Lifespan Development

Assignment 2: LASA 1: Development Throughout the Lifespan

Erikson and Freud are two of the few theorists who have developed a lifespan approach to development. Freud’s approach to development was psychosexual while Erikson’s was psychosocial. Even though Freud’s theory is better known, Erikson’s theory remains a leading and very much applied model in personality and developmental psychology today.

When considering these two stage-oriented theories, you can directly compare the majority of their stages. These are matched in the following table:

Approximate Age

Freud’s Stages of Psychosexual Development

Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial development
Infancy (Birth to 1 year)

Oral stage

Trust versus mistrust
Early childhood (1–3 years)

Anal stage

Autonomy versus doubt
Preschool (3–6 years)

Phallic stage

Initiative versus guilt
School age (7–11 years)

Latent period

Industry versus inferiority
Adolescence (12–18 years)

Genital stage

Identity versus role confusion
Young adulthood (19–40 years)

Intimacy versus isolation
Middle adulthood (40–65 years)

Generativity versus stagnation
Older adulthood (65–death)

Integrity versus despair

When considering Erikson’s eight stages of development, the way a person moves through each stage directly affects their success in the next stage. Their personality is being built and shaped with each stage. At each stage, there is a turning point, called a crisis by Erikson, which a person must confront.

In this assignment, you will observe or interview two different people, each at a different stage of development. For a third observation, take a look at yourself and the stage that you are in (this stage must be different from your other two observations).

  • Record your three observations in a template. Include the following information:
    • Name
    • Age
    • Gender
    • Current developmental stage
    • Status within the stage (i.e., identity achievement or role confusion)
    • Events that have lead to this status

Download a Development Template from the Doc Sharing area to record your observations.

  • Summarize what you have learned about psychosocial development through these observations/interviews.
  • Summarize the trends you see in your observations/interviews regarding psychosocial development.
  • How does movement through Erikson’s stages influence personality development? Again, be specific.
  • How do Erikson’s stages of development compare to Freud’s stages? How are they similar? How are they different?
  • Between these two theories, which one do you feel best explains your own personality development? Justify your answers with specific examples.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Insert your chart at the end of your paper. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

Taking Action

In this course, you have been introduced to ethics, social problems, and social policy. This assignment will prompt action from you to help resolve a social issue. You must learn about a problem, find a piece of legislation addressing your concern, and act to help solve the problem.

Using the textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, do the following:

1. Identify the Problem

Select and research a social issue based on the course readings or personal interest.

Then, address the following:

  • Define and describe the social issue in detail using a variety of relevant outside sources.
  • Explain the social context of the social issue.
  • Identify and describe ethical concerns related to the social issue.
  • Determine what population is most impacted by the social issue.

2. Find the Legislation

Use credible government sources to find and learn about a piece of legislation related to your chosen social problem or issue.

Then, address the following:

  • Explain how the piece of current legislation relates to the social problem or issue. Make sure you provide a description of the piece of legislation.

3. Write an Advocacy Letter

In order to help resolve the social issue, you must take action. Identify your elected representative(s) and find their contact and e-mail addresses.

Write an advocacy letter regarding the piece of legislation and your support of or opposition to it.

The purpose of an advocacy letter is to support or oppose the legislation that affects a social issue of concern to you. This letter is a way for representatives to stay in touch with the constituents they represent. The letter consists of a brief introduction identifying and addressing the social issue of concern (through personal experience, if applicable), an identification of the piece of current legislation that addresses your chosen issue, and your request advocating your representative to support or oppose the legislation.

Be sure to address the following in your letter:

  • Identify the purpose of your letter.
  • Identify House bill (HR) or Senate bill (S) number of the legislation.
  • Briefly summarize the social problem or issue.
  • Explain the importance of the legislation as it relates to your issue.
  • Advocate for or against the legislation in a knowledgeable and respectable tone. This includes the following:
    • Evaluating the proposed impact of the legislation on target population
    • Proposing possible ways the legislation can influence the social problem or issue

Download and review samples of advocacy letters. Use either of the sample letters as a template for your own letter.

Write a 3–5-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.doc.

Neuroanatomy Project

 Neuroanatomy Project

Imagine that you are working in a neurology clinic. One of the neurologists tells you that as his or her practice is expanding, he or she is having difficulty meeting the education needs of his or her patients. Part of this problem is explaining the basic neuroanatomical structures to the patients in layperson’s language so that they understand their diagnoses and their underlying neurological impairments. The neurologist asks you to create a written guide for the patients, including both the CNS and the PNS. He or she describes what the basic neuroanatomical structures are, where they are located, how they interact, and what function they serve.

He or she asks you to name the structures by using the correct technical language but to use layperson’s language as much as possible elsewhere.

Your neuroanatomy guide should cover the following:

  • Basic neuroanatomical structures (including the CNS and the PNS, as well as the structural packaging that protects the brain from the environment)
  • Locations of these structures
  • Functions they serve (what functions damage to these areas may affect)
  • How they interact

Be sure to explain the information in layperson’s language and use graphics and pictures where helpful. Use APA format when citing material from scholarly sources such as your textbook and online notes. Include a cover page and a reference page listing the resources you used to create your guide.

Your response should be at least 2 pages long. Save the response as AU_PSY350_M1_A3_LastName_FirstInitial.doc. Submit your response to the M1 Assignment 3 Dropbox by Wednesday, June 10, 2015.

Discussion Question

Language and the Brain

Researchers are constantly discovering new information about the brain. The Web articles in this week’s Learning Resources provide reputable information on recent findings. Explore at least two of these resources, looking for information that will expand and deepen your understanding of language development as it relates to the brain.

As you read the information, note ideas that are of particular interest to you and consider thoughts and insights that you would like to share about language development and the brain. Think about how this information might help you and others in the field of child development to work more effectively with children, families, and/or educators of young children.

Post the following:

  •
  • Describe two or more ideas that you found of particular interest about language development as it relates to the brain (e.g., research findings about language acquisition, specific examples of how language is learned). Be sure to cite your source(s).
  •
  • Then, share your ideas about how this information might help you and others in the field of child development work more effectively with children, families, or educators of young children.

philosophy of modern European culture

Essay Topics

1. Map out and critique the evolution of Greek thought from Plato through the Late Middle Ages. Comment on and provide a critical analysis of the impact of Greek philosophy and science on both early modern science and the Medieval Church.

2. Analyze in broad terms the similarities and differences between the modern and the post-modern worldviews. Be certain to include specific examples of the similarities and differences.

3. Discuss and comment on the SR and the impact that it had on (1) the Church and (2) the philosophy of modern European culture.

4. Analyze the argument that science and religion are “complementary.” Include an analysis of faith versus reason and why/how these two ideas came to be identified as two different “roads to reality.”

5. Explain in detail what Tarnas means by the “ self critique of the modern mind.” What is the role of the SR in this “critique?” Be specific.

6. How does the “ philosophical revolution” of the early 17th century inform and foster the SR? What is the role of both ancient and “ modern” astronomy in the development of the philosophical revolution? Be specific.

7. What is the “ crisis of modern science?” How and why did “religion and metaphysics [continue] their long and slow decline?” What is the role of Romanticism in the crisis of modern science?

In general, be certain to quote numerous specific passages in your essay to support whatever analysis or argument you are making. Since you need only refer to the Tarnas, you may simply place a page number in parentheses after the quote.

For this assignment, you will outline at least one of the arguments that you believe are made in the video you selected. In your outline:

  • Identify the issue that is addressed and the conclusion that is presented.
  • Identify the premises that are given in support of that conclusion.
  • Explain whether or not you think the argument is convincing by presenting your reasons for this position. If you do not have evidence for your position, you should consult scholarly materials that relate to the position you present.

Here is an example of an outline about an argument from the Monty Python Argument Clinicvideo. Utilize the same structure found in the example, but be sure to provide enough detail to satisfactorily complete all aspects of the prompt.

There is no minimum word count, but you must include a title page and reference page in APA style. The only required resource for this assignment is the multimedia source you chose to analyze. This should be the source that you primarily use to complete the assignment. Secondary sources are welcome but not necessary, and they should not be used in place of the argument piece you selected.

Argument Outline:

CONTEXT: After a brief bit of arguing about what an argument is, John Cleese rings the bell and declares that time is up. Michael Palin pays him for a second round of arguing, but Cleese pretends he didn’t receive the money. So they begin arguing about whether Palin paid. Palin gives a clear argument that can be summarized as follows:

THE ISSUE: Did Palin pay Cleese to argue or not?

THE CONCLUSION: Palin paid.

THE PREMISES (REASONS): Palin says, “If you’re arguing, then I must have paid.” He also assumes Cleese is arguing, though he doesn’t come right out and say this.

So the argument has this structure:

1. If Cleese is arguing then Palin must have paid.

2. Cleese is arguing.

3. Therefore Palin must have paid.

EVALUATION: This initially looks like a good argument, because Cleese has already said he’s “not allowed” to argue unless Palin pays. But this is not really a good argument. As Cleese points out later, “I could be arguing in my spare time.” In other words, the first premise is false. It is not necessarily true that “If Cleese is arguing, then Palin must have paid.”
