psychology

You have probably noticed in your educational career that some people are very good at remembering facts and therefore do well at tests that require memorization. Other students, on the other hand, struggle with tests that require memorization.  To understand how memory works, this exercise will ask you to trace the memory system – from the stimuli to long-term memory.

Use your text book and research from the Internet to learn the process of memory – from beginning to end. Your description should include the following:

  • Identification and description of each step in the human memory model. As you describe these steps, use an example to illustrate the process
  • Discussion of factors that enhance or impede information flow in each step of the process
  • Explanation of proactive and retroactive interference and how you might counteract their effects while studying in order to facilitate maximum retention via long-term memory
  • Explanation of other kinds of forgetting and a discussion of strategies that can improve memory consolidation and retrieval

Submit this in the form of a 2 -3 page paper. You can use illustrations to demonstrate the process.    Be sure to document your references using the APA format.

  • Margins – set to one inch
  • Font – 12pt. Times New Roman, no bold, or underline
  • Title – center above the paper, 12 pt. font (Level A Heading), no boldunderline, or italics
  • Pagination – every page; consists of a header containing a short title for the paper and page number placed in the upper right corner of the page
  • Line Spacing – double space all work including the References Page
  • Point-of-View – third person, objective; limit perspective to research; no personal opinion or narrative
  • In-text citations – must conform to APA requirements
  • References list – must conform to APA requirements

discuss the errors in the conclusions the authors have drawn from their statistical tests.

  1. Topic: Introduction to Hypothesis Testing

In an article entitled “Science and ethics in conducting, analyzing, and reporting psychological research” in the journal Psychological Science (1994), psychologist Robert Rosenthal examines the relationship between a researcher’s methods and the ethical implications of these methods. In particular, he examines what he terms “causism,” defined as “the tendency to imply a causal relationship where none has been established (i.e., where the data do not support it)” (p.128). He goes on to state that causism can arise from the language chosen to describe the results of hypothesis tests, especially when authors use words such as “consequence” or “cause” instead of “related to” or “inferred from.” He argues that the stronger language can be misleading, causing the result to “appear more important or fundamental than it really is” (p. 128). This, in turn, misleads the public into drawing conclusions or implementing policies that could be based on faulty assumptions. With this in mind, read the following excerpt from the Discussion section of a hypothetical research study by Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe linking prenatal vitamins with a certain birth defect called Birth Defect X, and answer the questions that follow.

“As shown in the previous section, our results were significant at the .05 level (p = .047, n = 23). These highly significant results prove the research hypothesis that there is a higher incidence of Birth Defect X in babies of mothers who consume prenatal vitamins daily versus babies whose mothers do not consume such vitamins. Thus, we can state with some certainty that taking daily doses of prenatal vitamins during pregnancy can cause the birth defect in question in many cases. This is a landmark study, the first of its kind that examines the link between prenatal vitamins and the consequent appearance of Birth Defect X” (Dewey, Cheatum, & Howe 2000).

    1. discuss the errors in the conclusions the authors have drawn from their statistical tests.
    2. Imagine that these results are disseminated to the general public through publication and media coverage. Write about 1 possible harmful consequence these conclusions could have in the everyday world.

Read Psalm 15; this passage describes how God wants his followers to live. How do these verses apply to the obligation of Christian psychologists (and psychologists in general) to care for the public interest when wording and reporting their findings

Analyzing Basic Applied Research

There are very different views of what types of evidence are most credible in evaluating the effectiveness of psychological treatment research. In this discussion you will analyze basic applied psychological research as well as evaluate how researchers applied a research process in the development of specific components. To begin, read the following articles (which can be accessed through the ProQuest database in the Ashford University Library):

  • “Evidence-Based Practice in Psychology: Implications for Research and Research Training”

Evidence-based practice in psychology: Implications for research and research training

  • “Practice-Based Evidence: Back to the Future”

Practice-based evidence: Back to the future

  • “Psychological Treatments: Putting Evidence into Practice and Practice into Evidence”

Psychological treatments: Putting evidence into practice and practice into evidence

After reading the articles listed above, select two of them.  Analyze the basic applied research within each of your two selected articles by answering the following questions:

  • What is the main point-of-view in each article?
  • What are the primary assumptions each author makes?
  • Which author are you inclined to agree with?  Support your choice with scholarly reasoning and cite your evidence.

You are required to include one peer-reviewed source that was published within the last five years to support your perspective.  You may not use any of the sources that were assigned for this course.

AIU Aspects of Psychology 2206 DB 2

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Anatomy of the Required Discussion Board Assignment

Required Discussion Board posts are in 2 parts within 1 posting. In the first part of your post, define and discuss the topic in academic terms, using citations and referencing, just as you will for any formal academic paper. This is where you demonstrate that you know the concepts. The second part of the required assignment is for application of the concepts. This is where you demonstrate that you know how to use the concepts you have learned.

A. Questions for weekly discussions and conversations (not part of the required Discussion Board assignment)

These questions can serve as the starting point for your discussions during the week. They are “thought starters,” so that you can explore some ideas associated with the Discussion Board and unit topics. Answers are not required and should not be submitted with your required assignment. Answers are not graded.

  • Does society overmedicate its citizens?
  • How is diet connected with neurotransmitter production?

B. Required Discussion Board assignment

Based on your reading of the text and supporting materials, it is evident that neurotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating brain function involved with cognition, affect, and behavior.

Part One

  • Define neurotransmitters, and describe how they do their jobs.
  • Discuss neurotransmitter excitation and inhibition.

Part Two

Pick1 of the following topics on which to comment:

  • Give an example of, and discuss how neurotransmitters play a role in your psychological health. Use examples such as sleeping, eating, memory, thinking, or mood. Pick an example from 1 of these human functions. For example, “I don’t sleep well; it could be because of serotonin imbalance,” or “When I feel good, my dopamine is flowing.”
  • This company sells dietary supplements to boost neurotransmitter production. This page defines neurotransmitters. Why might it not be desirable to use this as a source for an academic paper on neurotransmitters?

In your own words, please post a response to the Discussion Board and comment on other postings. You will be graded on the quality of your postings. Be sure to cite all references in APA format.

Environmental factors

Assignment 1: Discussion—Environmental Factors

In this assignment, you will have a chance to discuss a topic that brings personality theory together with social psychology. Dealing with unhealthy groups like gangs or cults is an important issue in social psychology. However, you cannot fully address this issue if you do not first understand personality development and how one’s personality affects the choices that are made. Specifically, you will look at Skinner’s behavioral perspective on personality development and discuss how that theory can play a role in this issue of unhealthy groups.

Bob is an adolescent who grew up in a gang-infested part of a large city. His parents provided little supervision while he was growing up and left Bob mostly on his own. He developed friendships with several kids in his neighborhood who were involved in gangs, and eventually joined a gang himself. Now crime and gang activities are a way of life for Bob. These have become his way to identify with his peer group and to support himself.

It is relatively easy to see that Bob’s environment has played a large role in his current lifestyle. This coincides with Skinner’s concept of environment being the sole determinant of how personality develops. Skinner believed that if you change someone’s environment and the reinforcements in that environment, you can change their behavior.

Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research Skinner’s concept of the environment and answer the following questions:

  • If you were to create an environment for Bob to change his behavior from that of a gang member to a respectable and law-abiding citizen, what types of environmental changes and positive reinforcements would you suggest and why?
  • What are some interventions that are used in the field currently? Are there any evidence-based programs that use these environmental and reinforcement interventions?

Write your initial response in 2–3 paragraphs. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.

By Saturday, June 6, 2015, post your response to the appropriate Discussion Area. Through Wednesday, June 10, 2015, review and comment on at least two peers’ responses.

Global Warming: A Major Concern

World Health Organization (WHO). (n.d.). Climate change. Retrieved from http://www.who.int/topics/climate/en/

Based on your understanding of the topic, create a report in a Microsoft Word document answering the following questions:

  • Examine one weather condition over the past two years in the U.S. which drastically affected the population. How can the community better prepare their families for such severe conditions?
  • Do you agree with the statement that countries should be held accountable for their contribution to climate change? Why or why not?
  • List some of the issues that might occur as the world’s population increases? Factor in water, food, and hazardous waste into your comments. Suggest ideas to address or avoid these issues.

According to the CDC website, violence is attributed for approximately fifty thousand deaths each year and results in over 2.5 million injuries. Homicide and suicide are the second and third leading causes of death, respectively, among US population aged fifteen to thirty four years.

Hospital emergency departments treat an average of fifty five people for injuries every minute. The worst after effect of the sudden population explosion across the globe is the rise in violence.

  • How have violent injuries affected a community? What steps have communities taken to decrease overall violent crimes?
  • What steps can the federal or state governments take to help support communities affected from random or consistent violent acts?
  • What can parents do in their homes to help educate children about risks and preventative accidents to help keep them safe? What role should parents take to reduce family violence?
  • How can health promotion and wellness programs play a significant role to reduce individual or gang violence?
  • How can schools and work environments increase safety measures against violent individuals or gangs entering their establishments?
  • What roles should parents, neighbors, friends, health care personnel, and the community take when they observe someone who may exhibit unusual behavior or comments to help prevent potential violence? What agencies or resources are available to help communities cope and help their members seek help or assistance?

Assignment 3: Political Personalities

As we have seen this week when looking at both psychoanalytic and neo-psychoanalytic theory, much of our mental health and success in adulthood is related to the events and relationships of our childhood. Much like Freud, Alfred Adler believed that childhood events are pivotal for the adult. For Adler, his pivotal childhood events were the development of rickets which kept him from walking until the age of four and contracting a near-fatal case of pneumonia at age five. These events served to inculcate a lifelong ambition which centered around his becoming a physician in order to focus on the curing of deadly diseases.

According to Alfred Adler, all people have moments when they feel inferior. For many, such moments will lead them to strive to compensate for that weakness. When this happens, it leads to what he calls “superiority striving,” in which the person is motivated by his or her feelings of inferiority to overcome and strive for betterment, achievement, and perfection.

It is important to note that superiority striving is different from simply striving for power. Adler considered this an unhealthy desire because the sole goal is power. The way that someone strives to meet his or her goals from an Adlerian point of view is referred to as a style of life.

Adler is also known for his study of birth order and its impact on personality.
Research Adler’s theory using your textbook, the Internet, and the Argosy University online library resources. Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • Choose a social or political leader (current or past) to examine through an Adlerian framework of superiority striving and style of life.
    • Superiority Striving
      • What might be the motivation behind this leader’s career choice, according to Adler’s theory? What was this person’s perceived inferiority or weakness? How did this person obtain his or her high level of superiority striving? For example, Franklin Roosevelt’s bout with polio may have been responsible for some of his motivation.
    • Style of Life
      • What was his/her goal and unique style of life that could be used to achieve this goal? What steps did this person take to overcome their perceived inferiority?
      • Did this leader act out of social interest or for personal gain? What was the long-term outcome of his/her striving?
    • Birth Order
      • How would you apply Adler’s theory of birth order to this personality?

Format your paper so it is double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, and with normal one-inch margins. Include a title page with a running head, an abstract, and a reference page. Do this for all the papers for this course.

Write a 2–3-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document will be named SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.
