How do you define intellectual property, and in what ways and under what conditions are you willing to share it? Where do you stand, for example, on the issue of music file sharing? On downloading movies for free of charge? Do you think these forms of intellectual property should be protected under copyright law?

Fitness

The last 2 lessons were about lifestyle choices regarding drinking, smoking and sexual activity.  After reading through the material, were you surprised by how dramatic your health could improve if you quit smoking?  In regards to drinking, often times we don’t realize that we might have a problem until something serious happens.  Lab 13.1 could be an eye opener for many people who consider themselves “social drinkers.”  What steps, if any, will you take to  modify your behavior?

student #1

I don’t smoke or drink socially or recreationally. I don’t think it should come as a surprise to anyone at this point the harm that smoking can do to one’s health. I believe putting the label “social” before a habit or activity is just as unhealthy as the actual habit. It’s almost as if the habit is accepted more because of the label. If someone smokes and/or drinks, they smoke and/or drink. The frequency or audience doesn’t change that. Being aware of a habit is healthier than covering up the fact with a label. I feel like it can be managed better.

student #2

These do not really apply to me. I have never smoke, as just the smell of the smoke makes me cough.I try to limit my time around people that smoke as I do not enjoy smelling like smoke, breathing in the smoke, or just seeing the disgusting behavior.

I am not a drinker, I MAYBE have one drink a month. My friends hassle me because I’m one to never finish a beer when we go out. It’s just not appealing to me, and it’s too expensive.

———————————————

For this last discussion, I would like you to reflect upon the information you have learned in this course.  What information have you found most helpful?  Realizing that change takes time, where are you in your stages of change for some of your wellness goals?  Has the information in this class made you more aware of the consequences of your life choices?  If so, what changes have you made or do you hope to make?

student #1

I enjoyed all of the self assessments. They really made me aware of areas I need to improve in my overall health and fitness. It’s helpful to have a game plan. I’m a very visual person so having a written plan to reference is extremely beneficial. I’ve implemented some of the things I learned. I added yoga to my fitness routine to improve my range of motion. I’ve started wearing a watch to record steps and heart rate. I make smarter eating choices. I feel like I’m moving in the right direction. I’m realistic and don’t expect overnight success or changes to happen. However, I like knowing I’m taking the right steps to reach my end goal.

student #2

I took some time to reflect on all the information I have learned in this course, and it was a pleasure. Its hard to say what single piece of information was most helpful, as I feel there are so many important aspects of our health and they all add up to whom we are. Just because we are very diligent in one aspect does not guarantee our healthiness, we have to take in all the factors and try to improve on them all and limit the negative factors.

If it didn’t take time to change our health, we would all be a perfect weight and not sick, but that is not the case. Sometimes its easy to get “sick” but it can take much longer to get healthy. All I can do is to continue to take each day at a time, slowly working towards my goals, and not to get upset if I do not see results now, as I stay determined I will see results in the next month, six months, year etc.

I must take care of my body, well because its the only one I will ever have. And the healthier we are now, will hopefully lead to a healthier life in retirement and make life more enjoyable. I need to change my stress and anxiety levels and that will greatly improve my day to day health.

Thank you to all this semester

Authentic Assessment

According to Kostelnik et al. (2015), authentic assessment is characterized by the following:

  • A variety of data is collected across time
  • All developmental domains are of interest and are evaluated
  • It takes place in the natural learning context
  • It is conducted by a familiar person
  • It is functional and curriculum embedded
  • It is based on discovering children’s best performance
  • It is useful for planning classroom instruction

Select a learning outcome of any subject area from your state for Pre-Kindergarten or Kindergarten. List the content standard and describe an activity that facilitates learning this concept. Then, describe a form of authentic assessment that you will utilize to measure mastery of this outcome (see Chapter 7 in your textbook for different types of authentic assessment).

  1. Identify how this activity supports developmentally appropriate educational practices.
  2. Identify how the assessment activity supports developmentally appropriate educational practices.
  3. Identify how this activity will provide information about student mastery.
  4. Describe how you will scaffold the learning for students.
  5. Describe how you will utilize the information from the assessment to plan the next lesson/concept.

In determining how to effectively assess mastery of a concept, it is helpful to “begin with the end in mind.” First, list the outcome you want children to learn. Next, brainstorm ways in which children would demonstrate the learning outcome or observable behavior to you. Then, design an activity that results in the observable behavior you are looking for and list the different criteria you will use to identify which students obtained the outcome and which students didn’t. Select an authentic assessment strategy such as a structured observation, checklist, a mini-conference or portfolio. See Chapter 7 in your textbook for detailed information about a variety of authentic assessment strategies. Also, view the following website for examples of authentic assessment rubrics: Authentic Assessment Toolbox.

Active Reading

Active reading is a process or technique of actively engaging with the text we are reading. Often, we read passively—that is, we take in the information we read without questioning its validity and without making personal connections with the text. When we passively read, we do not gain as much from our reading as when we actively read.

Why Actively Read?

In “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” Nicholas Carr claims deep reading is tied to deep thinking. If this claim is true, then moving beyond surface level readings in a way that truly engages with the text can help us develop our abilities to think more clearly and more intelligently about a topic and about the world in which we live. Additionally, active reading, as opposed to the passive reading we do when skimming items or reading for pleasure, can help us

  • Save time because we pay more attention to what we read the first time and do not waste time rereading.
  • Prepare us for exams because we gain a more in-depth knowledge of the material.
  • Stay informed about a subject that interests us.
  • Develop exposure to new ideas or have familiar concepts reinforced.
  • Create a deeper understanding of life’s complexities.
  • Achieve intellectual growth.

Goals of Active Reading

When we read actively, we try to understand the text thoroughly by reading slowly and carefully, pausing to question a main idea or to reexamine a passage that confuses us, and interpreting the larger meanings and implications of the text we’re reading. We try to keep our minds actively thinking about what the text means. In general, active reading allows us to

  • Capture main ideas, key concepts, and details of reading.
  • Target, reduce, and distill the needed information from the text.
  • Engage with the text by making connections with our own knowledge and lives.
  • Ask questions that help us think deeper about the content.

Strategies for Active Reading

Many techniques can help us read more actively. Here are a few of the main ones:

  1. Start by previewing the text.
    1. Scan the title, subtitle, footnotes, pictures, and headings in the text. What do these tell you about the topic being discussed in the reading?
    2. Think about what you know about the topic. You already know a great deal about many topics. What preconceived notions might you bring to the reading?
    3. Look for information about the author. What does the author’s other works tell you about his or her stance?
    4. Think about the rhetorical situation. What is the author’s purpose? Who is the author’s intended audience?
  2. Read the text carefully and write ideas about the text in the margins, on your own paper, or on sticky notes placed in the text.
    1. Circle and look up the definitions to words you do not know or cultural references that you are not familiar with.
    2. Underline the thesis or main idea.
    3. Ask questions about the text. Questions may consider topics such as the author’s purpose or goal in writing, his or her use of evidence to support claims, or his or her use of language. Pause to think of questions you have about the topic at various points in the reading.
    4. Make connections between your own life experiences or knowledge and the text. Does the argument agree with your prior experiences? Have you read other texts with similar arguments? Do you think most people would agree with the evidence presented in the text? Has your own life confirmed or denied any of the arguments in the text?
    5. Find patterns within the text. Does the writer use repetition to get a point across?
    6. Identify assumptions the author makes in presenting the argument. Are the assumptions valid? Do the author’s assumptions challenge your own? In what ways?
    7. Interpret key passages to find the underlying meaning. Are there parts of the texts that can be interpreted in multiple ways? How do you interpret key passages? What does the text really mean?
  3. Reread the text.
    1. Review passages that are difficult. Now that you’ve read the text, can you more easily identify the meaning of difficult passages? What can you look up that might help you dissect the text’s meaning?
    2. Find shifts in points of view or in voice and identify any language that might cue you into the underlying meanings in the text.
    3. Paraphrase difficult passages by restating the passage in your own words.
    4. Create a summary of the text’s main argument in your own words.
    5. Try to describe the text to someone who has not read it.

MY EVALUATION

1.    I watched the video clip about donut hell is not only entertaining but has some life lessons which are advanced to the audience. The use of comic ideas makes it enjoyable to watch. Not only does the clip regard entertainment as its major theme but also it advances educational value to the audience. This is through disseminating essential information on some important aspects that are upheld in our society. Specifically, this clip draws the attention of the judicial system in the land and how powerful people disregard some of the values upheld by the lowly in the society. The audience gets both entertainment value as well as educational value of their societal values.

2.                        This is one of the longest running animated prime series of all time. It has received popularity across all aged. However, most important to comprehend is that the target audience is adult and mature people at early 40’s especially male. For the adults it can be highly noted that they appreciate the entertainment value they receive from the clip but for the grown up, the clips have positive message to the society which can be used to educate, warn or even guide in the right way of living. In regards to the clip, it has positive message to the adults on the impact of failing to follow instructions and going against stipulated rules. The punishment can be very severe such that no one should even dare to flaw instructions.

3.                     On watching the video, we comprehend the theme of the clip is moral choices have consequences. The guy who was very much addicted to eating donuts did not care the consequences that could befall on him even when he defied simple rules. At first, he was saved and he even thought that no one saw him while taking the donut. No warning was advanced but the consequences which befell on him were sufficient for him not to repeat. Life in hell was not a joke and the lesson le obtained was enough to guide him in his entire life.

 On essay

  •   As per the title of the essay, revealing the ugly cartoonish truth, Benlow implies the current state of the society. It is full of social evils and even though the truth can’t be expressed directly, the audience has to understand all these social flaws despite how the activities may be silently carried out, the truth remains that they are social evils. Simpsons sees the current society to have been greatly misled by leaders. I firmly concur with him because leadership of a nation determines the path the country will take. Elite leaders promote justice and unity while corrupt leaders promote evil society
  • In my hometown, it is more or less like Springfield because the society has nothing to be proud of. Corruption is on rise with academic institutions receiving no funds from federal government. The current government does not promote democracy, poor business practices and use of unethical production practices. The epitome of exaggeration is reached when Simpson claims that government is not of the people but mob of self-perpetuating boozers and womanizers.
  • Benlow symbolize the nature of leaders represented in the cartoons with paintings representing ill behaviors they perpetrate in the society. I concur with him because the current leadership has been flawed by greedy self-perpetrating leaders.

Rhetorical  Star

  • The subject matter of evaluation is poor leadership in the society. The topic is not engaging but very interesting as the audience is interested in understanding means leaders employ to corrupt the society.
  • The intended audience for the essay is the entire society. This is because for a change to be effected, all stakeholders in the society have to take part.
  • Benlows’s main purpose of writing this essay was to educate. He did achieve his purpose as through it social evils perpetrated by leaders are exposed hence society is aware of their current state of society.
  • The writer heavily employs use of descriptions in his work. The nature of leaders as self-perpetrators and womanizers. This clearly advances use of description.
  • The essay is very much effective and this is determined by the extent to which the desired information is well delivered to the audiences. His message was well received by audience hence very effective.

PEER RESPONSE

Kaleigh Craft
1-I have watched The Simpsons all of my life. I have always thought of it as purely entertaining until reading Revealing the Ugly Cartoonish Truth: The Simpsons. After reading this article, the show started making a lot more sense to me. I would have never thought that the show was really shedding a light on everyday American life. I chose to watch The Simpsons– “Donut Hell.” I had actually seen this episode before and never really thought anything about the underlying message until now. The video definitely reveals a lot about today’s society. In the clip it shows Homer making a deal with the devil and selling his soul for a donut. Homer tries to outsmart the devil by not finishing the whole donut at first and tells the devil that he is smarter. I feel like this tells a lot about our society in the sense that some people feel like they can outsmart the devil, and some people think that their actions will go unpunished. Homer eventually finishes the donut and is forced to spend the day in Hell until he has a fair trial the next day. While Homer is in Hell, he is forced to eat all of the donuts in the world. Homer eventually eats all of the donuts, and instead of crying out in pain from eating all of the donuts, he continues to ask for me. I feel like this scene is talking about America’s obesity problem, and how some Americans do not stop eating when they should. The audience for this show is for adults. I did watch the show growing up as a kid, but I did not understand all of the jokes and puns like I do now. The point of the video was to show how some people think that they can outsmart the devil, and how some people do not know when they should stop eating.
