Assignment Instructions One of the most important aspects of the learning process is applying feedback provided by your instructor. For this Assignment, here is what you need to do. Review your instructor’s comments and the iRubric carefully. Revise your first essay (Essay 1, Week 2) to show that you understand and have applied the feedback provided.  (Example: Perhaps you were marked down for using second person (you): “You are exposing yourself to many dangers if you smoke.” Simply correct the error: “Smoking presents many dangers.” The sentence is now in third person.) Save your essay as follows: Smith_REVISED_Essay1. We will not use Turnitin for this Assignment since your essay was previously submitted. Please note that your essay will NOT be regraded. Your instructor will examine your paper to see if you have made the necessary corrections. If so, you will receive full credit for this Assignment. (Important: It is unlikely that you will receive partial credit for this Assignment. If you have not made the necessary corrections, your instructor might ask you to revise and resubmit before you are given full credit. Your success in this course hinges on your learning from feedback, so you must be able to demonstrate that your writing is improving as we move along in this course.) Finally, at the bottom of your essay (after paragraph five), please respond the following questions. Do you understand your feedback?  Do you have any questions for your instructor? Do you have any problems or concerns that you would like to discuss with your instructor? Is there anything we can do to help? That’s it! Good luck and let me know if you have questions.    at the bottle my teacher said i did this wrong someone fix this

Sherman williams APU  Effects of Smoking  Smoking in detrimental to the body of consumers. It affects all the body parts thus rendering the humans to multiple diseases which reduces the health soundness of the individuals. In U. S, over 480,000 deaths annually are caused by smoking cigarette. More deaths has occurred in the U. S due to smoking than the deaths caused by war in U. S. over 90% of the smokers die due to lung cancer. This affects alveoli which then reduces the effectiveness of lungs thus causing respiratory complications (Peinado, 3069). Cigarette smoking increases the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The rate of development of heart disease and stroke is higher in smokers. Two out of four smokers are likely to suffer from coronary heart disease and stroke than nonsmokers.  The diminished health of the smokers increases work absenteeism and thus lowers productivity of smokers in various sector of the economy. Frequency of hospitalization and treatments of the diseases caused by smoking cigarette raises the cost of healthcare, strains the healthcare facilities and eats into the resource of the victims (Sayin, 201). Smoking also damages the victims’ blood vessels. It thickens or causes them to become narrow thus hampering the blood flow and pressure. Narrow blood vessels increase blood pressure and also may lead to vessel clotting thus blockages. Brain parts, legs and other body parts are deprived from blood circulation and some vessels may burst spilling blood in the brain. The cells die due to lack of oxygen and nutrition thus causing gaining or sudden deaths (Peinado, 3069). Smoking affects the mouth odor and the color of the victims’ teeth. Smokers’ breath is usually smelly. The teeth turn brown and gums may develop complications which will result to tooth rloss. In women, smoking reduces their fertility rates and increases cases of still births. Preterm delivery, Sudden infant death syndrome, ectopic pregnancy and birth of infants with orofacial clefts is frequent. Children from smoking mothers are usually lighter compared with normal children. Smoking reduces the strength of bones and thus increases the risk of broken bone (Sayin, 202). Other impacts of smoking include reduction of the sight of the victims. It may trigger an age-related macular degeneration (AMD) which retards vision. It causes type 2 diabetes mellitus and also makes the control of the disease difficulty. Smoking also causes body inflammation and decreases the immunity of the victims. It is also known to initiate rheumatoid arthritis (Sayin, 204). Definitely having carefully read through the feedbacks, I understand them. Consequently, I do not have any question, problem or concerns that I would like to discuss with the instructor over the essay.  My take is that a lot has been done to bail me out and will try my best to improve on the essay.      Work cited Peinado, Victor I., et al. “Plasma Levels Of Angiopoietin-2 In COPD: Effects Of Smoking And Pulmonary Hypertension.” B27. Feedback Please review the directions to this assignment. You are to read the comments sent to you on Essay One.   Then you are to use those comments to REVISE that essay. You keep turning in some essay about smoking and your essay ONE was NOT about smoking. Smoking is not even a topic that could be used for Essay One. You wrote about  a Christmas trip to Jerusalem for Essay One.  I will happily change your grade when you resubmit.

hw into your words pick any topic

Class,     One thing we can never get enough of is practice with library research and documentation. Let’s do more of it this week.      Select a PERSON, PLACE, or THING that you are interested in learning more about. This topic should be different from anything you have researched thus far during this course.     Using our library, locate ONE peer-reviewed article about this topic. Answer the questions below. Please number the questions, respond in complete sentences, but do not copy and paste the questions.     What is your topic?  (Examples—Michael Jackson or Paris, France) What interests you about this topic? What do you already know about this topic? (Hint: it is helpful to select topics that you already know a little something about. This helps you avoid this problem: “I didn’t know anything about my topic, so I used quotes and paraphrases for my whole essay.”) What else would you like to know about this topic? Read the entire article. Please provide a brief summary of your article. This should be in your own words. Do not copy and paste from the article, though you may include citations.  Pick one sentence from the article and put it here in either a quote or paraphrase. Please include a signal phrase and parenthetical citation. Pretend you are going to write an essay about this topic. List three topics that you would like to focus on for your thesis and body paragraphs. (Examples—three places you would like to visit in Paris, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre museum, and Père Lachaise Cemetery OR Michael Jackson’s childhood, accomplishments in music, and tragic death) This is how the article I chose would look on a Works Cited page. Use the library cite button!

Please read the instructions in each forum area carefully. Make your initial post by Wednesday, 11:55 p.m. ET. All other replies are due by Sunday, 11:55 p.m. ET.  Each initial post should be at least 250 words. Also, respond to at least TWO fellow students’ initial posts with at least 50 words each. Please do not simply compliment them on a job well done. Ask questions and/or provide thoughtful insight and continue the discussion they have started. You are also expected to reply to anyone who responds to your initial post. Remember, this is our place for our classroom discussion, so it’s important to keep the conversation going!  Label your parts for easy reading. Write in complete sentences but do not copy and paste the questions or instructions into your post. (This will not count towards your word count requirements.) Put all required parts in ONE initial post. Save your work to your desktop (or USB, cloud, etc.) first. Then copy and paste your work into the forum area using the “Paste as Plain Text” or “Paste from Word” icons. Use the “Start a New Conversation” button for your initial post. Click “Reply” to respond to fellow students’ posts. Your instructor will submit your work through Turnitin, so please ensure that your posts are completely your own work.

The Glass Castle – Abuse Writing Assignment

Name:

Using the provided quotes from The Glass Castle, and support from a provided article, explain how Jeannette Walls was a victim of child abuse.  Make sure your quotes properly support your argument and are integrated into your response.  Your body paragraphs should be written in ALICE format.

Thesis statement (one sentence focusing on two main points):

Body paragraph 1 (focusing on FIRST main point from thesis statement):

Body paragraph 2 (focusing on SECOND main point from thesis statement):

The Glass Castle Quotes About Abuse:

“I am your mother, and I should have a say in how you’re raised” (Walls 26).

“Mom felt that Grandma Smith nagged and badgered, setting rules and punishments for breaking the rules. It drove Mom crazy, and it was the reason she never set rules for us” (Walls 21).

“Some parents worried that their kids might get hit by lightning, but Mom and Dad never did, and they let us go out and play in the warm, driving water. We splashed and sang and danced” (Walls 16).

“If you don’t want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (Walls 66).

“We had no pillows, but Dad said that was part of his plan. He was teaching us to have good posture. The Indians didn’t use pillows, either, he explained, and look how straight they stood” (Walls 18).

“‘It was the only thing to eat in our house,’ I said. Raising my voice, I added, ‘I was hungry’” (Walls 69).

“You’re not supposed to laugh at your own father, ever” (Walls 83).

“He simply waited for me to fork over the cash, as if he knew I didn’t have it in me to say no” (Walls 209).

“She’d been reading books on how to cope with an alcoholic, and they said that drunks didn’t remember their rampages, so if you cleaned up after them, they’d think nothing had happened. ‘Your father needs to see the mess he’s making of our lives,’ Mom said. But when Dad got up, he’d act as if all the wreckage didn’t exist, and no one discussed it with him. The rest of us had to get used to stepping over broken furniture and shattered glass” (Walls 113).

“Unloved children grow up to be serial murderers or alcoholics” (Walls 83).

“At times I felt like I was failing Maureen, like I wasn’t keeping my promise that I’d protect her–the promise I’d made to her when I held her on the way home from the hospital after she’d been born. I couldn’t get her what she needed most–hot baths, a warm bed, steaming bowls of Cream of Wheat before school in the morning–but I tried to do little things” (Walls 206).

“‘Okay, kids’ Dad said, ‘the civilians are revolting. We better skeddadle'” (Walls 109).

“When Dad went crazy, we all had our own ways of shutting down and closing off, and that was what we did that night” (Walls 115).

“‘Your father’s the only one who can help himself,’ Mom said. ‘Only he knows how to fight his own demons'” (Walls 117).

“Just remember,” Mom said after examining the blisters, “what doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.”  “If that was true, I’d be Hercules by now,” Lori said (Walls 179).

“Being homeless is an adventure” (Walls 255).

“We may not have insulation,” Mom said as we all gathered around the stove, “but we have each other” (Walls 177).

Discussion Question- Project Management

Discussion Question- Project Management

Consider one of the following ethical situations that could arise when a company such as Trillo Apparel Company requests an outside contractor to perform work.

Situation 1

You need to hire contractors for the electrical work. You also know that getting the permits is going to be very difficult and may delay your project. You have a friend in the electrical business who knows an inspector that can be bribed to move your inspections to the top of the list. If you hire your friend’s company, you know you will have your inspections completed on time.

Situation 2

You need to hire inexpensive labor to build your work benches for the production floor. You have a bunch of college friends who are in need of work and the pay is good for this work. You also feel you might have more control over the workers since they are your friends. You know that your company usually takes bids for this type of work

Choose one situation and determine what potential ethics are involved in that situation. Discuss what you would do in this situation. Explain your reasoning.

English comp. II unit 2 DB

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Assignment:

Now that you have written about the topic that you selected in Unit 1, it is time to explore what others have said about that same topic. To begin the process, use the AIU library databases and online search tools to locate at least 6 sources that are related to your topic.

The best way to begin this search is by first reading encyclopedia articles on the topic, especially the encyclopedias in the AIU library. Encyclopedia articles provide a summary of current information and, most important, a list of books and articles about the topic. You can often find titles of useful works at the end of encyclopedia articles.

Remember, encyclopedias and other reference books (online or print) can be consulted, but their information cannot be cited in your paper. This means that material from reference works cannot be quoted or summarized in your paper. Reference works help you begin your exploration of a topic; however, reference works do not contain original material and therefore cannot be cited in your paper.

After consulting reference works, locate at least 6 credible sources related to your topic. These published works will inform you of arguments that are related to your topic. They can also provide evidence (facts, statistics, quotations, and examples) to support your own thesis and main points in the research paper that you will write later in the course.

There are two types of citations in APA style: in-text citations and reference citations. An in-text citation is an abbreviation. A reference citation lists all relevant information about a source. The following is a paragraph from a research paper on preventing juvenile delinquency that illustrates the difference between in-text and reference citations:

According to one expert, “Numerous warning signs can alert parents to children who are at risk of violent behavior later in life” (Friedman, 2014). Parents know that a child does not suddenly have moods swings and violent outbursts without some warning sign. Recognizing these signs in childhood can help prevent adolescent delinquency.
Friedman, J. (2014). The terror within: Recognizing and dealing with violent tendencies in children. Pediatrics for Parents, 23(4), 13.

The author and date in parentheses (Friedman, 2014) is an in-text citation. It appears in the sentence where the source was used and is an abbreviated form of the reference citation. All of the information in the paragraph was the student writer’s except what was in the sentence that included an in-text citation.

After the paragraph, you can see the full reference citation of the source. The reference citation provides all of the information that someone would need to find this source.

Complete the following for your assignment:

  • Create a list of 6 sources that you will find useful in developing your topic as you write about it in the next paper.
  • Each source must be listed as a reference citation. You should follow each reference citation for the 6 sources with a short paragraph of 3–4 sentences in which you comment on the source. You should comment on the author’s main points and how the source may be of use to you when writing your paper.
    • Did you find any strong arguments in the source that you had not thought of?
    • Did the source make you rethink your position in any way?
    • Did you see any facts, statistics, quotes, or examples that you could use to support your thesis?
  • Each reference citation must be in APA format. Several resources are available to help you format your reference citations in correct APA style, including the following:
    • You can refer to your eBook, English Composition. In your textbook for this course, please see “Reference Style” on page 191. Sample reference citation formats begin on page 192.
    • You can use citation machines. The most popular and most accurate citation machines are as follows:

Each of the six entries should look like this:

Johnson, D. T. (2011). American capital punishment in comparative perspective. Law & Social Inquiry, 36(4), 1,033–1,061.

Comment–America is the only developed nation that still imposes the death penalty. All other industrialized nations abolished capital punishment in the late 20th century, according to the source. Another peculiarity: although the death penalty is common in America, executions are rare, leaving prisoners lingering on death row for decades. America has the largest death-row population than any nation on earth.

Checklist

  • You should have 6 sources.
  • Each source should be listed as an APA reference citation.
  • A short commentary paragraph should follow each source.

Music! PLEASE READ DESCRIPTIONS CAREFULLY!!!!!

YOU WILL BE WORKING ON AN ALBUM REVIEW.

If you quote something from a published source, make sure it is PROPERLY CITED.

All Album Reviews must be on artists/bands from the time frame covered (1930-1990’s).  It can be any band/artist, but their carer must have started BEFORE 2000.  You may use their latest release if you wish.

Your Album Review (no longer than TWO PAGES) Please include the following on the top left corner of the 1st page.

NAME OF GROUP/PERFORMER:

INSTRUMENTS OR VOCALS USED:

NAME SOME OF THE SONGS/PIECES THAT ARE ON THE RECORDING Use a few examples to illustrate your points in the following sections.  If you are reviewing a “Concept Album” such as “Thick as a Brick” where there is only one piece, use relative time markings (five minute mark-does not have to be precise).  Also, indicate what influences are present in the performers style and compare/contrast that with performers and styles that preceded them.  Identify song formats (AABA, 12 bar blues), and describe the style the album fits into (Disco, Folk, New Wave).

NAME SOME OF THE MUSICAL/PRODUCTION TECHNIQUES THAT WERE USED  You must try to use some musical vocabulary here and explain the musical terms in the context of the recording. This can be a listing of musical or production techniques but you must explain the terms and how they were evident in the making of the album. This is where you will have to do some research on how they played, and how the album was recorded.

WHAT WAS YOUR OVERALL IMPRESSION OF THE RECORDING?  WRITE A BRIEF SUMMARY OR DESCRIPTION. This assignment is about being an “engaged listener” and then attempting to put what you hear into musical terms, which is quite different from saying whether you liked it or not. Discuss the impact or significance the album had within the context of history, style and culture.  To a certain extent, some subjective observations will be made; for example, a piece might sound like a blues to you, even though in strictly musical terms that is not the case. All that is asked is that you try your best at grappling with the MUSIC, and not just reporting your own impressions.

You must use an actual “ALBUM” not a mix of your favorite songs by an artist or band.

English comp. II unit 1 IP

The word argument usually conjures up images of agitated people disagreeing with each other, often emotionally. In academic writing, the argument or persuasive essay is not about confrontation. Instead, this essay relies on detailed evidence, cool logic, and precise language to persuade readers to accept a viewpoint or to take an action. This ability to make a reasonable, persuasive case for your point of view can be one of the most important skills for your advancement in the workplace.

For this Individual Project, you should either choose one of the topics below or devise one of your own (with your instructor’s approval) and write a short argument or persuasive essay. As you discovered in your reading, you will assert a position on the topic and then defend that position so well that others might agree with you. Remember, the argument or persuasive essay is not a personal rant. Your goal is to appear unbiased.

One of the ways of achieving a level of objectivity is to consider counterarguments against your position. Therefore, at least one of your paragraphs should include some discussion of a counterargument. For example, if you write in favor of abolishing the death penalty, you might devote some discussion to the loved ones of a murder victim, the need for these survivors to gain closure, or even their demands that the perpetrator meet a similar fate as the loved one taken from them.

You are welcome to rely on the five-paragraph essay structure of English 106. Click here for a sample outline for an argument or persuasive essay.

Topics

Click here for the suggested topics list for the argument or persuasive outline.

Note: You may choose one of the topics provided. If you wish to devise your own topic, please seek your instructor’s approval of the topic before you begin writing.

As you choose your topic, keep in mind that your goal in English 107 is to create, week-by-week, a college-level research paper. You will submit a final draft of this paper at the end of Week 5. Although you will be allowed to change topics if needed, you should choose a topic this week that you will be comfortable researching and writing about throughout the course. Regardless of the topic that you choose, be sure to complete the following:

  • Format your essay in APA manuscript style. Watch this video for step-by-step instructions: APA style at AIU.
  • Include an introduction paragraph (place your thesis statement at or near the end of this paragraph).
  • Develop at least 3 main points in 3 body paragraphs, and include at least 1 counterargument.
  • End the essay with a wrap-up or conclusion paragraph.

Checklist

Format the pages of your project in APA manuscript style in the following order:

  • Title page
  • Abstract
  • Essay

Note: Do not research this essay or include any citations.

Outsourcing: A Strategic Advantage?

Outsourcing: A Strategic Advantage?

Outsourcing: A Strategic Advantage?

Outsourcing may provide tremendous advantages for firms. It may allow companies to specialize, reduce costs, and focus narrowly on the core competencies they deem strategic; however, companies also have to think about what they may lose both qualitatively and quantitatively. For example, when outsourcing, managers need to be certain that what they source from outside is not a key component of their value proposition.

A way to reduce those risks is to use an approach called vertical integration. The meaning of vertical integration is developing the ability to produce goods or services previously purchased or to actually buy a supplier or a distributor. It can take two forms: backward and forward. These forms relate to how the corporation moves in its supply chain to pursue the vertical integration. If the movement is towards the suppliers, it is called backward integration. Conversely, it is known as forward integration.

Using the online library resources, and the Internet, research outsourcing. Based on your research, respond to the following:

  • What are the risks and benefits of the outsourcing approach?
  • What are the strategic advantages of outsourcing to vertically integrated firms?

Write your initial response in 300–500 words. Your response should be thorough and address all components of the discussion question in detail, include citations of all sources, where needed, according to the APA Style, and demonstrate accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation
