Starbuck Case

 Starbucks Case Study

Read the three articles noted below about an actual union-organizing effort involving Starbucks in New York City: Use the link for the case.

After reading all the articles and considering additional research, address the following questions (feel free to use supplemental authoritative resources in your response):

  • Do you think the administrative law judge and the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) went too far in overruling Starbucks? Why or why not?
  • How much leeway should an employer have in setting standards for conduct, customer interaction, and attire in the workplace?
  • Does the NLRB decision unfairly limit Starbucks in the management of the stores? Why or why not?
  • What is your view of the court’s decision?

Explain the various modes of transmission for HIV. How does HIV convert into AIDS?

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE ANSWER TO THE ABOVE QUESTION AND WHY? (A MININUM OF 150 WORDS)

                                                              CLASSMATE’S POST

HIV is a retrovirus, a virus that uses RNA as its genetic material instead of the more usual DNA, that now infects over 33 million individuals and kilos almost 2 million a year.  The target of HIV is a specific type of white blood cell called the CD4-Tlymphocyte, or T4 cell.  T4 cells are just one of many components of the complicated immune machinery that is activated when the blood recognizes a foreign invader such as a bacterium or a virus.  In a T4 cell that is infected with HIV, activation of the cell activates the virus also, which then produces thousands of copies of itself in a process that kills the T4 cell.  Thus, destruction of the T4 cell disrupts the entire immune system.  The course of infection with HIV takes place over several years.  After being exposed to HIV, a person may or may not notice mild, flu-like symptoms for a few weeks, during which time the virus is present in the blood and body fluids and may be easily transmitted to others by sex or other risky behaviors.  The infection then enters a latent period, which the viruses mostly hidden in the DNA of the T4 cells, although a constant battle is taking place between the virus and the immune system.  Eventually however, after several years, the immune system begins to lose the struggle, and so many of the T4 cells begin to die that they cannot be replaced rapidly enough.  When the number of T4 cells drops below 200 per cubic millimeter of blood, about 20 percent of the normal level, symptoms are likely to begin appearing, and the person is vulnerable to opportunistic infections and certain tumors.  At the same time, the number of circulating viruses increases, and the person again becomes more capable of transmitting the infection to others.  At this stage, the person meets the criteria for AIDS, which is defined by the T4 cell count and/or the presence of opportunistic infections.

As you learned more and more about the complexity of the HRM role, what do you view as the most challenging aspect of HRM in the international context? How do you view the impact of expatriates on your role in HRM?

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTION AND WHY? (A MININUM OF 150 WORDS)

                                               CLASSMATE’S POST

Human resource managers have been facing a lot of challenges on their line of duty, primarily when working across the bounder (Chew, 2014). Culture and communication can be an issue more especially in small business. There are two main challenges human resource managers face when doing in international business, one is aware of international laws and second is cultural diversity.

    International laws

Once a business expands into a global business, a lot of laws might change in an organization. Laws like labor laws will turn to fit all the employees who will be from a different background. Every country has its way of treating employees; the laws can never be the same hence the law must be changed to fit all. When the necessity for law changing comes in HRM, their work becomes a challenge because they are forced to do proper research on which laws will work for every employee.

                                                    Culture diversity

Working with people who come from different cultures it can be a big challenge since every culture has their skill when it comes to the workforce (Chew, 2014). Every culture when it comes to business. The work of every culture is very different even in the use of technology; with this, it becomes so hard for the HRM to look for a way to balance every employee and to train those who might be having some weakness to fit others.

                                                   Expatriates

Working with expatriates, it is another challenge, because these are people who stay for a while, and later they go back to their country. Training becomes a continuance process making a work of HRM hard (Black, 2015). Expatriates they may want to use their culture in a workplace which might not work in the present country. Working with expatriates also is a challenge you will be required to train them your culture and skills to use in their work.

scuss new legislation as it relates to HR? Are there new laws which need to be develop? In what area and what would the impact be?

2:New legislations and Human Resource Management is an ongoing thing as we evolve as a society and the business world is now global. Some of the more recent laws concern sexual harassment, that might come from a fellow coworker or a manager or owner of a business. There needs to be a culture of anti sexual harrasment established in company’s. Company’s need to make sure that there is a policy and a chain of command to follow in case of an incident. If not the company and individual involved is leaving themselves open for a law suit. I think there should be laws on making sure that not only is the work force diverse but also the key areas of management.

3:Human Resource management must abide by federal Laws as to employee

human rights employee race color or religion, gender can not be tolerated.  Human Resources must assure the work climate is free from sexual harassment. Office policy should be included in the employees orientation.  An employer must not discriminate  an potential candidate for being pregnant,  this must not be an excuse for not hiring the Candidate

4: While I don’t feel that they are inherently enemies, I would say that relationship can deteriorate very quickly. I believe this is because of the interest they serve. I feel that we like to think the Human Resources is just for the people. I also think that we like to believe that the Unions are just for the people. In the end, Human Resources serves their company, and they do what they can for the betterment of both the company and the employees. While the Union does what it can for the Union and the people, it does so for the betterment of the Union as well. This is because the Unions get paid by the dues of the employees, the more they get paid, the more the Union can ask for. This creates a tug-o-war with the employees, I honestly don’t envy those in Unions, that said, I have never been a part of one, so I do not know first hand. Does anyone have first-hand experience?

REPLY TO CLASSMATE’S DISCUSSION NEED IN 4 HOURS

It is imperative that we know the difference between a dependent and independent variable. Using an Online Library, please identify an article on this, and compare and contrast these two types of variables.

PLEASE EXPLAIN WHETHER YOU AGREE WITH MY CLASSMATE RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTION AND WHY? (A MININUM OF 125 WORDS)

In the United States, the issue with drugs has been on a steady incline.  In 2016, there were more than 63,600 drug overdose deaths in the United Stated.  The age-adjusted rate of drug overdose deaths in 2016 was 21% higher than the rate in 2015.  Among persons aged 15 and over, adults aged 25-34, 35-44, and 45-54 had the highest rates of drug overdose deaths in 2016 at around 35 per 100,000.  West Virginia, Ohio, New Hampshire, the District of Columbia, and Pennsylvania had the highest observed age-adjusted drug overdose death rates in 2016.  The age-adjusted rate of drug overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids other than methadone doubled between 2015 and 2016, from 3.1 to 6.1 per 100,000.  The independent variable in this article is the opioid use.  The dependent variable is death rate.

Drug overdose is a complex disease, and a public health issue quitting usually takes a strong will. Drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to. Studies has been done about how drugs affect the brain and have found treatments that can help people recover from drug addiction to lead a productive live.

Drug abuse carries the risk of serious side effects, whether it is abuse of alcohol, an illegal drug such as cocaine, or medications prescribed by a doctor for instance opioid painkillers.

Drug overdose, accidental or intentional occurs when a person takes more than the recommended dose of a prescription or over-the-counter drug. I was surprised to learn that U.S. government does not track death rates for every drug. However, the National Center for Health Statistics at the   Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects information on many of the commonly used drugs. The CDC also has a searchable database, called CDC Wonder. Of the 64,000 drug overdose deaths estimated in 2016, the highest occurred from use of fentanyl and fentanyl analogs (synthetic opioids) with over 20,000 overdose deaths as indicated by CDC WONDER. Which is unfortunate because this is one of the highly control medications in the hospital but easy obtained outside the hospital.

Amending the U.S. Constitution. The formal process of amending the Constitution is

cumbersome and slow. While this fact explains why relatively few amendments have been adopted, it does not

discourage advocates of constitutional change from proposing them. Four amendment proposals that have gained

considerable attention are the Balanced Budget Amendment, the Birthright Citizenship Amendment, the Equal

Rights Amendment, and the Overturn Citizens United Amendment. Select one of these proposals as the topic of

your initial post and use the assigned resources to inform yourself about its purpose and the arguments of its

supporters and critics.

Before writing your initial post, review the assigned resources, which can be downloaded from your online

course.

In your In your initial post of at least 200-250 words, briefly summarize what the proposed amendment would do and the

problem its proponents say it will solve. Explain the main pros and cons in the debate about the amendment.

Evaluate the proposed amendment from two perspectives:

a. Your own political philosophy, values or ideology. (Justify your assessment by clearly explaining your

political values and why they lead you to support or oppose the amendment.)

b. The likelihood that the proposed amendment will eventually be ratified to become part of the

Constitution. (Justify your assessment by explaining how the proposal will or will not, in your judgment,

survive the ratification process.)

Fully respond to all parts of the question. Write in your own words. Support your position with APA citations to

two or more of the assigned resources required for this discussion. Please be sure that you demonstrate

understanding of these resources, integrate them into your argument, and cite them properly.

By Day 7, respond to at least two of your classmates’ initial posts. Your peer responses each must be at least 75

words. They must demonstrate critical thinking (e.g., ask a relevant question about your peer’s post while

explaining why your question is significant, or state a perspective that contrasts with your peer’s while explaining

or justifying your position

1:  Looking for someone who gets their work done right, done fast and pushes harder because they want and needto succeed? Hire a single parent. They can tackle anything you throw at them. Why? Single parents are survivors. They don’t have the comfort or safety of a second income. They get right to the point, and if something needs to be said, they say it. If something needs to be done, they do it. They don’t have the time for politics, or drama, or mistakes. Single parents are incredible employees, to keep them, and to get the best out of them, I’ve had to create a work environment that gives them what they need to be successful. Yeah, they might need to take off at 2 pm to pick their kid up from school or go to a doctor’s appointment. This might piss some employers off, but it’s business as usual here. Single parents need flexibility. The payoff is that when you invest in employees and give them that kind of flexibility they return that investment with their loyalty, hard work, and dedication.

2: Temporary work or temporary employment refers to an employment situation where the working arrangement is limited to a certain period of time based on the needs of the employing organization. Temporary workers are normally staffed through temp agencies. An individual typically hired to help a business meet increased short term demand for its product or services that do not have the status of permanent staff is a temp. A temporary work agency, temp agency or temporary staffing firm finds and retains workers. Other companies, in need of short-term workers, contract with the temporary work agency to send temporary workers, or temps, on assignments to work at the other companies.

3: Talent management is a business strategy that organizations hope will enable them to retain their top talented employees. Just like employee involvement or employee recognition, it is the stated business strategy that will ensure the attraction of top talent in competition with other employers. Talent management does give managers a significant role and responsibility in the recruitment process and in the ongoing development of and retention of superior employees. In some organizations, only top potential employees are included in the talent management system. In other companies, every employee is included in the process.

4: Interviews have been used by almost all employers in the process of hiring. Earlier the selective interviews were not as reliable and valid as they are today. Today they are seen as reliable and valid, as well the deciding factor of hiring. However in the end it all depends on how the interview is administered. An interview is a conversation where questions are asked and answers are given. In common parlance, the word “interview” refers to a one-on-one conversation with one person acting in the role of the interviewer and the other in the role of the interviewee. The interviewer asks questions, the interviewee responds, with participants taking turns talking. There are many different types of interviews such as: situational interviews, structured interviews, and individual interviews. The structured situational interview which is when the candidate and the interviewer are one on one happen to be the most useful for predicting job performance.
