You choose which bioethical issue to write about; in this Assignment, reflect deeply on a topic that matters to you. If you need help selecting a topic, consult with your instructor.

Complete your position paragraph. You should write about a bioethical issue that strikes you as interesting, important, and relevant. For example, if, when reading the assigned chapter in the text, you recalled a personal situation involving bioethics that you thought was unethical, you might write a position paragraph about how that situation relates to your reading. The point of the Assignment is for you to reflect deeply on one concept and its relevance to your own life. If you find it difficult to select a topic to write about or have any questions about how your paper should be organized, please consult your instructor.

You must apply at least one ethical theory to support your position and explain how a different theory compares when applied to this issue.

It is not enough to name a theory; you must explain the theory and demonstrate how your position reflects the logic and reasoning of that theory. You must also show how your position supported by ethical theory is stronger than another position supported by another theory.

Remember that theory is the “why” behind your beliefs.

Select a work of art of your choice from any of theinteractive museums provided in Week One, the CourseMate Bonus images, or from your local art museum. Contemplate the work of art and add your interpretation of the art, based on the characteristics of the corresponding movement, to your art journal (the Prezi started in Week One). Pay close attention to style, media (materials), methods, subjects and any other details that make this work significant, using appropriate art terminology. When analyzing art, you should look for the various elements to help determine its structure, meaning and value. The traditional seven elements are as follows:

Without conducting ANY additional research this week, we are going to explore what you initially see and think when you look at a work of art. This activity is meant to help you understand:

Utilize the formal vocabulary in describing works of art
Analyze how the subject and context of work can help with interpretation

Select three (3) works of the first half of 20th century American art from the list below.

For each work of art:

1. List the artist, date and title.
Write a paragraph that discusses the visual elements in the art work (For example, are the shapes geometric, or organic. What colors are used, etc.?). Using the resources above, describe how the elements work together. Note: You do not have to use every element in your description, but rather the two or three that seem to be the most prominent in the work.
Write a second paragraph that describes the subject matter of the art work. What do you the artist might have been trying to say with this art work? Remember to consider the time frame in which the artwork was made. *Remember that you should not conduct research on this art work – the grade is based on your ability to support how the subject matter or time frame helped you interpret the meaning.

Your essay should be no less than 250 words for each of the three works you are examining (for a combined total of no less than 750 words).

I suggest the Dallas Museum of Art, the Kimball Museum (in Fort Worth and my personal favorite), Meadows Museum at SMU, or the Art Centre in downtown Plano. Also, the galleries in Denison that feature art by professional artists will be fine. Other museums may be applicable, but check with me FIRST. Remember, this is not a science class, so science or natural history museums will not be accepted. It MUST be an art museum.

William Eggleston pioneered the use of color for serious fine art photography. Color is often used in his photographs to achieve emotionally unnerving effects. His groundbreaking use of color has had a profound effect on the work of several filmmakers, such as David Lynch, as well as having helped establish color as the default medium for serious photography in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
Color is now also the standard medium for documentary photography and photojournalism. The work of the Spanish photojournalist Héctor Mediavilla is a good example. His photo-essay The Congolese Sape makes striking use of color in an otherwise drab setting to celebrate humanity’s life-affirming resilience under the most challenging social conditions.

Consider the following questions regarding the use of color in Eggleston’s Memphis, c. 1969–70 and Mediavilla’s The Congolese Sape:

2. In the Discussion Forum Unit 1, write a three (3) paragraph minimum essay identifying which type of art (representational or abstract) is more appealing to you and why. In your opinion, what major quality constitutes Art? How important is context in appreciating and understanding an artwork?

Listen attentively to the experts in the videos and learn from their informed discussion on how to analyze and critique a work of art. Build your text on the points they bring up in their talk and share your own take on the subject. Feel free to agree or disagree with them and your classmates but base your case on valid points and arguments.

3. Then choose two art works from https://www.google.com/culturalinstitute/beta/. Click on the left menu bar.

4. Find an example of representational art and one abstract work.

5. List the a) name, b) artist, c) date and d) medium of the works. Please also copy and paste links to the art work (see tutorial on how to copy link).

6. Use these two works as examples in your essay to support your opinions and ideas about representation, abstraction and context in art.

7. Reply to at least two of your classmates. Your initial posting should be a minimum three (3) paragraphs in length, while your responses should be at least one (1) paragraph.

Students earn up to two (2) extra points toward their total grade of this class by submitting their own 3D scanning project by 11:59 pm, May 1, 2017 (no late work accepted). The scanned object could be an artwork (even a building, or part of it) of any form, material, period, size, and origin.

To earn the 2-point extra credit, the student has to

1) Take photographs of the object of your choice.

Ideally, you should take pictures from as many different angles as possible to capture the images of all surfaces of the object. The images should overlap a lot, and each should include the entire object (i.e. no zoom-ins). Also pay attention to:

a) Lighting. Never use flash. Avoid direct sunlight, but shoot where there is constant ambient light to illuminate all parts of the object.

b) The number of pictures you take. The more images, the more detailed the model; but a larger image group also means more time for the computer to process it.

2) Generate the digital model.

I use Autodesk ReMake for this purpose (Recap360 is another choice). You can download and install it for free if you register using your @pitt.edu account. After installation is complete, you simply upload the image group to the server and it will generate the model for you.

In most cases, the model will need some cropping and other modifications. You could learn the basics of how that can be done by watching the tutorials on the official website.

3) Publish your model on Sketchfab (or any 3D viewing platform of your choice).

Export your model as an .obj file and upload the zipped file (including the .obj, .mtl, and .jpg files) onto Sketchfab (a Pro account is free if you register using your @pitt.edu account). While you upload, make sure you provide a title and a brief description of the object; you could also make the model “downloadable” so that viewers would be able to download and print it.

You need to adjust the 3D settings before final publishing. Several things to be adjusted include background color/image, lighting, and orientation. Provide at least three annotations in order to earn the extra credit.

4) Email me the Sketchfab link to your model (a link will be generated automatically if you click on “share”).
