COM 200 NEW COURSE Week 3 Discussion 2 – Attraction in Interpersonal Relationships

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Reference the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

Attraction in Interpersonal Relationships

Chapter 7 addresses various elements that attract us to other people when we first enter a relationship. It might be just one thing that we like about another person or it could be several things.

Prepare: As you prepare to write this discussion post, take a few moments to do the following:

  • Read the writing prompt below in its entirety. Notice that there are two tasks:
    1. Identify what attracts you to others, based on one of the attraction theories covered by Bevan & Sole.
    2. Share an example of friendship you had that did not start off on solid ground, and explain what happened.
  • Review Chapter 7 in the course text. Focus especially on the section on attraction theory and identify what attracts you to others.
  • Begin with a solid explanation of attraction theory as described in our text. Then, use that theory to think through what attracts you to others. Do not forget to share an example from your own experience.
  • Review the grading rubric.

Reflect: Take time to reflect on how we are attracted to others and what role communication plays in this process. Think about the role of first impressions and how they influence final friendship outcomes.

Write: Based on attraction theory (outlined in our text), address the following:

  • What do you look for in other people when you first meet them? This could be a potential romantic partner or even a platonic friend. List as many qualities as you can think of and how they are related to what you’ve learned in this class about communication.
  • Relate your personal experience to attraction theory (Section 7.3), as described in our text.
  • Share an example of a time when you developed a friendship/relationship with someone whom you did not get along with at first. What initially attracted you to the person?  What changed for you?

Thoroughly address all three elements of this prompt by writing at least two to three sentences on each element. Use the course readings at least once to help you make your points. Consider copying and pasting these tasks into a word file and addressing each of them separately.

Your initial response should be 200-300 words in length and is due by Thursday, Day 3.

Edu 4303 Week 6 Discussion

Child poverty and homelessness are two of the most complex problems faced by society today. Since 2000, the number of children living in poverty has increased from 11.6 million to 15 million. Today, over 20% of all children live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level. In addition, it is estimated that 1% to 2% of children are homeless, a number that has surged as a result of the recent global recession and the ensuing financial strain it has placed on many families. Because growing up in poverty increases children’s risks of suffering physical, cognitive, emotional, and social problems, reducing rates of child poverty is a priority. However, politicians and policymakers often disagree on causes and solutions to child poverty, sparking vigorous debate. In this Discussion, you will consider your own thoughts on how child poverty might be addressed. Reflect on the following:

  • Based on what you have learned this week and your past experiences, what specific policies, initiatives, or programs do you think should be implemented to effectively reduce child poverty/homelessness and/or ameliorate its consequences? Consider at least three.
  • How and to what extent should technology/media be used for educational purposes? For example, should teachers integrate technology as much as possible in their lessons? Should parents encourage children to study using educational software and the Internet? Or are more traditional learning methods preferable?
  • Are there any policies, initiatives, or programs aimed at combating child poverty and/or homelessness with which you strongly disagree? Why?

Edu 1005 Wk2 Discussion

Statistics show that children under the age of 6 are at the most risk for being abused and neglected, with children under the age of 1 having the highest rate of abuse and neglect. In addition, 84% of abusers are found to be parents (Robertson, p. 524). Anyone working with young children has a responsibility to recognize the signs and symptoms of abuse and intervene on the child’s (or children’s) behalf. Your involvement can help change the course of the child’s and family members’ lives.

Reflect on what you have learned about this topic this week and consider the following:

  • The ethical responsibility of early childhood professionals with regard to protecting the health and well-being of young children

  • The short- and long-term ramifications of child maltreatment

  • Your state requirements with regard to reporting child maltreatment

Then, post a response based on the following scenario:

You are a professional working in a day care program for infants and children up to age 4. You begin to notice several signs exhibited by one of the 3-year-olds in your care that indicate possible abuse. You understand that child maltreatment is an extremely complicated situation; however, you also know it is your ethical and legal responsibility to act.

  • What should you do first in order to determine whether or not you are correct in your suspicion of abuse?

  • What intervention methods and strategies might you take in response to the situation?

  • How could you support the child and his/her family through referrals or other means, ensuring that the child is protected throughout the process?

  • What are your state’s procedures for documenting and reporting any observed maltreatment? My state is Mississippi

Discussion one:

Hello Professor and fellow classmates:

According to our textbook, today’s managers perform four management functions. They are planning, organizing, leading and controlling.   Planning is a process that includes defining goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans that coordinate activities. Organizing is the process of determining tasks to be done, who is to do them, how they are grouped and who reports to whom.  Leading is a function that includes motivating and directing employees, communicating and resolving conflicts.  Controlling is monitoring activities to ensure they are being done as planned and correcting any mistakes in those activities as needed. (Robbins & Judge, 2013)

As a caterer, I have performed these functions as follows:  I planned a cocktail reception for 500 people to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Church’s building.  I planned the menu, the decorating of the hall and how many servers the event would need to ensure the best possible outcome for the invited guests.  I organized a volunteer event committee that consisted of the president of the parish, and 10 other key church individuals.  We had 3 months to finalize the details, plan our agenda for the day of the event, and make all the food, order the flowers/centerpieces, the linens, the china and anything else needed for a spectacular celebration.  I led my team through all the planning meetings, directed them in the preparation of the menu items (we made all the appetizers for the cocktail reception, 20 different passed and buffet items), resolved issues with the linen company (they sent the wrong color tablecloths the week before the event), used email and cell phone communication channels for all decisions and activities planned.  The day prior to the event, I was at the church hall controlling and ensuring that all activities where being done as planned, the tables where set with the linen (the new corrected color), the china, the centerpieces and all décor.  I made sure that all the food was being prepared to my specifications and taste, did a half hour training of the service staff (40 of them) to ensure they knew what to serve on what platter and with what accompaniment, and to make sure they had the right tools to do the best job.

This was the largest catering job that I had attempted in my career, so I feel that the planning was the most crucial function that I needed to control.  Organizing and leading where the second most important functions and controlling was the final function performed.  I enjoyed the challenge and I know that we did an exceptional job because I have since booked over 75 (and counting) new events from the people that attended the event and told me how impressed they were with the quality of our food, décor, and organization and how well our staff handled themselves.

The three characteristics that are key to developing professional image are Attire, Confidence, and communication skills. The person who impressed me as a professional is my brother. My brother is Assistant District Attorney for the state of florida,  whether he is in court, or giving a talk to teenagers, or answering questions in a panel of professionals he is always protraying a professional image. My brother first job was at walmart, we both went into are interview dressed in suits, and dressed the same way in our orientation. Later on we found out we were the first hired simply because of the image we presented. Communication skills are very important, as a lawyer the way you speak is vital to your success, when you talk to a jury, you should not stumble over your words, or use words like ums, or pausing in your speech. Confidence is important, sometimes confidence can be persuasive. I need to work on my confidence and communication skills, when it comes to email, and writing im good, i could always do better, its my speech that i need to work on.

Discussion Topic – Characteristics of a Professional

Hello once again Professor & class,

Professionalism is a word that encompasses a lot of different meanings and may have different expectations associated with it, based solely on an individual-to-individual basis. However, many of us can identify what we consider to be a “professional” based on some of his or her characteristics. For example, many of you would probably agree that a professional is someone who is acknowledged as a specialist in their respective field. Or, a person who has gone above and beyond the average person to refine their skills and to improve their chances of success. Similarly, many of us see a professional as someone who has succeed or one who is successful in what they have set out to do.

For me, the foremost important professional characteristic is image. A professional is someone who dresses appropriately, whom is well-groomed, and who has an air of confidence that reassures us that they know what they are doing (Smith, 2014). Although stereotypical, many of us would probably much rather deal with someone who looks professional rather than someone who does not but claims to be. One should be able to identify you as a professional and as such feel comfortable in seeking you out.

Second, expertise – or communication skills which exhibit them. By expertise, I don’t mean speaking mumbo jumbo techy-wiz stuff. I mean an individual who shows an understanding of the subject matter in which he or she practices and the ability to communicate it back to me. For example, if I were to call and ask when an auto shop opened up and the employee said “I don’t know.” I would not consider them a professional for the simple fact that they do not show any knowledge of the business. Or, if they do, they have no demonstrated it by acknowledging my question with a clear and concise answer. A professional, to me, would be someone who is willing to state that they do not know, but also, is willing to find out for you.

Third, self-regulation. Which is the ability to handle an escalating situation. All too often, we find ourselves overwhelmed by emotion or pressure. It could be for any number of factors, however, the idea behind self-regulation is finding the ability to professional handle that situation by staying calm, keeping your business-like demeanor, and doing everything in your power to make things right again (Smith, 2014). And, if needed, re-directing that individual you are having issues with to somebody else who can better handle the situation.

While these characteristics can be applied to just about any field, I find that these three in particular are especially important in Information Technology and as a computer/network technician. For me, I wouldn’t want the guy sitting at my desk, fixing my computer, to smell funky or to be dressed inappropriately. It’s extremely important to be make those around you feel comfortable and trustworthy. Also, going back to expertise, it’s important to demonstrate your knowledge of the system without making the other person feel inferior or stupid about it. If they ask you a question, you should be able to answer; but until then, try to keep things simplistic and easy to understand so they know what’s going on while you work. Finally, it can be frustrating trying to work on a system or get a network backup when you have someone, or worse, your supervisor breathing down your next. But it’s important to realize and to remember that they are depending on you and they rely on your skills to do their own job. Thus, keeping self-regulation is important for not only keeping your professional presence; but also, for keeping your job!

Discussion Post

In a paragraph answer the following question:

1. What is your assessment of Ronald Reagan’s presidency?

Answer Example: To many conservatives Ronald Reagan is considered one of the greatest President’s of our time. His bravado at such an age and his bluntness to the media and the country made him a polarizing figure as president. Even with his popularity there were several black eyes during his presidency that cannot be ignored such as the harm that was caused by scaling back funds for the National Climate Program, cutting back OSHA and finally foreign slip ups in Central American and trading firearms for hostages(Something Reagan swore he would not do) Also his failure in the Middle East along with us eventually helping Afghanistan with Russia in the coming years developed the type of tensions we still deal with today in the “War on Terrorism” as it’s been coined. The “Irangate” issue of trading guns for hostages, which basically showed that President Reagans hands off approach had hurt his presidency, finally went away because Congress did not want to impeach him. “Reagan’s popularity returned, in part because of substantial improvement in Soviet-American relations.” (Davidson et al p. 673) His highlights were just that, considered to help with the end of the Cold War, Reaganomics as it was called, basically appealing the liberal government that had such a grasp on politics for such a long period of time. I believe his personality and American pride made him a perfect fit as far as what people wanted to see, making him one of the most popular Presidents in history. I believe he had good intentions and a lot of his policies looked great on paper but burden the poor and lower class. His hands off approach almost ruined his legacy and his foreign policies were at best questionable. My overall assessment is he did a very average job but many of his mistakes are often overlooked due to how popular he was.

2. United States from 1989 to the present, what continuities with previous periods of American history do you see in the present era?

Answer example: It’s amusing that almost thirty years later the political battles are all almost the same. Illegal immigration, trade and job market and health care have dominated our political sphere since 1989 till now. Ethnic and racial tension is just as high, if not more, than it was in previous decades, leading to marches, riots and political debates on civil rights. The “War on Terror” and in the Middle East in general still rages on almost two decades later and it shows no signs of slowing at this point. One thing I have noticed while taking history courses is that history really does repeat itself. Political battles, health care, reforms whether liberal or conservative, and war have marked our nation since the beginning. It’s a revolving door that I think will continue long after this generation is dead and gone as well. “Yet as John Kennedy warned almost 50 years ago, Americans alone cannot “right every wrong or reverse every adversity” (Davidson et al p. 703)

3. In the 1960s and ’70s what should the United States have done in Vietnam?

Answer Example: In my opinion after the Tonkin Gulf Resolution the United States should have started deescalating attacks against the north and in time withdrawn from Vietnam all together. The idea was brought up in 1965 but was ultimately decided against. “The United States should either increase it’s attack-escalate was the term coined in 1965-or simply withdraw.” (Davidson et al p. 634) Not only would this have helped the baby boomer generation that was being drafted into the service on the civil rights front, it would have saved countless military service members lives in a war that was not only unpopular on the home front but unpopular by those fighting it as well. Even as Nixon took office, his mistakes in Cambodia and Vietnam caused clashes back home while the unpopularity of the war was lowering morale through out units and causing soldiers to not want to fight any longer, especially with no victory in sight. Pulling out earlier or not getting involved at all would have benefited the United States in the long run in my opinion.

Edu 1006 Week 4 Discussion

read the following scenario and reflect on the influence of self-esteem on a young child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development:

Four-year-old Simone always seems willing to go along with what other children want to do but is usually timid about suggesting ideas or helping to solve problems in play scenarios. Her teacher notices that the other children let her join in, but give her the least interesting roles in dramatic play or “jobs” to do in projects that call for group effort. In turn, Simone often tires of the play quickly and wanders off by herself. During the day, Simone looks for frequent reassurance from adults in the room. Whether she’s painting a picture or working on a block building, she wants to know if she is “doing it right” and gets anxious when her efforts aren’t praised. In the mornings when Simone’s mother brings her to school, she is busy with Simone’s infant sister and so doesn’t have time to stay. A neighbor who picks up her own child in the afternoon, picks up Simone as well. Simone’s father, who works at a local “big-box” store has yet to bring Simone to school or visit. Developmentally, Simone seems in the normal range, but her teacher is concerned about how she will do next year in kindergarten, when she will be in a much larger class than her preschool group and there will be added demands on Simone.

By Day 3:

With this scenario in mind and drawing on the expert information in the readings, post responses to at least two of the following:

  • Provide any insight you have regarding Simone’s self-esteem and explain your reasoning.
  • Explain your views on the role of self-esteem in a child’s healthy development.
  • Suggest two ideas that you would use as an early childhood professional to promote the development of Simone’s self-esteem and explain your reasoning.

Week 2 – Discussion 2

read-

  • What are the gender similarities and gender differences hypotheses?
  • How does gender influence how we communicate verbally and nonverbally?
  • In your own experience, do men and women communicate differently? If so, how and why?
  • Why is it important to think about gender when thinking about communication?

Please spend at least two sentences on each of the questions.

Note: While we want you to think through your own experience, this should not be the primary basis of your response. You should use your experience to think through what you have learned in class. Think of your experience as potential evidence you can use to support or refute some claims made in the book or video.

Thoroughly address all four elements of this prompt by writing at least two to three sentences on each element. Consider copying and pasting these tasks into a word file and addressing each of them separately. Your answers should begin with an explanation of the gender similarities and different cultures hypothesis. Use the course readings at least once to help you make those points. You will need to think about both verbal and nonverbal elements and share your observations of how males and females communicate either similarly or differently. Finally, you’ll need to address the general importance of taking gender into consideration when thinking about effective communication.

Gender Performance Assignment

  • After studying the assigned reading, in the attached files. Sociology: The Social      Construction of Gender, considering      the concept of “gender as socially constructed,” answer the following      questions and prompts.

A) How does media create meanings about gender?

B) Provide examples of how this is manifested in our everyday lives.

C) Provide a link to a commercial/ad that stereotypes gender. Even though it is natural to find humor in some of these portrayals, in what ways is this problematic.

Also, consider that sex is a system of classification based on biology and physiology, while gender reflects the cultural meaning that is ascribed to a person’s sex, thus resulting in labels of “masculinity and femininity.” Furthermore, our biology is not distinctively male or female and a significant number of people are born “intersex” with variations in chromosomes or sexual organs. Most biological researchers agree on the estimation that intersex people are about as common as encountering someone with green eyes. It is important to understand that masculinity and femininity are not oppositional, although it seems to be portrayed so in media. In Western society (such as in the U.S. and Western Europe) we typically adhere to certain ideas and values that define masculinity and femininity as we perform the roles. What if the list was different? All of us, in honesty, could reveal that we interchange among the qualities. Take a look at the list and answer the following questions:

Masculinity

o strength

o dominance

o aggression

o independence

o empowerment

o active

o rational   thought

o production

o breadwinner

o subject

o outdoors

o technology

Femininity

o weakness

o submission

o compliance/vulnerability

o dependence

o disempowerment

o passive

o emotion

o consumption

o nurturer

o object

o indoors

o nature

Provide answers to the following questions or prompts in your assignment submission.

D) How is the list being currently challenged?

E) What traits do you have that are typically considered “on the list” of the other sex?

F) What examples do you see in your daily life of people challenging the historic list?

G) What about examples in media of characters or people challenging the list?

H) Finally, do you agree or disagree that gender is socially constructed? Provide evidence that backs your opinion.

Support your responses with research from the Learning Resources. Use APA in-text citations where necessary and cite any outside sources. Create an APA Reference List or Bibliography at the end of the document.

WEEK 3 DISCUSSION (see attached files)

WEEK 3 DISCUSSION

WELCOME to the discussion for WEEK 3. Please respond in complete sentences for each question, unless directed to do otherwise, demonstrating in your reply that you have read the material in order to receive full credit.

Topic 1Fake News

This week, you watched Fake news vs real news (PBS online video):

Discussion:
Fake news is no longer a matter of the occasional hoax. There is growing evidence that fake news has the power to shape public opinion and even sway elections. As more Americans get their news online, it is increasingly vital that we as consumers know how to verify sources and spot fake news.

Questions:

1.  Explain at least two ways fake news could affect the results of future elections or may have affected the recent mid-term election?

2.  What can companies like Facebook and Snapchat do to stop users from spreading fake news? What can we, as consumers, do? What do you think would work, especially with younger users?

Topic 2The Decline of the Newspaper Industry

This week you read “Current Popular Trends in the Newspaper Industry” by Jack Lule

Discussion:
It is clear that the newspaper industry has undergone major changes. Over the next several years, the industry will likely continue to experience a complete upheaval brought on by dwindling readership and major shifts in how individuals consume news. As newspapers scramble to find their footing in an ever-changing business, readers adapt and seek out trustworthy information in new ways.

Question #1:
Pick a recent major national event that interests you. Then, select two papers of the six discussed in the reading and explore the differences in how those newspapers reported on the story. How does the newspaper’s audience affect the way in which a story is presented?

Posting instructions:

Please read this information extremely carefully:

· Please include the topic number and title in your subject name for each discussion throughout the course.. For instance, Topic 1: Fake News.   It has to be clear what you are answering so ensure you clearly label.

· Do not attach answers or files in discussion unless directions state to do so.

· You must respond in complete sentences for each question, unless directed to do otherwise. Ensure you answer each question within the topic as this week there are multiple questions in the topics.

· Minimum Topic Response: Posts need to be at least a 70 words,  substantive and answer all parts.. If your reply for this question is less than 70 words and not substantive, you will lose points. You can use Microsoft Word to count the words in your response to make sure you have met the requirement.

· 🙂  to indicate a smile and lol for laughter  is fine and I may use it myself from time to time in discussion.  I would give deductions for other text speak such as using “u” for “you” etc.

· Each topic must be answered in a separate post.

· Answer posted in an organized manner.

· If references are used they need to be cited appropriately. Realize that to answer substantively you may need to do research and if so reference appropriately.

· Do not in any discussions cover same topic/product/website  etc  for separate topics

· After you post   please review it to make sure it is formatted correctly and is easy to read and has no spelling errors

Discussion 8

Your answers to each of these questions should be at least one paragraph (6-7 sentences) long, and it should show some thoughtful consideration regarding the matters raised in the questions.  Your total set of answers to these questions needs to be at least 200 words.  Also, when you reply to these questions, be sure to insert the letter for each question next to your answer corresponding to that question.

You will also need to reply to at least two students.  When you reply to another student, you do not need to reply to that student’s answers to every single question for this week.  You can just pick their reply to one question and reply to their answer to that question.  Your replies to other students should be at least 100 words long each.

A. Strict exclusivism is the view that there is one and only one absolutely true religion and that only the faithful of that one and only one absolutely true religion will be saved.  Several people have observed that geography is by and large the single biggest indicator of what religion one practices. For instance, if one is born in Saudi Arabia, it is highly likely that she will practice Islam; if one is born in Tibet, it is highly likely he will be a Buddhist, and so on. In light of this fact, do you think it is rational to adopt strict exclusivism? Why or why not?

B. There have been many holy and virtuous people produced by lots of different religions in the world.  Gandhi was a Hindu, while Martin Luther King Jr. was a Protestant Christian.  And the Dalai Lama is Buddhist.  Do you think that the fact that there have been many holy and virtuous people produced by lots of different religions in the world shows that strict exclusivism is false?

C. As we have noted, strict exclusivism is the view that there is one and only one absolutely true religion and that only the faithful of that one and only one absolutely true religion will be saved.  One worry that people raise with this view is that this position is intolerant and arrogant.  Do you agree with that criticism?  Why or why not?

D. Think back over all of the topics we have covered in this class.  At the end, think of the position that we studied that stands out to you as the most plausible.  Summarize that position in your own words and why you find it to be the most plausible.  Also think of the position that we studied that stands out to you as the least plausible.  Summarize that position in your own words and why you find it to be the least plausible.
