common practice in the songs 2) Your sense of the range of diversity of music, lyrics, etc in that category.

Music analysis example

Music pre-1960: During this time there were multiple instruments being used per song as well as similar types of patterns in how the song was sung. The song sounds raw with instrumental errors.

Music – 1960: The music sounds more edited and messed around with, it sounds less pure compared with to the pre-60’s music. It still has real instruments playing in the song but they have less instruments playing, usually a guitar and or piano. The background singers were more pronounced in the song.

Music – 1970: In the music of this decade changed from, the music in the 60’s. The quality of the music is better but the originality of it is not there as much. It sounds good, the instruments are still something that is dissipating, more of the computer sound is being heard in the song.

Music – 1980: The music sounds more futuristic, more of the electric guitar and our of this world sounds. Another instrument used is the drums which add different sounds and variation on beats and of course a lyrical rhythm.

Music – 1990’s- 2000: In this case of music, the lyric part of its is more repeated and most of the song is the same words. Compared to the music of the 60’s up to 70’s the lyrics were not repeated as much and they had more of a story to tell. This decades music is still telling a story but with lyrics that repeat making them more catchy and easy to remember. The music starts to be more upbeat and fast moving.

Music – 2000 – Today: This music has different sounds and beats that make up the song, with fewer lyrics, the lyrics it does have repeat throughout the song. It also uses a lot of computer made sounds and instrument sounds made on a computer . It is more modern making fit for the newer generation. This music continues to be more upbeat, fast making the songs more of a party song.

1. I think the value of local autonomy for journalists and producers comes from the fact that local news stories would essentially be “easier” to investigate and report on. If there was local autonomy, journalists and producers could feel more confident in fulfilling their duty to providing a public service by reporting local news stories truthfully because they could work hand-in-hand to report the facts to the public. In addition to that, I feel it would add to network and journalist credibility because journalists may feel even more motivated to thoroughly investigate the truth behind local stories and confer with credible sources, and it also allows the public an option to view multiple news networks but trust they are getting the same, true story. I think local autonomy in this way has the potential to build public trust and faith in their reporting which would ultimately ensure journalists and producers remain in business. I also think there can be value in local autonomy when something is deemed vital for the public to know by local constituents, and the story actually gets reported and not ignored. As far as seeing a difference in mergers that involve journalism and mergers that are largely about entertainment, I do not see much. I understand the argument made by Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin when he essentially states that having ownership of too many networks could “threaten diversity and localism in broadcasting,… and harm competition,” and that is the same argument that can be and is made about mergers such as AT&T/Time Warner and Disney/ Fox. Essentially it is argued that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing and both types of mergers having ownership of too much can have bad consequences, so ultimately I do not think there is much of a difference between the two.

2.A journalists job is to put out information in news that everyday people benefit, learn, and understand from. If the information they put out isn’t helping citizens, factual, and can be trusted; it is useless and damaging. They have a high value of making sure their facts and stories are correct without causing damage to themselves and us as citizens.

I do not see a difference between the Sinclair merger with Tribune or AT& T and Time Warner or Disney and Fox.

3.There’s not a difference between the Sinclair merger with Tribune and Disney/FOX and AT& T/ Time Warner. They all own a majority of the media, such as newspapers and broadcast. The value of local autonomy for journalist and producers are serving the public. Most journalist and producers are worried about protecting their “brand” than giving the readers what they need. Most consumers don’t trust these corporations because they are just looking to make money than to be credible. For example, critics argue that Sinclair uses its television stations to promote right wing propaganda. Sinclair also required their anchors and reporters to read positive messages supporting president Bush’s campaign against terrorism after 9/11. Sinclair owned more than 200 stations and reached up to 72 percent of households, which just like Disney, for example, also owns a lot of stations on television, such as the history channel, ESPN and a lot more.
