PAGE 233  Writing for College, Writing for Life’ (2011, 2nd edition)

Our Own Warrior Princess Jennifer showed me her scar Friday. It’s the most 1 beautiful scar I’ve ever seen. A huge stapled gash on her stomach, shaped like the Mercedes logo. A red badge of courage. Jennifer is my niece, a 33-year- old lawyer. On Wednesday, she had half her liver taken out at Georgetown University Hospital to save the life of her uncle (my brother Michael), who had gotten hepatitis years ago from a tainted blood transfusion. The complicated and risky operation for the 2 two, side by side, went from 7:30 am. until after 10 pm. Then, when a Medivac helicopter arrived with a matching liver for another patient, the same team of doctors had to start on another emergency six-hour liver transplant. The night nurse told Jennifer she was an oddity. 3 “We don’t see many live donors,” she said. “Not many people are that generous.” Or brave. Jennifer’s morphine drip wasn’t at- 4 tached properly the first night after the operation, and no one knew it. She felt pain, but didn’t want to be a wimp by complaining too loudly. Instead, she was Reaganesque, cracking jokes and wondering where the cute doctors were. She survived the first night after this excruciat- 5 ing operation au naturel, like Xena the Warrior Prin- cess. If all goes well, her liver will grow whole again in several weeks, as will Michael’s half. Unlike her father, who charged people a nickel 6 to see his appendix scar when he was 10, she let me look for free. As we sat in her room, watching Ma- riah Carey singing with a bare midriff on the “Today” show, I worried a little how she would take the disfigurement. She’s a fitness fanatic, who works as a personal trainer in her spare 7 time. She’s single, out in the cruel dating world. And we live in an airbrush culture, where women erase lines with Botox, wrinkles with lasers, and fat with liposuction. I told Jen scars are sexy; consider that great love scene in “Lethal Weapon 3” when Mel Gibson and Rene Russo, as police officers, compare scars. Identify the claim/thesis statement of the author.

What are her reasons to support the claim?

Does she answer the opposition (the rebuttal argument, which is an essential component of persuasion)?

Discuss the three appeals – logical, emotional and ethical – in Dowd’s argument.

The purpose of this discussion thread is to familiarize you with patterns of argument, so don’t be scared by terminology. Go ahead and read the article, and share your thoughts on it. What is the main idea of the author and how well she is communicating it? What are you learning about persuasive writing, now that you’ve read 2 essays, SantiDeRosa’s and Maureen Dowd’s? Give an example of a parent conference to explain to the parents the need for a referral for additional diagnostic testing.

SAMPLE Parent-Teacher conference scenario:

Ms. Mattiuz (teacher): Hello Mr. and Mrs. Jones. Thank you for attending tonight’s conference. It is such a pleasure working with Jodi (student) each day.

First I would let parents know Jodi’s strengths. Next, I would “encourage parents to share their observations of their child’s learning at home” (Otto, 2014, p. 354).

Ms. Mattiuz: As I have gotten to know Jodi these past few months, I have some concerns I would like to share with you.

Mr. & Mrs. Jones (parents of Jodi): What are they?

Ms. Mattiuz: I am concerned with Jodi’s lack of attention in the classroom and ability to complete her work, which is causing her to fall behind.

At this point I would show work samples and list the modifications I have made to help Jodi complete her work (Otto, 2014). In addition, the parents would be advised what the norm is for their child’s age/developmental level. I would continue by letting the parents know I have consulted with the school counselor, school psychologist, and the teacher assistance team.

Ms. Mattiuz: Have you noticed any similar behaviors at home?

Mr. & Mrs. Jones: Yes, we have. What can we do to help her?

Ms. Mattiuz: We would like to “find out more information” in an effort to offer Jodi the “best possible learning environment” by referring her for further assessment (Otto, 2014, p. 354)

rewrite in your own words

rewrite this in your own words and be sure it is 150 words:

Dividing a polynomial by a binomial is really quite similar to using long division. It has the binomial, the polynomial, and the answer (sometimes a remainder). When you are dividing a polynomial when the divisor is missing a term, all you would have to do is put in a 0, as you would in long division. To check your work, you would follow the same steps as you would in long division. This means you would multiply the quotient and the divisor and then add the remainder if you have one. In both kinds of division, you will be multiplying and subtracting the results from the dividend. I would assume that scientists would use polynomial division or maybe even certain technicians of some sort. Math is used all over the world it is just people don’t really pay attention to it.

There are four elements of financial management. Financial Management is needed to create order and sufficiency within a company when it comes down to the accounting portion. The four recognized elements of financial management is planning, controlling, organizing and directing as well as decision making. Each element is different from each other but together it creates an efficient system used to manage. Planning is when the financial manager identifies the steps that must be taken to accomplish the organization’s objective. Thus the purpose is to identify objectives and then identify the steps required for accomplishing these objectives. The next one is controlling. Controlling is when the financial manager makes sure that each area of the organization is following the plans that have been established. One way to do this is to study current reports and compare them with reports from earlier periods. Organizing and directing is the next one. When organizing, the financial manager decides how to use the resources of the organization to most effectively carry out plans that have been established. When directing, the manager works on a day-to day basis to keep the results of the organizing running efficiently. Decision making is the last one. The financial manager makes choices among available alternatives. Even though all of the elements have there own role in management, one can not be done without the other.

In a letter addressed to his father, Wilbur Wright asserts; “In flying I have learned that carelessness and overconfidence are usually far more dangerous than deliberately accepted risks”, (September 1900). This dictates why the handy job needs agility.

Body

It is extremely prudent for one to understand what it takes to achieve a mechanic career in the aviation industry;-demonstrate the capacity to acquire and technical and diagnostic skills with ability to achieve accuracy in a hands-on job.

Precisely, aviation is an ambition that requires consistent willpower to get to the brim with a few requirements before being in the edge.

What to sacrifice;

·         Money

·         Time

Without experience, your skills will only remain in paper. “The awkward truth is that hard work precedes satisfactory earnings” says Kristoff, a news writer. . So, doesn’t focus on money instantly but rather build the skills and money will come naturally.

Conclusion

Having acquired skills and earned adequate experience. It’s time to roll on! Establish a network to help you get a job or start your own training firm if you have the resources. Don’t work alone; be a team player. Working as a mechanic is quite a demanding task, so bargain your way to working part-time rather than full-time. Actually, you will have achieved your goal.

Explanation on the visuals used.

Visual aids can powerfully help the effectiveness of a speech. Many speeches benefit from having objects, images, key quotes, or data presented in a clear and dramatic fashion. Visual aids vary in kind, but there are similar benefits and tips for dealing with any kind of supplementary evidence that is shown to an audience.  So I have chosen these pictures as a visual Aid, because it will be easier to speak about how to become an aircraft Mechanic.   Also, by the audience being able to have a visual or anybody if have dream to become an aircraft mechanic easy visualizes

Class, this week we are working on our final essay! Let’s help each other out. Here are the instructions.  Part 1 (Essay 3–Paragraphs) First (in your initial response), post at least two paragraphs of essay three. You may post any paragraphs you wish, but please tell us which paragraphs they are and also be sure to include your thesis statement at the top of your post if you are not sharing paragraph one. Please put your thesis in bold. Also include at least one citation and one Works Cited entry. Part 2 (Goodbye) Class, we have made it all the way from A to Z, from hello to goodbye! Feel free to add any final thoughts or comments here for your classmates and/or your instructor. Be kind, please. It has been a joy working with all of you. Good luck and goodbye! *** For your student replies, answer some or all of the checklist questions below (enough to reach the required word counts, please). Please do NOT copy and paste the questions into your post, but please do include the numbers, so we will know to which questions you are responding. Answer in complete sentences. An example is below.  4. I do not see a transition word in your topic sentence for paragraph two. Perhaps you could add “furthermore” at the beginning of the sentence.  Here are the questions.  Is the thesis statement one concise sentence (i.e., a statement, not a question)? Is it the last sentence of the introduction? Does it contain three clear parts? What are the three topics that will be discussed in this essay? Does the topic sentence of each paragraph coordinate with the thesis statement and in the correct order (i.e., the same order they are presented in the thesis statement)? Do the supporting details of each paragraph support that particular topic sentence? Are there any sentences that do not belong? Why do they not belong? Did the author use transitions? Which words are transitions and where are they used? Can you suggest any other transition words that would work well in this essay?  Did the author use third person only and avoid first and second person? See the Grammar Review if you need examples of each. Did the author use contractions (e.g., don’t, can’t, won’t)? If so, where do you see these words? You may suggest a revision, if you wish. Did the author write enough words per paragraph (at least 100)? Did the author write approximately 5-7 well developed sentences per paragraph? Do you see any misspelled words or other grammatical problems? Use your grammar review handout, a dictionary, or a previously recommended site.  Did the author use signal phrases and in-text citations within the essay? Example: Critic John Smith indicates that “quote from article” (page number).  Are the sources listed in alphabetical order and in MLA style on the Works Cited page?  Which APUS library search engines were used, and are they listed in italics? (Hint: Sources should be listed in alphabetical order according to the author’s last name. If the author is unknown, alphabetize by the first important word in the title.)  The grading rubric for this forum is attached below. This week’s initial post will not be submitted through Turnitin since your essay will be submitted through Turnitin under Assignments.

Module 03 Written Assignment – Responding to Intolerance

Module 03 Written Assignment – Responding to Intolerance

In the workplace, we may hear a statement, joke, or remark that is unkind or inappropriate. Often the speaker might appear to do so in a way that is not intended to offend, but comes from other experiences or lack of awareness as to how they may be received.

It is up to you as a manager to set the tone for how these comments are countered in order to create an inclusive environment.

Choose one of the statements below (clearly identify in your work which statement you chose).

  • “We don’t serve those people here.” (Reference to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender clients)
  • “He should go back to his own country.” (Reference to someone of a different race)
  • “She just slows us down.” (Reference to a disabled worker)
  • “Why doesn’t he retire already!” (Reference to an older employer)

In a 2 page paper, suggest some ways in which you would professionally respond if you heard the comment by your subordinate in the employee lounge. Include how you might approach the employee (immediately, privately etc.). Provide specific comments that you might use in your discussion and consider how the individual might defend their actions. What further conversation might this lead to?

Explain the ethical and legal (if any) implications if statements such as the one you chose would continue. What might be lost in your workplace if the statements are allowed?

Include at least one resource you could use to help your conversation. Identify whether there is a legal guideline to share with your employee.

Annotated Bibliography

(DUE in 6 Hours) 100% plagiarism free

In an annotated bibliography, you follow each of your reference citations with a brief (100 words or less) qualification of the author (including their relevance to the subject); intended audience; how the source compares/contrasts with your other sources; how this source furthers the discussion of the selected topic.

This week’s assignment will be included in your rough draft (due in week 6).

Step 1:

For this exercise, find sources that are relevant to your researched argument paper. You must have five or more annotations in your bibliography. The sources must be scholarly sources. These types of sources (also identified as academic or peer-reviewed sources) are written by recognized experts in a particular field. These sources provide credible information for use in research papers.

Step 2:

Refer to the Writing Guide for information on scholarly sources. EBSCOhost is a source for scholarly sources. Under the “Limit To” heading on the search page, you can narrow your search:

Step 3:

Prepare your annotations as you read your sources. Use these questions as a guide for your notes:

  • Who is/are the author(s) and their relevance to the subject
  • Who is the intended audience; who is the author writing to (general public, researchers, academics, scientists?)
  • How this source relates or contrasts to at least one of our other sources
  • How this source helps to further your discussion of the topic

Step 4:

Checklist for Annotated Bibliography:

  • Does this bibliography meet the assignment criteria?
  • How does the formatting of this assignment look? Does it follow basic APA guidelines for a Reference page? (e.g. Times New Roman font, double-spaced, no extra spacing between paragraphs, first line of the citation flush left with all following lines indented, etc.?)
  • Are the annotations brief, clear, and informative? Do they avoid personal opinion? Do they act as a reference guide?
  • If you came upon this in your research, how useful would you find this bibliography to be?
  • Does this bibliography contain at least five citations

Project – Preparation

The first section of your course project, Interview and Evaluation of Current Policies, is due in Unit 5. In this unit’s first discussion, you will post a draft of your interview questions for peer review. Take some time to review the assignment description and Interview and Evaluation of Current Policies Scoring Guide (link given in the resources) to understand the requirements and grading criteria for this assignment. You may also review your course project information.
Note: Though it is recommended toconduct an in-person interview, you can conduct the interview by e-mail or telephone, if that is convenient to the interviewee.
Suggestions from the Professor:
I have a couple of recommendations for you. In u2d2 you indicated your topic would be on Gay employees. The draft interview question cover general diversity. The interview should be used to discuss policies directly related to your chosen employee group (Gay employees). I recommend you revise your questions in order to make best use of the interview in preparation for next assignment.
List of the Interview Questions I suggested. Now these questions need to be targeted to the Gay population. Please rephrase question to relate to Gay population.
  1. Is there a clear definition of diversity for your organization?
  2. Who handles the HR and diversity issues?
  3. Do the Bi-Laws states anything specifically about diversity?
  4. Are there any specific policy about joining?
  5. Are there any plans on expanding diversity?
  6. Are there sensitivity classes set in place?
  7. How do you combat issues on diversity and harassment?

NEED REPLY IN 15 HOURS or LESS

Think about your past experiences with writing (which may include the experiences you have had in this course). What advice about writing did you find most helpful? Why? Please explain the context that led to this advice. You may also tell more than one story about your writing experiences.
The objective of your discussion is to consider the advice of other writers and how we can always improve our writing by listening to others. Further, you are sharing that advice with your reader by reflecting upon the experience.

Remember, as always, that this writing should be a positive and constructive experience for everyone. The idea is that you reflect upon the process so that you understand it, understand yourself as a new student writer, and understand the challenges and successes you experience.

PLEASE REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS)

                                            CLASSMATE’S POST

I would say my past experiences in writing and how my writing skills have grown started very early in life. At the age of 16, I began by writing out the dictionary manually. This was before the internet was popular and accessible, and I wanted to improve my vocabulary which would in tun improve my writing abilities. This, however; did not address the methodology of writing, how to combine sentences coherently, how to tell a story effectively, etc. This training came much later in life, and in an odd format. As i made my way into corporate America, I began to utilize email as my primary form of communication, and I took several courses at my company that spoke to how to write emails effectively, which in a sense, spills over to every day writing as well. This is the only formal training n writing composition, other than college courses, that I have had, and I found this to be very effective.
