Topic 3: Major Dick Winters Documentary

Throughout the Dick Winters documentary, MAJ Winters’ subordinates held him in such high regard. It was easy to see, not only the impact MAJ Winters had on his subordinates, but the impact they had on him. Two key elements of leadership that were apparent were people and influence. Because he spent the time to truly get to know his men, he had influence. According to Lewis (as cited in Gray, 2012), “Being a strong leader meant being able to rely on others to help get the job done.  That included fellow soldiers who had vastly different strengths and weaknesses than his own.” I understood this to mean that he knew his men so well that he knew what each soldier was capable of and their limits. By knowing this, he knew which person was appropriate for a specific mission. With that, a case for leaders-follow could also be made. Returning back to the key element of people, it was as though he gained so much of their respect that they were willing to go to the ends of the earth for him. Additionally, the emotional link MAJ Winters had with his subordinates allowed him to be a transformational leader, in a way that inspired a sense of purpose with his troops (García-Morales, Jiménez-Barrionuevo, & Gutiérrez-Gutiérrez, 2012). As with influence, MAJ Winters was able to gain the commitment of his soldiers by leading from the front and not withdrawing himself from dangerous situations that he was asking his subordinates to put themselves in. This attitude undoubtedly garnered the support of the subordinates. To drive the point, MAJ Winters (as cited in Gray, 2012) stated, “By working with the men, they get to know you. If you do a good job, that’s how you say ‘follow me.’”

Topic 2: The Biggest Mistakes a Leader Can Make

According to Dr. Ellen Langer, professor at Harvard University, the biggest mistake a leader can make is being certain. Being certain makes the leader unable to adjust to change. In business things constantly change and its never predictable. According to Dr. Langer “….when you think you know, you don’t pay any attention.” I agree with Dr. Langer that uncertainty should be a key. If a leader is unable to adjust to change they will not make it far. Change is constant nothing ever stays the same. A leader should be able to adjust accordingly and be able to train the individuals underneath him/her to adjust as well to keep things in order. In some cases change is a very good thing.

Another mistake I agree with was made by Jonathan Doochin of the Leadership Institute at Harvard College. Doochin believes one of the biggest mistakes a leader can make is acting to fast and not thinking through issues. Doochin suggested that a leader should step back and rethink things. Instead of acting off instinct a leader should sit down with his/her management team to work out problems and seek advise. Being able to step back and handle issues will give you a clean slate to start on instead of just acting off just acting without thinking. I believe this mistake just doesn’t trouble leaders it also troubles employees under the leader. Employees watch how their leaders react to certain situations and if it is a negative reaction that same energy will spread throughout the organization.

Journal Assignment: Being Self-Aware of Cultural Competence

This week you were provided with a plethora of information about culture and what it means to be culturally competent. Using a Likert scale rating from 1 to 10, with 1 being extremely low and 10 being extremely high, indicate where you currently assess your levels of (a) cultural self-awareness, (b) knowledge, and (c) skills. You need to rate each of the 3 areas: a rating for self-awareness, a rating for knowledge and a rating for skills. Support each rating with a statement of why you selected the level you did.

Note: The Journal is a graded Assignment and should not contain information meant to be kept confidential. Responses should adhere to the same standards of quality as those expected for a Discussion or Application question.

These journals are personal reflections of your experiences. These are informally written, can be done in “first person”, can be just a few paragraphs, do not have to be supported with resources, but MUST help me to understand your experience doing the assignment as outlined, or indicate that you have generated some insights concerning the topic.  Please be candid, as this will allow my feedback to be both personally relevant and hopefully helpful.  However, please also remember that everything posted in Blackboard is public, so only share what you feel comfortable sharing. Welcome to the class where we try to ease your fears about having a baby come into your home in a short time.  Babies grow quickly and develop through their interactions with the people around them and their environment (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  Babies are alert from birth.  They take cues from care giver’s faces and body language.   Babies and toddlers watch all the time.  Their wheels are always turning and soaking up what they see/learn.  Mothers who hold their babies all the time, co-sleep and feel that you cannot show too much attention on babies may be from more collectivist cultures where the family is essential in all aspects of life.
What is some common advice that you hear about babies or parenting?  Perhaps don’t spoil crying babies, babies should sleep on their stomach.  Some of this information is accurate and other is not.  These ideas are perpetuated by cultural beliefs (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  If a culture has an emphasis on independence and self-regulation, parents might be less willing to soothe a crying infant immediately.  One thing to keep in mind is that babies cannot communicate with you any other way than cry, so don’t get angry when they are just trying to express their need for food, diapers, or love.  As they grow into toddlers, you will notice that they always explore their surroundings.  You will notice that at times they cry for no reason and seek your attention.  Through this action, children are beginning to develop a secure attachment and  know that no matter where you go, I am here when you return (This is developing healthy attachment.)   Play is also a valuable way that children grow and develop.  Each parent’s view toys as serving different purposes (Halberstadt & Lozada, 2011; Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).  Some parents see toys as ways to distract kids but then some view play as a child’s job and an essential aspect of learning.  This view also varies by culture.  Cultural beliefs infuse parent-child interactions and learning (Roopnarine & Davidson, 2015).

By Day 5 Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ posts and explain how culture could influence the demands and expectations of settings within a system your colleague described.

colleagues post

I actually learned about the ecological model when I was in undergrad during an Adolescent Development class I took on a study abroad in Costa Rica. We had to write down examples of each system specifically relating to our personal life, and then volunteer to share our examples and why we put them there. It was a neat discussion.

What I like about the model provided for us in this week’s resources is that you can clearly see that the circles closest to the “self” are the ones the most influence. Because each systems causes the self to be less attached or focused on the other systems, they’re not balanced and become “rivals for dominance”, which makes sense, as this is true with systems in general (Caws, 516).

The most dominant systems include the microsystem and the exosystem. When I think of the dominance of the microsystem in my life and who that includes, I consider my family (parents, siblings, husband) and my peers (coworkers) and the heavy influence over them in my life, as well as the time I devote to them. The dominance that my microsystem plays on my life is noticeable, and does keep me from being as dominated by the other systems, like my exosystem.

For example, the expectation regarding my husband may include being home in the evening to cook him dinner, taking the time to grocery shop for him, going on dates or bringing him along to social gatherings, etc. could keep me from focusing on things that I include in my exosystem, such as focusing my time on schoolwork, visiting my neighbors as often, taking trips to visit long-distance friends, etc. This strain on the exosystem and other systems causes those systems to have less influence over my life, habits, decisions, etc.

Indian women that are mothers are primarily responsible for raising their daughters to the gender socialization culture in India. According to Hindu doctrine, women where created to provide company for the men, and to facilitate procreation, progeny and the continuation of the family lineage, (Char, 2014). Women are expected to remain home and take care of the family, while the husband goes out and finds work. Although their contribution to economic survival was vital, women’s social status remained secondary and supplemental to that of men. Women are often less educated and less wealthy because of the need to stay home and remain a caretaker (Buckley, 2015).

In Indian culture, women where considered to be subservient to their male counterparts. Either by religious dictation or cultural custom, the females in society were expected to be serve as child barriers in order to propagate the family lineage of her male companion. Women are supposed to be supervised by a male whether it be the husband, older son, or father, when going into the village. Women are also not allowed to learn how to drive because of the supervision rule (Buckley, 2015). In their culture this is supposed to be a luxury for women to not have to worry about the stress of driving. However, I feel this puts limitations on women being able to go where and when they want.

The sex ratio among the Indian children is primary masculine. There are reports that 100 million baby girls were missing from India. Also, there are about 41 million “missing women” died from maltreatment and resulted in a male-biased population. This bias is also seen as the children are growing up. The male child will receive attention and food where the female child will appear neglected. These girls present signs of malnourishment which is called stunting (Pillai & Ortiz-Rodriguez, 2015).

Psychological Disorders and Treatment

Describe a fictitious client (not a real person) who suffers from one of the mental illnesses you read about this week, and provide a brief description of the various symptoms your fictitious client displays. Your post should also:

    • Identify a diagnosis that could possibly fit this client. Provide a clear rationale for the diagnosis based on the symptoms presented.
    • Discuss treatment options for your fictitious client, using at least one biological, one psychological, and one social intervention (the biopsychosocial model).

Here is a sample response to get you started:

Joe is a middle-aged 45-year-old Caucasian male. He has been married for 20 years, and has been working at the same job for the past 10 years as an accountant. He is a busy working dad, the father of two children: a 5-year-old daughter (Josie) and a 10-year-old son (Carl). Joe coaches his son Carl’s baseball team, runs about 1-2 miles a day, and plays basketball once a week with his buddies at the local YMCA. Three months ago, Joe’s company had some layoffs, and his job was cut along with 5,000 others due to the economic downturn. Since that time, Joe has been extremely depressed and withdrawn, and he reports that he doesn’t enjoy activities that he used to like running or playing basketball. He turned over his coaching job to the assistant coach of the baseball team and states that he just doesn’t have the energy to do much of anything anymore. Some days, he feels so depressed he stays in bed for the entire day. He adds that he spends most of his time on the couch in his bathrobe watching TV and playing poker online.

These symptoms have persisted for the past three months—pretty much all day, every day. Joe’s wife has since returned to work full-time to help pay the bills, and Joe reports that this makes him feel like a failure. Joe’s children are worried and want to spend time with him, but Joe tends to push them away due to his feelings of sadness and shame for “letting them down.” Overall, Joe is in good health and does not have any other medical conditions or concerns.

As per the DSMIV-TR, it appears that Joe could be diagnosed with major depression due to his symptoms of anhedonia and feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and shame lasting for three months.

In terms of treatment, an antidepressant medication may be helpful to assist Joe in getting through this difficult time. A consultation with a psychiatrist would be in order here. This medication would be considered a biological intervention. Additionally, Joe would be recommended to participate in weekly sessions with a cognitive-behavioral therapist to help him overcome his cognitive (feelings of failure and shame) and behavioral (staying in bed, lying around on the couch, etc.) symptoms. This would be considered a psychological intervention. Finally, a focus on changing Joe’s daily routine would be recommended by encouraging the entire family to eat right and exercise. In addition, making sure that Joe gets to spend time with his friends and is given the support that he needs in getting motivated to begin looking for a new position would be important to add. Both of these latter recommendations would fit as a social intervention.

response question 1

Culture, is an interesting component to human development.  Not only do we learn why we do things but we begin to understand the influences behind it.  Culturally, there is a difference among the way humans interpret this influence.  How it is integrated in everyday life.

Cross-cultural examination is very important when evaluating differences in disorders, development and so on.  One example mentioned by Cole. M, (2013) is the example about a disorder of ASD and different cultures.  The example is that of Asperger’s syndrome, one of the key characteristics is to advert the eyes when talking.  In the Chinese culture this is seen as disrespect, however the child cannot comprehend any different.  Can not easily adjust the behavior.  Cole, goes on to explain that this was confusing back in the 1970’s and was debated between cross cultural examinations among psychologists (Cole. M, 2013).

The importance of cultural examination among a broad spectrum, is to understand where the world is headed.  To apply these theories and study and research for the betterment of human development as it progresses.  In the article by Cole. M, (2013), he mentioned things are similar or circling back to 1970 where there was so much confusion among the way culture was being interpreted.  We could say that is happening again.  Russell, S. T. (2015), argues that, “… if we value the role of human developmental research for promoting social change and justice, we will consider potential or real contribution to social justice as one of these dimensions upon which we judge the merit of research.” This is why it is necessary to value opinion based on research rather than emotion or personal bias.  As good as it sounds and as good intended as it may imply it doesn’t promote better development of the human race or the development of culture.

In our world today, there are repeated characteristics of which we have already been through, and some new ones.  Things seen from movies or predicted in dystopian futures or books.  George Orwell’s 1984, or Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.  If we continue to ignore proper research and don’t carefully examine different cultures, than mental illness and other disorders will plenty of land of which to roam.  What it looks like now is children not being able to read hands on a clock, or having mobile phones at the age of 3 or 9, not knowing cursive.  Changing math as some have experienced this “new” method which doesn’t work.  The importance lies in the statement, “… if we value the role of human developmental research for promoting social change and justice, we will consider potential or real contribution to social justice as one of these dimensions upon which we judge the merit of research.” (Russell, S. T., 2015).
