Scenario 3 (Mental Health)

The efficacy of two kinds of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in relation to a clinical population were

compared. The therapies differed on the dimension of how wedded they were to the rational-emotive

behavioral therapy (REBT), a subtype of CBT that emphasizes a directive, confrontational approach to

encourage a patient to recognize the irrationality of specific thought patterns. Forty adolescents at an

inpatient clinic for treatment of self-destructive behaviors were randomly divided into two groups of

equal size, one of which received the less challenging type of CBT (Treatment A) and one of which

received the more challenging kind of CBT (Treatment B). All patients were treated by trained therapists

in one-on-one sessions for 1.5 hours per day (broken down into 45-minute sessions) for six weeks. All

participants were apprised that they were part of a study, all participants signed consent forms, and all

were told they would be informed of the results at its conclusion; participants exhibiting any behaviors

that required critical intervention were promptly treated outside the plan of the study. Outcome data

on the Revised Behavior Problem Checklist (RBPC)-PAR Edition* collected at the conclusion of six weeks

as shown below (also found in the Data Set Scenario 3 Excel file).

Introduction

On creation of values based on stakeholders and customers, A lot of keen interest has been taken by IKEA. This will help in the promotion of environmental and development of the company and the social responsibility that will assist the stakeholders and customers in accordance to the company’s success (Colvin, 2008). To promote attributes to satisfy stakeholders and customers’ needs, IKEA has ventured or taken a lot of attention on marketing. This papers demonstrates and discusses the marketing, intangible products, performance measures, customers, and Strategy of IKEA consisting Value Chain

IKEA’s Marketing

To know and understand the needs of the customers, marketing has become the main attribute that lead the company. Marketing ensures that the customers receive the wants they require for the in order to satisfy the sustainability of the stakeholders and that of the customers as well. These contribute in company development and it also ensures that the customer is totally and well taken care of by making available all the resources they require.

Marketing assist the company to value the stakeholders of the company and the customers. This is achieved by presenting the importance of customers and stakeholders to the company. It puts more concentration on the environment as one of the important values as it values since the environment deal with most of the issues affecting the company in the world of management ((Joseph, 2002). Environment is the employees and company there and it illustrates whether they handle their customers well for the company and make them feel more comfortable make them feel more happy and contented when they are buying.

They ensure that there are various development and assist in the company’s growth in the world of competition. Due to the income earned from the customers, economy becomes the other value which ensures the development as they ensure company’s growth in the competition world. The company is assisted by economy to make it fit in the growing economy of the world and ensures that the confidences of the customers are intact in the company as a result of its economy.

The behaviors of the employees in the company are showed by the social values. It ensures the happiness and comfortably in the company as they work for them so that they can relate well the customers. The key that most people ensure that they have so that they can get the normal understanding of the development and show important points on how they recount/relate to the customers in their working area is communication. Communication is therefore an important attribute as it ensures that the employees and the customers have good working relationship in the company (Dr. Mark, 2007).

IKEA’s strategy

Value Chain

In the IKEA Company, there are three value chains. They help in understanding, in the income earned and widely in company development. One of the values that promote the development of the company is economics. This is because economics promotes income generation is not out of force and is much related to the world growing economy. These are so because to the needs of the customers are known to the company management since they ensure that the needs of the customers are accomplished and that of the stakeholders as well. Social value is referred to as the community and that the people involved in these values are the customers. This also helps to develop the company farther as it ensure that there is good relationship between the customers and the employees of the company.

The most preserved to that of the products’ nature and how they affect the customers and the employees are the environmental value (Joseph, 2002). It takes the great choice and value of the customers as they consider the environment and how they are treated whenever they come to the company.

Intangible Products

The IKEA intangible products are designed by the company in such a way that they affect the customer, suppliers and the employees and it has interfered with the nature of the sakes of the products. Sometimes it is a benefit to the customers since they help them in identifying the value of the products and also assist them in understanding the products’ value.

Suppliers benefit from the means of transportation of the products depending on the nature if goods that reach the customers. In all these, it also helps the company to be in position of understanding the strength of and values of their goods ((Dr. Mark, 2007). Those who are majorly affected by this are the employees since they are the ones who experience several difficulties as a result of these intangible products.

The barriers ensures that the products produced or made are different from their competitors as they warrants that the customers get a view of various product even if they pay a visit to their competitive companies. This also certifies that the company is valued because of the fact that there is great assistance in developing world economy.

To all the customers, employees and even the suppliers, these intangible products are of value to them since they have exceptional common nature in the market as results of the goods they supply. The benefits of the tangible products assist the company in the idea on how to enjoy good product of value and this assist in boosting the economy of the company and ensures that the development flow among the workers are maintained (Colvin, 2008). This therefore, enables the company to fit well in the world economy since they have several customers which increases the profit that is earned annually.

Customers

Since customers help in the main development of the company, they are considered the main stakeholders. They are the ones who ensure that they very much comfortable with the IKEA values. The flow of profit and income earned is determined by the customers and the company can possibly loose the customers if they do not develop the values and these can result to the collapse or fall of the company.

Though customers maximize the profit that IKAE make in one year, they can also minimize that profit as it can result to the fall in the income. The products also determine the commitment of the customers since sometimes they may not feel contented with the kind of products being offered to them by the company. It is the customers that determine the operations of the premises.

Sometimes when customers are not pleased with the products supplied to them by the suppliers, they can reject them and this may lead to the fall of the company affecting the economy of the entire country. When the products are in good state or the products are in perfect condition, the demand of those products rises and this makes the employees and the suppliers to work extra time to meet the demand by the customers (Van, Hogan & Kaiser, 2008). This high demand boosts the country’s economy and develops the company further but the employees are affected since they don’t have time to develop their life due to lots of job that is offered to them.

Performance Measures

It is the nature of the organization that determines the performance. These are the customers, managers and employees. One of the measures that determine performance is the attendance of the employees and the customers since it reflects the income flow. Communication is also very important measure at it promptly assist in the supervision of the taken in a certain work and the time wasted.

The commitment of a person to work is determined by regular attendance that is appointed to that particular person in the company. Focusing on customers help the customers in product nature that is offered since it also helps in resource development and still contributes in nature development. Customer service is also another measure of performance. The company may have high buying power from the customers depending on how they are introduced to the available products.

The nature of the negotiations between the customers and the company and how they relate and come up with the product is another measure of performance (Dr. Mark, 2007). Customers also contribute in boosting or raising their confidence and in solving their problem.

Interpersonal relations are also another important measure. The relationship between the management and the employees must be perfect and in good condition to motivate the customers. This will help the way employees view at themselves and the customers too and if the company is worth their services.

In the matters of development, the actions of the employees are very important and matters a lot as they view knowledge and acceptance of the employees. Responsibility is also one of the significant measures which most people lack. Both the employees and the customers should understand that the organization exists because of them. Therefore, they should have the responsibility of developing the company and raising the economy of the country (Ku, 2008).

Recommendations

In my own view, I can recommend that IKAE should increase the number of workers/employees so that whenever there is high demand of the product, employees can be in shift. Some will be working on day shifts while others will be working on night shifts. This will make the company has a rising flow of profit.

Conclusion

Due to the different fantastic styles used by IKAE in designing and the values offered to customers, IKAE has become the largest company. This has made them to post a major challenge to their competitors hence ensuring a continuous growth of the economy and the country at large.

Did Jim and Laura Buy a Car?
Worth 200 points

HINT: See Chapters 10-14 of the text to help understand some of the legal issues covered in this assignment.

Jim and Laura Buyer visit the local car dealership because they are interested in buying a new car. The car they currently have is aging and is starting to have mechanical problems. Jim and Laura would share the new car, and use it to go back and forth to work and school. Before going to the dealership, Jim and Laura decide that they can only afford $400.00 a month in car payments.

Once at the car dealership, Jim and Laura meet Stan Salesman. Stan shows them several vehicles and Jim and Laura test-drive several of the cars. Jim and Laura particularly like the blue 4-door sedan.  Therefore, they agree to give Stan Salesman a $100.00 deposit to hold the car for a day. Stan Salesman does not give them the receipt but guarantees that the $100.00 is refundable. No documents were signed.

The next day, Stan Salesman calls Jim and Laura to ask them when they would like to take delivery of the car. Jim and Laura, on the way home from the dealership, decided that they were not going to buy the car because they did not want to spend that money each month. Therefore, Jim and Laura tell Stan salesman that they have decided not to buy the car and request their $100.00 deposit back.

Stan insists that the $100.00 was a deposit on the car and was meant to be part of the contract to buy the car. Stan is very persistent and insistent that Jim and Laura have contracted to buy the car; therefore, the $100.00 will be applied to the purchase price of the car. Jim and Laura are shocked and angry as not only do they not want to spend the money, but now feel as though they are being duped by Stan Salesman.

Jim and Laura have an appointment to see a lawyer in a few days, but know you are a student taking a business law class and come to you for advice. They are very frazzled, and understandably upset that they may have just purchased a car. Since you have been taking business law, you have read and understand the elements of a contract and the defenses to a contract. Therefore, although you are not a lawyer, you provide some basic advice from what you’ve learned in your business law class.

1: The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest number that will divide into the other factors, in the expression. This means there are no larger factors, or numbers, that can divide into the factors of the expression.  x2+14x+21 would have a GCF of 7. There is no other number that will go into 14 and 21. The GCF must be able to divide into both factors. x2+36x+60 would have a GCF of 12. We must be careful when determining the GCF to ensure that we have attempted every number possible as to not miss the GCF.

If the expression is prime, is the entire expression written as the GCF?

2:The greatest common factor (GCF) of two or more whole numbers is the largest whole number that divides evenly into each of the numbers. The way that I like to find the GCF is by listing or thinking of all the factors of each number. Then, I list the common factors and pick the largest one. For example,

  • 9 and 12

Factors: 9:1,3,9

            12:1,2,3,4,6,12

GCF: 3                                 Simplified fraction 9/12= 3/4

Being that the GCF is the product of the factors that these numbers have in common, you know that it is a factor of both numbers.

3:The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is the largest number that will divide into the other factors, in the expression. This means there are no larger factors, or numbers, that can divide into the factors of the expression.  x2+14x+21 would have a GCF of 7. There is no other number that will go into 14 and 21. Introduction

International trade can be thought as the exchange of goods and services between countries. Such trade in many countries represents a fundamental share of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

International trade gives rise to a world economy in which demand and supply or prices affect and are affected by the global proceedings (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998). When participating in the international trade, the member countries ought to account for the exports and imports in the county’s current account in the balance of payments so as to determine whether they are making profits or loss from the trade

Los Angeles, as a global city’s current economy overview.

Los Angeles can be termed as an extraordinarily global, but highly disaggregated, metro area. Besides lacking a commanding downtown that is inherent in majority of global cities and its reputation for sprawl, the region’s endless towns and cities merge to make one of the most densely populated urban areas in the United States (Fontagné, 2014)

Los Angeles global reach relates to a great length to its ports, advanced manufacturing and trade, films, investments, and immigration links to the Pacific Rim, which includes Latin America and Asia. Los Angeles is positioned among the most powerful global cities in the United States.

Studies indicate that it leads the country in annual exports which are approximated to be $79.8 based on goods and services that are produced in the metro area. The city is also the leading destination for foreign direct investment particularly from Europe, Canada, and Asia. Research has established that the Los Angeles port is the leading in the United States in terms of Container Volume (Fontagné, 2014).

This port is adjacent to Port of Long Beach that ranks second with reference to container traffic. When these two ports are taken as a single unit, they are ranked among the top five port complexes globally. In the recent A.T. Kearney’s Global Cities Index, Los Angeles was placed sixth and has been a consistent top twenty performer in other major rankings (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998)

Los Angeles is a leader in the fashion industry as well as in biotechnology and health sciences. The residents of Los Angeles of which about thirty-five percent are foreign-born represent a wide variety of cultures (the University of Birmingham. Dept. of Economics, 1996).

South Korea’s Foreign Direct Investment and International Trade in city of Los Angeles

Foreign Direct Investment refers to investment in a business by an investor from another country for which the foreign investors bears control over the organization purchased. Thus, the entities that make direct investments typically have a substantial level of influence and control over the company into which the investment is made (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998). The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) terms control as owning ten percent or more of the business.

South Korea is a significant market for the United States’ medium and small-sized firms that constitute the majority of the United States business exporting to South Korea. Studies by the Migration Policy Institute have indicated that there are over one and a half million Koreans in the United States with over one hundred and sixty residents of Korean origin living in Los Angeles (Fontagné, 2014).

Major strides have been made in promotion of the United States- Korea commercial and trade relations, specifically, the passage of United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Such factors make it favorable for South Korea to participate in international trade with the United States as well as making Foreign Direct Investments in the country particularly in Los Angeles city.

Over the past year, South Korean foreign direct investment to the United States reached $36.1 billion with the South Korea’s tech industry finding a warm reception in Los Angeles. Other foreign direct investments by South Korea in Los Angeles include banking, manufacturing, and wholesale trade sectors (Fontagné, 2014).

Foreign Direct Investment and International Trade of Mexico in city of Los Angeles

In the year 2013, Foreign Direct Investment in the city of Los Angeles by Mexico grew to a record of $35.2 which was more than double the level that was witnessed in the previous year.

Research indicates that the city of Los Angeles hosts the largest number of Mexican-owned and–affiliated organizations including Gigante Cemex and Bimbo Bakeries. Mergers and acquisitions indicate that Mexican investment is principally focused in the United States especially the City of Los Angeles (Fontagné, 2014).

The trends South Korea and Mexico’s economic scale (FDI, Trade) in Los Angeles, and Los Angeles to these two countries.

In the recent years, the overall Foreign Direct Investment in Mexico has been nothing short of mediocre. This is despite the country’s post-hype crises. Foreign Direct Investment in 2014 for Mexico reached $22.6 billion. This may seem as though it is a good figure until it is compared to Foreign Direct Investment of other counties such as Brazil which despite finding itself in the economic doldrums and criticized for its red tape, rigid labor market, high taxes, and protectionist tendencies has managed over $60 billion annually since 2011 (Fontagné, 2014).

Thus, Mexico can only redeem itself by carrying out Foreign Direct Investment in other countries such as it is doing in Los Angeles. Studies have indicated that in the year 2014, the Foreign Direct Investment declined sharply with a thirty-nine percent decline in capital investment and sixteen percent decline in the number of Foreign Direct Investment projects in the Caribbean and Latin America. Mexico has been in the past years been experiencing a negative regarding its economic scales in Los Angeles (Fontagné, 2014).

With regard to the International Trade, Mexico has been experiencing a trade deficit in its transactions with the City of Los Angeles considering that it has been exporting less than it has been importing from Los Angeles ( the University of Birmingham. Dept. of Economics, 1996).

On the other hand, the study revealed that the Asian- Pacific remained the leading destination for the Foreign Direct Investment. The region attracted over thirty-eight percent of all capital investments globally. The study revealed that South Korea had increased its capital investment overseas by one hundred and thirty-nine percent in the year 2014 which translated to $23 billion (Fontagné, 2014)

With South Korea having various businesses in the city of Los Angeles then we can say that as far as the country’s economic scale in Los Angeles is concerned, the country has been having a positive trade with the tech industry being on the lead (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998).

On the other hand, considering that Los Angeles is a global city, the city has had positive trend in both Mexico and South Korea regarding its economic scale in these two counties (Fontagné, 2014).

As it has been indicated before, Los Angeles leads in various industries and thus by conducting Foreign Direct Investment in these two countries, it will have a competitive advantage over the native firms. This may be due to the advancement in technology by entities from Los Angeles. Studies have shown that these entities are growing steadily and thus exhibit a positive trend.

The problem, each of this two country, is facing in Los Angeles’s market and way to overcome.

As earlier stated, when conducting both international trade and Foreign Direct Investment, member countries ought to account for the exports and imports in the county’s current account in the balance of payments (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998). This is so as so to determine whether they are making profits or loss from the trade. Both Mexico and South Korea have seen little foreign interest when it comes to investing in Los Angeles due to market characteristics or competition conditions.

Considering that the United States’ dollar and hence Los Angeles is more stable than the currencies of these two countries, Los Angeles has an advantage as it continues transacting with these two countries since the city and hence the United States enjoys the balance of trade benefits ( the University of Birmingham. Dept. of Economics, 1996).

The trade deficit of these two countries with the United States and hence Los Angeles dictates that the companies or entities of these two countries that are unable to compete with quality goods and services from the local firms lower their prices or risk going out of the business. So as to lower their costs, these companies may start outsourcing jobs. Some of the major problems that are faced by these countries in Los Angeles’s market are discussed below (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998)

Ideology. Typically, basic ideologies play a critical role in the way negotiations are conducted. However, these ideologies differ in various states. Thus, while planning to conduct Foreign Direct Investment in Los Angeles, these two countries should carry out a feasibility study for their intended business ventures so as to determine whether the business people in Los Angeles tend to be more adversarial in their negotiations or whether they rely on consensus-building among other aspects (Fontagné, 2014).

Foreign bureaucracies. There are well-established and accepted ways of doing business in several of countries that may seem dangerous and difficult in another country. Things such as joint ventures and silent partners which are a virtual necessity in making business deals may not only difficult but potentially illegal in another country.

Thus, it is imperative for investors from these two countries to conduct a market research before carrying out Foreign Direct Investment in Los Angeles since this would help them in making major decisions which may aid in evading possible losses (Tharakan, Bulcke, and Plasschaert, 1998).

Negotiating environment. When conducting a business, one cannot avoid some factors such as ranging degree of culture shock. This encompasses almost everything ranging from conflicting business styles to, new food to language variations and consequently, these factors make negotiations to be more difficult. Thus, the foreign investors from these two countries should conduct a market research, determine some of these factors with regard to the citizens of Los Angeles and subsequently strategize on the ways to overcome them (the University of Birmingham. Dept. of Economics, 1996)

Foreign Direct Investment is transforming our commercial activities and societies. Every national business environment consists of unique cultural, political, legal, and economic characteristics. Thus, when undertaking Foreign Direct Investment, the management of the companies from these countries are likely to face all these factors. Thus, the management must be attentive to the nuances and adapt products and practices as required (Fontagné, 2014).

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines is a highly low cost carrier. It gives the clients many options of customizing their base tickets amounts. The company has agent print-outs known as the boarding pass. The boarding pass is used to check the input versus the doing in the online kiosk. The system checks bags and progressively increases charges for overweight bags.  By 2007, the Spirit started charging an amount of $3 for drinks. The charges increased to $5 in 2011 for passengers boarding passes printed at the check-in. According to these company, any bags that can exactly fit under the seats, are not charged. Any big bags that cause the overwhelming condition to the operators are the ones that are charged. The company ensures that the luggage does not exceed 50 pounds, and the bags are loaded up to $25. The company started in the US as a carrier to temporary to increase the passenger baggage fees (Eden, 1996).  In the states, the bag fees began with a minimal fee of $2 to attract fewer bags to the airline during traveling.  The aim of the company in discouraging passengers from carrying huge bags have resulted in another open business.

The company attains a higher competitive advantage over the higher-cost carriers. Its low prices in the market make it maintain its customers. Unlike some other companies such as the Delta Airline, US Airways and many other means of transport enterprises in the US, the stripe line has the least charges thus making many people prefer to use it. The company is also winning the competitive ability by ensuring that its bankruptcy is protected.  The company was recorded to be among the businesses in the US airlines that protected its bankruptcy. By so doing, it established a strong foundation in the market as compared to the other airline which was declared bankrupt in the year 2012

The attractiveness of the Airstrip industry makes customers like it. The leisure travels cost which depends on the service provided by the airstrip increases when the service given by the airline industry are active. The most significant factor that makes the airstrip gain more customers is its effectiveness.

Another external business factors that affect the runway industry is the fuel volatility. A company like a strip airline take proper steps when trying to regulate the fuel prices. The fuel prices can affect the company to extend of deciding to quit the market. For a company to be comfortable in the market, it should be prepared for anything in the fuel market and once the fuel prices Hicks, the company should have its compensation scheme.

Competition

Competition is one of the core external threat that any company can experience. Competition and displacement of business from its niche results from factors such as quality of services provided by a corporation, the level reputation in the market and the company’s strategies for regulating competition. The airstrip company has minimized the competition from the external and new businesses entering the market by ensuring that the services that provide are of exceptional quality. The company is also consistent in the market. Unlike other enterprises that were declared bankruptcy in 2011, airstrip has a technique of protecting its bankruptcy states.

The bargaining of the buyers

Companies that provides the customers a higher bargaining power are likely to experience more sell and more customers. Here, the customer can choose what type of airline to use. In the airstrip industry, the most customers tend to shift from other service providers to the runway production due to a relatively small burgeoning power. The bargaining power should touch all spheres that affect the entire field of airfield transport. It should also change the suppliers such as the fuel providers (Kaplan, & Norton, 2001). If all stack-holders are given opt unities to express their feeling about the prices of the products they are supplying or selling, they will feel comfortable to work with the company in question and thus good customer-seller relation thus an expansion in the business niche.

EFE Analysis

From the external factors analysis and the respective rating, the IFE and EFE matrices quantitatively show that code sharing, implementation of new route are among the techniques that promote the company’s market acquisition. According to QSPM, strategies are presented regarding total relative attractiveness.  For a company to shine in terms strengths, opportunity grip and ability to detect threads, code sharing is the most advantageous and useful technique to use. The cost of code sharing includes sharing, and consolidation of the airstrip resources, the maintained cost, flier program cost, and internal adjustment (Lawrence, & Lorsch, 1986). Research indicates that the least mode of operation is by the little code business model.  The strip airline has reduced its operational cost thus, making it easy for capital financing.

Internal business environment

The airstrip industry started in 1919 in Hounslow Heath Aerodrome in England. It was among the very first airstrips that operated for international commercial services.  During its development, the industry experienced a great deal of issues which included engine break down, regular refuel after the plane has flown for short distances. The problem was later solved by the implementation of the aircraft that would fly over long distance without any need of refueling. Such planes were introduced in the 1960s. The purpose of the air transport that was invented was meant to assist in military work A fact that changed over time and the plane started carrying people and finally become a means of transportation.

The scanning provides relevant information which is used to analysis and give out the most outstanding way to handle any effects that may negatively affect the business (Post, J. E., Frederick, W. C., Lawrence, A. T., & Weber, 1996). Abnormal Psychology

Abnormal psychology is part of psychology that fully deals with abnormal behaviors and psychopathology. The abnormal psychology covers abroad variety of disorders especially those from depression to fascination- compulsion to sexual divergence. There are different perspectives that are normally used by psychiatrists in abnormal psychology. In most cases the mental health professionals use elements from multiple areas so that they may understand and be able to treat psychological disorders. The behavioral approach dealing with the abnormal psychology mostly focuses on observable actions. The behavioral therapy focuses on the reinforcement of positive behaviors and they do not focus on the maladaptive behavior. The proffered approach when dealing with the abnormal psychology constantly focuses on the biological origin of the mental illness (Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). This kind of the perspective mostly emphasizes on the understanding of the fundamental causes of the disorder, which is believed to include genetic inheritance, chemical imbalance, infection and related physical illnesses. The medical treatment is commonly pharmacological in nature but is also often used hand in hand with psychotherapy. According to psychology cognition, prejudice can be described as a state of unfairness or injustice. Cognitive is not part of prejudice because, according to psychology cognitive deals with issues concerning mental practices such as problem solving, memory perception, language use and creative thinking. Therefore one can be discriminated due to his/her behavioral  outstanding ,emotional difference, or due to political background while cognitive is something that cannot be noticed easily of which its somehow hard to bring unfairness or injustice instead, cognitive can be used to solve  the problem of unfairness and injustice. Hindsight bias is a person who predicts something before it takes place. When the event takes place he or she just comes to prove what he or she had detected, therefore that is why the person wasn’t at all surprised. The reasons why people compare them with others is due to; low self –esteem and stereotype threats. Self –esteem is either positive or negative attitude towards oneself that shows ones perspective determines his worth (Barlow & Durand, 2011). A person with a low self esteem is always in need of approval from others due to lack of self confidence. Stereotype threat is a situation where a personnel feel insecure about the company they’re in either the friends or fellow workers.

Scapegoat is somebody who is innocent yet blamed for other people’s faults. when I was young in school I had done my assignment but my friend had not completed hers and she took it without my conscience and she presented it to the teacher and it was so tough on me since the teacher punished me instead. The best strategy to change deeply rooted attitude and behavior is to consider a rational emotive behavior therapy. This is whereby one undergoes emotional, psychologically and behavioral turn around after several processes. Addiction is an intricate illness characterized by intense and uncontrollable craving of something commonly drugs, which is usually accompanied by devastating consequences. At initial stages, individuals take the drugs voluntarily but over time, their ability to stay away from drugs becomes compromised and it forces them to seek, find and consume them. Addiction is a brain disease caused by prolonged exposure of drugs on brain functioning.  It affects a number brain channels, including those involved in memory and learning, reward and motivation and inhibitory control over behaviors. Treatment of drug abuse and addiction is not simple owing to the fact that addiction is diverse and affects many aspects in an individual’s life. This paper is going to address various models that describe effective etiology of addiction. An addicted person should be helped by the treatment to cease drug abuse, maintain a lifestyle that is drug free and be a productive and responsible member of the society (Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). Because addiction is a chronic disease, victims require long-term care to achieve the definitive goal of permanent abstinence and resurgence of their lives.

Combination of medication and behavioral therapy plays a major role in overall addiction treatment process that usually commences with detoxification, followed by treatment and prevention of relapse. The following models describe how the overall addiction treatment process can be conducted to render the victims drug-free lives. The detoxification stage of medications helps in repressing withdrawal symptoms. However, patients who are medically assisted to handle withdrawals and left at that stage often abuse drugs just like those who were never treated (Barlow & Durand, 2011). Medication can be used to help diminish cravings, prevent relapse and restore normal brain functioning.  There are medications for alcohol addiction, opioids, tobacco, stimulants and even cannabis (marijuana). Opioids: Buprenorphine, methadone and, for some patients, naltrexone are effective drugs for opiate addiction treatment. These medications act on the same points in the brain as morphine and heroine and therefore they suppress all withdrawals and stop that strong urge to consume them. The patients are helped by the medications to extricate from drug seeking and related unlawful behavior. There are three medications approved for treatment of alcohol addiction: acamprosate, disulfiram and naltrexone. The latter inhibits opioid receptors that are concerned with effects of alcohol drinking and craving. It minimizes relapse to overindulgence in alcohol and is highly effective in most patients. Disulfiram makes the patient to be uncomfortable with alcohol as it produces distasteful reaction that includes palpitations and nausea if the patient drinks alcohol. Acamprosate serves to minimize withdrawal symptoms such as restlessness, anxiety and insomnia. The patients are assisted by behavioral treatments to modify their behaviors and attitudes related to substance abuse. These treatments also enable patients to stay in treatment for longer periods and thus enhancing the effectiveness of medications. From the research done by  (Barlow & Durand, 2011), ‘Cognitive-behavioral therapy, which helps individuals” under treatment “to recognize, avoid and cope with situations that” can lead to relapse; multi-dimensional family psychoanalysis which addresses various influences of patterns of drug abuse and also seeks to recover overall functioning of the family; motivational incentives which make use  of positive support to encourage abstinence among patients and motivational interviewing which takes advantage of individuals’ willingness to enter treatment and change their behavior. Residential treatment programs can also offer much help especially to very rigorous cases. Therapeutic communities (TCs), for instance, are well established programs in which addiction victims typically remain at a residence for up to 12 months. The principal difference between TCs and other treatment models is that they use community as major agent of change to influence individuals’ perceptions, attitudes and behaviors linked to drug abuse. Patients with long histories of drug abuse can also make use of TCs. They are also tailored to accommodate women who are married and have kids. This model explains the complex relations between the biological, psychological and social facets of addiction. Its ability to explain the intricate nature of addiction has made it very useful by researchers Carson, Butcher & Coleman, 2000). Initially, this model was designed as an option to the existing biomedical model. A few decades later it was articulated byBarlow & Durand (2011), for addictive behaviors in recognition that alcohol and drinking problems are diverse. The author also illustrates that intense assessment that could consider ‘biological, psychological and social” facets of the patient’s life that “are affected by drinking” were recommended. Since then the concept of biopsychosocial model has been expanded to cater for the multi-dimensional pathways to addiction such as learned behavior, impact of one’s family and the need for self-medication’ (Barlow & Durand,  2011).

In conclusion, the above models as described and analyzed by various research practitioners solve issues differently and are of equal importance. In my perspective, the behavioral model relates a lot with my philosophy. The behavioral therapy focuses on the reinforcement of positive behaviors and they do not focus on the maladaptive behavior. In most cases the mental health professionals use elements from multiple areas so that they may understand and be able to treat psychological disorders (Barlow & Durand, 2011). A person with a low self esteem is always in need of approval from others due to lack of self confidence. These treatments also enable patients to stay in treatment for longer periods and thus enhancing the effectiveness of medications.
