Sensory Adaptation

You have just been asked to teach the concept of adaptation to a psychology
class. You decide to conduct the following experiments to teach the concept of

adaptation.

Task 1: Conduct three of the following
experiments. Record your reactions, and be specific for each experiment.

Experiment 1:

·         Rub your index fingers gently over a piece of very coarse sandpaper a few
times and rate its coarseness on a scale from 1 (very soft) to 7 (very

coarse).

·         After a minute or two, rub the same finger over the paper and again rate its
coarseness. Did your perception of the coarseness change? How? Record your

reaction.

Experiment 2:

·         Prepare one cup with sugar water and one with fresh water.

·         Take a sip of the sugar water and swish it around in your mouth for several
seconds without swallowing it. Gradually, it should taste less sweet. (Dispose

of the sugar water)

·         Taste from the cup containing fresh water. Did the taste of the fresh water
surprise you? How? Record your reaction.

Experiment 3:

·         Take about 15 index cards and a flashlight that is opaque on all sides (so
that light shines only through the front) into a very dark room.

·         Place all 15 cards over the beam of light.

·         Slowly remove the cards one at a time until you can barely detect the light,
and then count the number of cards that remain over the light.

·         After a few minutes, the light should begin to look brighter. When this is
the case, add cards and see if you can still see the light.

·         Repeat this process of gradually adding cards over a 15-minute period. Were
you able to detect an increasingly dim light the longer you spent in the

dark? Record your reaction.

·         How many cards did it take to not see the light after time?

Experiment 4:

·         Fill 3 medium-sized bowls as follows:

o    Bowl 1 – with very hot (but not painfully hot) tap water

·         Bowl 2 – with very cold tap water

·         Bowl 3 – with a mixture of the very hot and very cold water.

·         Arrange them, so your right hand is in front of the cold water, your left
hand is in front of the hot water, and the lukewarm water is in the middle.

·         Submerse your hands into the water (right into cold, left into hot) for
about 3 minutes

·         After 3 minutes, quickly transfer both hands to the lukewarm (middle) bowl.
What did you sense? Record your reaction.

In all four experiments, you will experience adaption.

Task 2: Write a paper that describes adaption and how you
experienced it in your experiments. The paper should cover the following.

·         Fully describe the process and results of the experiments that you
chose.

·         What is sensory adaptation? Explain the concept of sensory
adaptation. Refer to your text for the definition of sensory adaptation (this is

not the general dictionary definition)

·         Explain how adaptation is evident in each of your experimental
results.

·         Provide a comprehensive description of the sensory systems that are involved
in the experiments that you performed. This description should include what

happens from the receptors to the brain. Your discussion should illustrate what

was experienced in each experiment.

·         Discuss how adaptation is important from an evolutionary perspective.

Be sure to document your references using APA format.

Emergency and Disaster Management

Handling Influx and Evacuation

The ability to deal with the unexpected influx of patients is a key challenge in a disaster scenario. In order to be truly prepared, a healthcare organization must be ready to deal with the increased number of patients. In some cases, the military is also available to assist in dealing with the influx of patients. The military is highly trained and has a vast number of resources that most citizens are not aware of. They are equipped and have the skill-set and the mentality to respond efficiently to disasters.

Using the South University Online library or the Internet, search some articles on civilian response to disaster situations and military disaster response process. Based on your research, answer the following questions:

  • Would you request the military to assist you in dealing with the influx of patients at the hospital? Why or why not? If yes, how would you use the military, and if no, what would you and your staff do to deal with the influx of patients?
  • How would you go about garnering the assistance of the military if the situation called for it?

Following Hurricane Katrina, a hospital needed to be evacuated because of the rising water. The evacuation was conducted in stages as the patients were moved to other safe hospitals in batches using a helicopter, an ambulance, and a boat. After four days, the evacuation was complete, thanks to a coordinated effort with other agencies such as the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. In regard to the given scenario, answer the following questions:

  • What would have happened if the hospital had not been assisted by other agencies? Why?
  • How would you have addressed the situation? What would you include in your disaster plan to handle such a situation? How?

Support your work. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

WEEK 5 FINAL PAPER

To begin, select a topic from the following list:

  • Body art and ornamentation
  • Child rearing practices
  • Healthcare practices
  • The use of music or dance as a form of political protest, or as a reflection of cultural issues, values, and beliefs
  • Educational practices
  • Elderly care
  • Body language and proxemics
  • Rites of passage
  • Conflict resolution
  • Marriage practices
  • Alternative gender roles
  • Alternate topics are possible, but these must be approved by your instructor at least one week before the Week Three draft is due.

For your final paper, you will compare one of the topics above across two specific cultures of your own choosing. It may be helpful to brainstorm a list of cultures you are interested in researching. Then, you will need to begin conducting research on those cultures.

For this assignment, you will expand your it into a five- to seven-page research paper (excluding the title and reference pages) that contains the following components:

  1. A discussion of how two cultures (other than your own) approach the topic, including specific ethnographic examples. Be sure to choose two specific and contemporary (currently existing) cultures. Terms such as European, Asian, or African refer to continents, not cultures, and are not appropriate for this paper. Describe the culture briefly, including elements such as location, language, kinship, or other relevant information. This helps the reader understand the cultural context of your topic.
  2. A compare and contrast analysis how the two cultures approach the topic from a culturally relativistic perspective.
  3. A discussion on the cultural context of the topic and how it relates to symbolic systems such as religion, communication, or ritual. Here, you can use what you described in section A and discuss how it relates to your topic as it is found in the two cultures, which you discussed in section B.

Please read this entire communication for important information about your Unit 6 assignment. Below I have included the entire Unit 6 assignment and made some notes (in blue) to help you with the assignment. I have also included the meal that you will be analyzing in the paper. To earn the most points possible, please consider the following tips as well.

Follow the word minimum (1000 words) and provide a full discussion of each answer (no word max for this paper);

Use APA format and include in-text citations for any and all references (APA tutorials can be found in Doc Sharing);

Review the rubric for the assignment (see below) and make sure you have included all elements of the assignment

Avoid using quoted material if at all possible. Put ideas into your own words to demonstrate a solid understanding of the information.

Unit 6 Assignment: Impacts of a borderless society

We live in a world where geographic boundaries cease to exist when it comes to goods, services, and even food. We think nothing of having freshly squeezed orange juice or kiwis for breakfast, even if we live in New York City with 10-inches of snow on the ground in the middle of January. We live in an age where everything and anything is available for consumption year-round at your local grocery store. Convenience comes with potentially major ecological and economic impacts that are both positive and negative. For example, the coffee you drink may come from beans imported from Columbia, the sugar you use may come from India, or the steaks you sear on the grill may have come from Argentina. How much fuel was spent transporting these products across the ocean? Were any pesticides used? If so, was it done in a sustainable fashion? Were forests cleared to make room for grazing herds or larger agricultural fields? These are just a few of the many questions we should be asking ourselves when we make our selections at the grocery store.

Explore the following resources in the Kaplan Library, along with the link from the United States Department of Agriculture, to learn more about the foods we rely on and the variety of ways in which we can acquire them.

For this assignment, you will write an essay in which you analyze a meal provided to you by your instructor in the weekly announcement. Address the following questions as you write your assignment.

Meal:

Sirloin steak

Baked potato with butter and sour cream

Canned green beans

French bread with butter

Chocolate pudding

Assignment:

· If you were to purchase each item at a local chain grocery store, where would these items be sourced? For example, where were the fruits, vegetables, and/or meats grown immediately prior to sale? Do not discuss the history or origin of the item i.e., “corn or maize originated in Mexico around 2500 BC.”
To trace the source, you can decide on the brands and types of food in the meal above. For example, you can choose the brand and type of canned green beans. Trace the origins of the food back to their direct origin prior to getting to the store. You do not have to trace every ingredient! Just provide the prior location or source for main ingredients. You will elaborate on this in question 2 (below).
· Discuss the events and methods of production that allowed your local grocery store to carry these items. What farming methods were likely used to grow these items and how do these methods impact the environment around the farms as well as the employees who work within these establishments.
· Were the items grown and shipped in from another country?
· What types of processing and packaging must take place in order for you to be able to purchase the product? If you were to follow the suggestions shared within the articles provided above, where could you purchase the items (name specific local places within your community)? If a food item is not available locally, is there an alternative that you could use as a substitute?
This is really a continuation of the first question. You identified the source of the meal components in the first question… now break it down further .. how does it get it to your plate? Discuss what’s involved in production, processing and packaging and shipping. Is it from the US, or another country?
· Discuss the ecological and economic advantages and disadvantages of purchasing food items that are locally sourced versus those shipped from other areas of the country and from around the world. Use your textbook reading for this unit in order to explore the environmental impacts, and use these to further analyze the impacts our food purchases may have on the environment.
Look at the sources listed in the introduction to this assignment for some great resources. Find a few examples of each. You need at least 5 sources for this paper in the References section… this would be a good place to include some of them.
· The food choices we make have the potential to generate both local and global impacts. This can be summarized in the phrase “Think Globally, Act Locally.” Based upon your analysis of the meal provided by your instructor for this assignment, discuss how the choices you make when planning and buying meals might change in the future and how your choices, when combined with those of others, can have a global impact.
This is all your opinion, so think about this question for a bit after you finish your research, and share your thoughts about what the statement “Think Globally, Act Locally” really means to you.

This essay should be a minimum of 1,000-words in APA style format. Provide appropriate citations and references for any information you use in this paper. Your paper should include a minimum of five sources. These can include those provided within the project directions and the course materials. Be sure to avoid copying and pasting large sections of text from any given source. For help with citations, refer to the APA Quick Reference.

Assignment Overview

XCG

THE EXCELLENT CONSULTING GROUP

Communication from Art Epance:

Welcome to this project. ABC Company and Whole Foods Market expect us to provide them with top-notch advice on how to integrate Whole Foods into ABC Company. I will be working on analyzing ABC Company. You will be working on analyzing Whole Foods Market. Review as much information as you can on the Whole Foods Market website, particularly that in the “Investor Relations” section. At a minimum, review the following materials in preparation for your report/analysis:

Required Reading

Reuters Company Profile: Whole Foods Market. Retrieved on November 7, 2012 from: http://www.reuters.com/finance/stocks/companyProfile?symbol=WFM.O

Case study: http://pnphillip.asp.radford.edu/whole%20Foods%20Case.pdf (be sure that you do not rely on this document as your primary source of information, but be sure that you have synthesized information from multiple sources). Review Case Analysis since it is so important in this final course. The purpose of a Case is to show that you have thought critically about the subject matter that you are learning and to make an argument for a Claim about the specific situation in the Case Assignment. Stephen Toulmin has developed an Argument Methodology that is very useful in Making a Case. To review Case Analysis and Toulmin’s Argument Methodology, go to Making a Case page.

Case Assignment

First, you need to do a strategic analysis of Whole Foods Market. The executives want us to provide an independent, objective view of Whole Foods Market’s current strategic position, including full information of Whole Foods Market’s mission, vision and values. They want to identify its current set of strategic goals, and a critical assessment of the competition and the competitive environment (remote and operating environments). Also, they want to see the opportunities and threats Whole Foods is presently facing, and they need a general idea of the company’s strengths and weaknesses. Whole Foods Market and ABC Company want to know if we think they should make any strategic changes or continue with the status quo. Synthesize everything you have learned, provide a final recommendation, and justify your reasoning.

Keys to the Assignment:

  1. Do diligent research on Whole Foods Market. I have included links to various websites above.
  2. As an MBA, you must perform additional research to find information on competition and general trends for opportunities and threats. For the competitive analysis, identify a minimum of three of the top competitive companies and their best-selling services or products – and justify why each is a viable competitor.
  3. Your report should be thorough, and follow closely the outline that I have given you. The final section is the most important one. Use excellent logic and sharp argumentation skills to make your case.

The report must be 5-7 pages minimum and no more than 10 pages.

Assignment Expectations

Your paper will be evaluated on the following seven points:

  • Precision – Does the paper address the question(s) or task(s)?
  • Breadth – Is the full breadth of the subject, that is, the Keys to the Assignment, addressed?
  • Depth – Does the paper address the topic in sufficient depth and include the background reading and other background resources as references?
  • Critical thinking – Is the subject thought about critically, that is, accurately, logically, relevantly, and precisely?
  • Clarity – Is the writing clear and are the concepts articulated properly? Are paraphrasing and synthesis of concepts the primary means of responding to the questions or are points conveyed through excessive use of quotations?
  • Organization – Is the paper well written? Are the grammar, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate for graduate-level work? Are headings included in all papers longer than two pages?
  • Referencing (citations and references) – Does the paper include citations and quotation marks where appropriate? Are the references from the background readings and assignment present and properly cited? Are all the references listed in the bibliography present and referred to via citation?

TIPS AND SUGGESTIONS

  • Optimize your research time: Get an overview of the Case Assignments so you know what information you will be looking for when you do research. As you do research for Case 1, you can also be finding information and data for the other cases, too. Continue this strategy as you do research for the next case and the next, etc. The more information you have about the chosen company, the better you will get to know it. The better you get to know it, the better your analysis will be.
  • You may use a simple diagram to highlight important factors. However, do not use the diagram in lieu of valuable analysis (or to take up valuable writing space). It should be in addition to your 5-7 pages of analysis.
  • Just because you have written the minimum five pages does not mean that you have adequately covered the topic. Err on the side of writing more rather than less.
  • Choose the data you use carefully. Is it relevant and important?
  • Include a cover page and reference page, in addition to the 5-10 pages of analysis described above.
  • Include section headings within the paper.
  • Cite and reference all sources that you use in your work, including those that you paraphrase. This means include citations and quotation marks for direct quotes of more than five words, and citations for that information which you have “borrowed” or paraphrased from other sources.
  • Follow guidelines for well-written papers.

INTERNET RESEARCH TIPS

Search for articles in the business and trade press that give an independent view of the company; you do not want to depend solely on corporate information. Check the financial websites such as Yahoo Finance, MSN Money, Morningstar, Dunn & Bradstreet, and Standard and Poor’s, as well as IBISWorld (http://clients1.ibisworld.com/) for reports by industry and financial analysts. Wiki’s and blogs are good ways to get an “inside” look and helpful for evaluating corporate culture/climate.

Health care System Evaluation in Canada

How is technology, distributed? Is the emphasis of the system on preventive care or acute care?

Canadians have become very concerned on the future status of health care systems in the country and is seen as a top priory among the issues which government should prioritize on ( Canadian Standards Association, 1995). They have called upon the government to fund technology in health care so as to have a sustainable health care system in the future. Provinces and territories in Canada have identified the various areas which need advancement in technology. Such technologies which the government is putting effort to work on them are; major joint surgery, neonatal and fetal technologies, dialysis, organ transplantation, genetic testing and therapy, pharmaceutical segment and other various areas which need advancement in technology.

All provinces hand territories have came up with home care a program which is highly centered on regional service delivery requirements. This is part of new technology which the federal government and the provinces together with territories have worked on so as to improve the health care system in Canada (Michael J Kirby; Marjory LeBreton; Canada. Parliament. Senate. Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology., 2001). This program allows good distribution of health services in Canada. In addition, all provinces and territories have worked hard to improve pharmaceutical sector in the country. This is a key component to Canada’s health care sector. Pharmcare programs have been introduced to all provinces and territories so as to ensure affordable significant pharmaceuticals to clients and patients in the country. This technology also involved drug program information systems and safer dispensing of pharmaceuticals. Drug classes that are integral part in Canada’s spending in pharmaceutical spending have also changed, hence showing changes in drug development. In Canada, diseases such as cancer account for almost 30% of drugs which are being tested from the advancing technology in Canada. Also, cholesterol-lowering drugs usage between 1998 and 2007 had increase from $500 million to 1.9 billion with average annual growth rate of 14.8% (Haerens, 2011). This forced Canada to use the advanced technology to provide preventive care to cut down the high rises of cost from some diseases. In addition, Extra Mural Program which is a home care program was introduced to fight and promote preventive care. Also, prevention and research initiatives towards diseases such as diabetes were introduced. Other diseases which the health care system in Canada is working to prevent through improvise technology include; HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, Traumatic brain injury and Tuberculosis.

design experimental study in health sciences

Design an Experimental Study

Ideally, the variables present in an experimental study can be controlled. There are also many other issues to consider when designing an experimental study.

In this Discussion, you will propose a design for an experimental study and identify some of the issues that could arise as a result of the design. You will then be asked how you would mitigate, or minimize, those issues.

To prepare for this Discussion:

  •
  • Refer to the public health problem you selected last week. Or, choose another public health problem that interests you.
  •
  • Determine a research question for the study.
  • Based on the research question, consider how you would design an experimental study.

post a comprehensive response that proposes an experimental study design for your chosen topic. Your contribution should take into account at least two of the following factors:

  •
  • Informed consent
  • Special populations
  • Blinding
  • Incentives for volunteers
  • Closing a study early
  •

Your post should also answer the following questions.

  •
  • What is the research question for your study?
  • What exposure and outcome variables will you measure?
  • Who will be the participants?
  • How is the method for this week’s study different from the method for last week’s study?
