The issue that rotary club has is why the club is losing memberships and statistics has been shown in the published literature that loosing membership by following reasons: “Lack of leadership agreement on purposes and goals. Loss of desire and initiative to make the necessary changes. Losing sight of the overall objective and Failure to properly educate and communicate with all involved” (Henry 1). It indicates the listed problems are the major ones that rotary club needs to be solved in order to gain more memberships and maintain the old members. Based on the information study, the connected solutions to those major problems have been indicated.

First of all, the organization needs to be more effective and efficient in cooperation of various instead of just one-person show in order to converse membership failure. The leaders of rotary can form an agreement to gain members’ trust and show them the determination of the leaders that they are able to satisfy their members’ needs and further advancing the purpose of rotary. Second, establish a powerful partnership can make members to have good faith to the organization. But the problem is the club should not omit the time when they are trying to build a partnership. Also new members would think the partnership size will be connected to the club size that larger the partnership can attract new members and keep the old ones. Furthermore, to build an association within a good rational length of time can make members to believe all works are achievable when they worked together to outline the ideas. Third, “success breeds success” (Henry 2). Organization should get more and more people and members involved into proper celebrations with short-term success that make them to keep focus on the vision of club accomplishment. It also can build a timely milestone as motivation.

Nevertheless, communication is one of the most important ways to bind all the members together. Also communication failure may cost many problems that finally makes the club apart because improper ways to communicate with each other would make people loose their trust from other people.  So communicate appropriately, faithfully and correctly are necessary for organizations and clubs to updates to all people involved. In addition, getingt all the obstacles out of the way. Sometimes, problems can motivate people on their path to success, but most of the time are not because nobody likes problems. So organizations should move all the questions and barriers from members that could stop them from being successful. Otherwise, it could costs more people to leave the organization because they don’t feel like getting things done in such organization. Also, when obstacles occurred, leaders of organization will need to make harder decisions. So it is bad for both side, and the best method for it is to move all the problems out of the way. Lastly, never blame on people to accomplish the assignment too soon. All members would have their own goals in the organization. So when they are trying their best to finish the assignment, the organization should celebrate with them instead of complaining the assignment is not done well enough.

All in all, all the information have been listed above are the connected solustions based on the early study.

Based on the results, it showed us that social capital has the most predictive power in explaining intention to participate in voluntary organization.

Social capital is defined as the networks of relationships among people who live and work in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively. Also can be difined as the institutions, relationships, and norms that shape the quality and quantity of a society’s social interactions.

The issue we have been addressing is that why rotary club is losing membership.

Nowadays people are living in busy modern lifes meaning that limited time for volunteer and membership activities after their work and family obligations.

There were used to be many common-interest groups or associations that were formed in pre-internet days, for the main purpose of sharing information that would have been otherwise hard to come by. now that there are a lot of websites and other web sources which offers people a lot of information. people can get those information even if they do not join the associations.

The Rotary club is for the people who owns the business or people who work as a business man or woman who wants to grow their business.

The growth of economies has been downsizing due to many reasons and in order to join the rotary club, the members need to pay the fee in order to be a maintained member. because of the downsizing of the economy people are not attracted to join the clubs anymore.

The reasons are, one, because people do not want to spend the extra money other than essential goods. two, because people can get a lot of informations from a lot of web sources which makes them to think do not need to join the clubs anymore.

Another reason why people do not join the organizations anymore is that people do not have enough time to do much of anything for themselves, so that means they do not have enough time to join the group activities. Many of them now have families of their own with young children, and their lives are basically consumed by their children’s activities, school, sports practice, dance lessons, tutoring, all the while, trying to balance a career and have a social life. if you think about it, it is very hard to find a leisure time and join the organizations.

it is not about lack of interest of joining the clubs but more about lack of time. People would love to be part of the communities, societies, or clubs, but they just do not have enough time to join it.

A lack of awareness of cultural differences or the assumption by one cultural group that another is inferior often results in painful personal and social encounters.  This thesis is applied from the beginning to the very end of the play “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell.  The men and women clearly view and treat the opposite sex in a sarcastic and inferior manner.   Mr. Henderson, the county attorney, shows examples of this quite often.  “Well, women are used to worrying over trifles.”  (Baym, 2013. Pg. 1930) Trifles are an article or thing of little value or importance.  “Ah, loyal to your sex. I see.” (Baym, 2013. Pg. 1930) Mr. Henderson made this snide remark when Mrs. Hale tried to defend Mrs. Wright’s housekeeping.  The men even have too much pride in asking the women to help look for clues in the investigation of Mr. Wright’s death.  If the men in the play did not view women as being inferior they would know that “we all go through the same things- it’s all just a different kind of the same thing”, they could have figured out that Mrs. Wright killed Mr. Wright and what her motive was. (Baym, 2013. Pg. 1935) The women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, found all of the clues in Mr. Wright’s murder.  They found the quilt that started out “nice and even”, then ended up “all over the place.  They found the bird that went with the cage with its neck wrung.  When the county attorney asked about the bird, the women lied and said, “we think the – cat got it.” (Baym, 2013. Pg. 1934) Even with having all the clues to the murder the women still find a way to hide the evidence because of how the men acted towards them.

Your paper must be a statement that can be proven or disproven  using other people’s research.

You do not have time to do your own reasearch such as studies or surveys.

You must use at least 3 published works that are scholary journals or peer reviewed papers.

An example of what I mean is the following:

Incorrect:   “Terrorism”   (you cant find research that proves or disproves this.  its just a topic.  we dont want topic)

Correct:  “Terrorism is Created by Poverty”   (can you prove or disprove this?  yes.  there are studies and papers on this.   find them.   you are allowed to prove your own statement wrong.  you are allowed to have 2 studies say one thing and the other be the opposite.   the point is to find the research and explain it to the reader.)

You can have other sources too that are articles from CNN, Washington Post, NY Times, etc.   But those arent research sources.   those are more filler or statements that fluff the paper to show you are reading stuff about the topic.

USE APA FORMAT!!!!!      Here is how to if you arent sure.   https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/

Forum: “Confession” & “Small Frogs” – Free Verse Poetry Analysis

English 300OL
“Confession” & “Small Frogs” – Free Verse Poetry Analysis

As stated in our How to Analyze Poetry handout, at the turn of the 20th Century, artists demanded more freedom of expression; in a poetic sense, Modern and Contemporary Poets began to structure language as it suited their own needs. Free Verse poetry lacks a traditional system of measure; however, it is not without a certain sense of form and strategy. Poets began to choose line beginnings and endings to create specific meaning and feeling. Stanza breaks could serve as a device to create tension or to create a natural pause. Poets began to build toward the last line — to move us, startle us, give us sudden insight. Subjectivity increased, and by the 1950s and 60s, Beat, Zen, and Confessionalist Poets turned to a style of emotional autobiography, shifting the role of audience from objective observer to personal confidant.

Consider how style and form creates meaning in this week’s free-verse poems “Confession,” & “Small Frogs”— both poems can be found on our How to Analyze Poetry handout.

For this forum, please consider what makes these poems “contemporary.” Are the themes contemporary? The ability for a poet to express these particular feelings and issues? The format of the poems?  You may refer to the Basic Questions for Rhetorical Analysis from our handout to assist you in your analysis.

Please post an initial response of 500 words.  Kindly post a 3-4 sentence response to five (5) of your peers.  Please be specific, thorough, and POSITIVE in your responses. Make sure you write about both poems!!!

Good luck and have fun!

  1. Assignment 1.1: Conflicting Viewpoints Essay – Part I
Due Week 2 and worth 30 points

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist biases toward your own point of view? This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking by playing the “Believing Game.” The Believing Game is about making the effort to “believe” – or at least consider – the reasons for an opposing view on an issue.

You will first read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes: “The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful” at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf.

Part I – Prewriting: Follow the instructions below for this prewriting activity.  Use complete sentences and adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.
    1. Select one (1) of the approved topics from the www.procon.org Website and state your position on the issue.
    2. From the Procon.org Website, identify three (3) premises (reasons) listed under either the Pro or Con section – whichever section opposes your position.
    3. For each of the three (3) premises (reasons) that oppose your position on the issue, answer these “believing” questions suggested by Elbow:

    1. What’s interesting or helpful about this view?
    2. What would I notice if I believed this view?
    3. In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

    • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.

Prepare Icon Prepare: Prior to writing your initial post, read Chapters 1 through 3 of Journey into Literature.

Reflect Icon Reflect: Chapter 1 of our text provides a number of reasons why people choose to explore literature. Clugston (2014) writes that there is “a powerful curiosity about human relationships and how to cope in the world in which we find ourselves” (Section 1.1, para. 2). The text gives a number of general motivations for reading, but it is helpful to put those motivations into context. Consider what your motivations are for reading.

Write Icon Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length, not including references. In your post, answer the following questions:

  • What does literature offer an individual?
  • How has the importance of reading changed from earlier eras (pre-digital/audio/visual media) to our present day? Do you think we read differently now than we did in prior generations?
  • Do you think Clugston’s quote is valid? How have perceptions regarding the value of literature changed, if at all?
  • What causes people’s perceptions regarding the value of literature to change?
  • Incorporate readings found in Chapters 1 through 3 to help illustrate the points you makHello class,

Week 1 Discussion 2 is a tricky question, so go by my note here:

Here is the question:  Why might a writer feel compelled to write about literature?

The writer in question here is YOU.   Why might YOU (a student writer) feel compelled to write ABOUT literature?  This is about what we are doing in this class. We are writing ABOUT literature, commenting and discussion literature that has already been written.  This has to do with being a critic and providing critiques ABOUT literature, which is what we’re learning to do in this class!

The question is NOT about the creation of stories, why writers write stories. This is not the same as saying “why might a creative artist or writer want to write a story?”   That’s a different question.

Be sure to answer the question appropriately.   Good luck.  Non plagiarism.  ENG125Introduction to Literature.

alternate work arrangement

Alternate Work Arrangements

Various alternative work arrangements exist for use in businesses and other types of organizations; included among the options are compressed work weeks, flexible work schedules, telecommuting, and job sharing. This case focuses on alternative work arrangements in general rather than on a particular one exclusively; however, telecommuting does receive additional attention.

The case revolves around the potential advantages and disadvantages that are associated with alternative work arrangements, and the factors that are contributing to an increased use of various alternative work arrangements by employers. With respect to the various advantages and disadvantage that are identified in the case, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives. “Organizations that offer flexible working arrangements are, and will continue to be, employers of choice. ¼ Employees consistently rank flexible schedules high on their list of desired benefits; employers who are reluctant to offer these popular perks will find themselves falling short in the bidding wars for talent.” The case identifies three underlying factors that are driving the movement toward the increased utilization of alternative work arrangements in many different workplaces. These factors are: (a) the needs, desires, and expectations of workers for greater flexibility at work; (b) fuel costs and fuel consumption associated with commuting, and the related carbon footprint impact; and (c) the restrictive impact of the 2008-2009 economic recession on job opportunities.

The case concludes by pointing out that many nations have experimented successfully with various flexible work programs and some countries have enacted legislation promoting alternative work arrangements. It then poses the question: “Will the United States government and American businesses be adequately prepared to meet future economic challenges, at least in part, by embracing the movement toward increasing use of alternative work arrangements?”

Case Study – Alternative Work Arrangements: Possible Solutions for a Plethora of Problems?

Alternative work arrangements, such as compressed work weeks, flexible work schedules, telecommuting, or job sharing, can have positive and negative consequences for employers and employees. In general, alternative work arrangements can generate beneficial outcomes, particularly for employers, such as “increased employee retention, loyalty and morale; higher productivity; improved recruiting of highly qualified workers; decreased employee tardiness and unscheduled absences; and maximum use of facilities and equipment.” On the employees’ side, telecommuting—one type of alternative work arrangement—has favorable effects on perceived autonomy, the resolution of work–family conflicts, job performance, job satisfaction, and the experience of stress. What is more, it does not harm perceived career prospects or the quality of workplace relationships. On the downside, however, are the challenges associated with making these programs work for both employer and employees: handling issues regarding employee training, work monitoring, and performance evaluation; maintaining lines of communication with bosses and coworkers; and changing the attitudes of managers who might be uncomfortable with anything other than traditional working arrangements.

On balance the positives seem to outweigh the negatives. “Organizations that offer flexible working arrangements are, and will continue to be, employers of choice.¼ Employees consistently rank flexible schedules high on their list of desired benefits; employers who are reluctant to offer these popular perks will find themselves falling short in the bidding wars for talent.”

Although alternative work arrangements can be highly beneficial for both employers and employees, we need to ask the question: “What seems to be the underlying factors that are driving the movement toward the increased utilization of alternative work arrangements in many different workplaces?” One factor reflects the needs and desires of workers. “Many people today are seeking flexibility at work. Parents ¼ may want more time for family. Students hope to fit employment into a busy class schedule. And some people look for work after retirement. Whatever their situation, they’re not alone in wanting a job that’s a better match for their lives.”

Younger workers and those nearing retirement age are two particular segments of the workforce that can be meaningfully targeted by employers offering various alternative work arrangements. Younger workers are entering the workforce with different expectations than previous generations of workers. Whereas their parents were work-centric, most members of Generations X and Y give priority to their personal lives; or at the very least they desire to balance their work lives and personal lives. Sharif Khan, vice-president of human resources at Microsoft Canada, says, “Gen X and Gen Y are coming into the workplace with the expectation that they’re going to be treated as individuals, [who] ¼ want to be able to fit their life and their work together comfortably, as opposed to focusing on work and dealing with life after the fact.”

Another important demographic group in the workforce consists of those individuals nearing retirement. “Baby Boomers are reaching retirement age. While many Boomers may choose to stretch their retirement date based on some combination of lifestyle choice and recent market developments, many are opting for less-demanding positions or reduced workloads.” “By 2020, 16 percent of the U.S. population will be age 65 and over, up from 12 percent in 1999. ¼ Yet leaders of many organizations ignore aging workforce issues despite the potential problems they see coming, and some damage seems likely to occur before the issues receive appropriate attention.” “[T]he size of the Baby Boomer demographic group exceeds current graduating classes, and replacing their experience will be a challenge for most firms.”

Increasingly, business and governmental organizations are adopting alternative work arrangements for economic reasons. For example, a May 2008 poll conducted by the Society for Human Resource Management indicated that 18 percent of responding organizations offered telecommuting in order to help employees with rising fuel costs. Four months later, with fuel prices continuing to soar, the percentage of organizations offering the telecommuting option had risen to 40 percent. In October 2008, when gasoline prices were peaking, Ann Bednarz, writing in Network World, reported that “[g]as shortages in the Southeast United States are prompting companies to consider expanding their telework programs so employees can conserve fuel. Other options workers are weighing include greater use of carpools and public transit, along with alternative scheduling arrangements such as four-day work weeks.”

In addition to the dramatic increase in fuel costs in the summer and autumn of 2008, concerns about global warming and long commutes have fostered interest in alternative arrangements. Moreover, two recession-related factors could lead more employees to seek out long-distance telecommuting options for at least part of their time on the job. First, the slow housing market limits people’s ability to move to new jobs. Consequently, rather than physically commuting a long distance for a new job, part-time, long-distance telecommuting could be an option. Second, the weak job market that has been caused by the recession appears to be increasing the number of commuter marriages wherein the spouses work in different cities. Here too, part-time, long-distance telecommuting might be a viable option.

Many nations have experimented successfully with various flexible work programs; and indeed, some countries have enacted laws to make alternative work arrangements more accessible to employees. Although the United States has not enacted such legislation, the demographic and economic changes that are occurring may result in alternative work arrangements laws that “could play an important role in preparing the U.S. economy for the future.”

Will the U.S. government and American businesses be adequately prepared to meet future economic challenges, at least in part, by embracing the movement toward increasing use of alternative work arrangements?

This case was written by Michael K. McCuddy, The Louis S. and Mary L. Morgal Chair of Christian Business Ethics and Professor of Management, College of Business Administration, Valparaiso University.

Response to Discussion posted

I need to respond to this discussion post and have no idea what to say. Please help

The 1930’s saw the beginning of anti-fascist images. Publications swaying to the left, or in support of the Communist ideology portrayed mostly cartoons that forwarded the communist or socialist agenda. This agenda was mainly the “promotion of the rights of workers and their fight against capitalism and fascism (Pohl 441-442). The American Artists’ Congress, a group made up of many artists who represented the far left and socialist movement existed from 1935-1942. At one time, the Congress had approximately 900 artist members. This group was born out of other groups such as the John Reed Clubs. John Reed Clubs were intensely focused on fighting capitalism and were mainly of Socialist party allegiance. With the rise of Adolf Hitler of Germany, Mussolini of Italy and Hirohito of Japan, fascism was on the rise. Joseph Stalin, leader of Russia was now more concerned about fighting fascism than capitalism. As a result, Socialist groups within the United States were shifting their priorities to fall in concert with the preachings of Stalin.

In her book Anti-fascism in American Art, Cecile Whiting notes that “the debate during the 1930’s and 1940’s over the function of images in the fight against fascism was complex.” It was not clear weather artists should even weigh in with their art. Some wondered or suggested if it would be more advantageous to enlist and fight. In addition, if they were going to work, in what style? Should they paint the war itself? Should they paint pro-democracy pieces? Like Whiting said, “it was complex.”

At the same time, Spain was under attack by the fascist Falange Party. This, along with Stalin’s shift, prioritizing the fight against fascism over capitalism influenced many American artists in their composition decisions. Groups like the American Artists’ Congress pushed their members to represent the groups support in their subject matter. They began creating pieces that did exactly that. Fully developed oils paintings were now being done in contrast to the cartoons at the beginning of the era. Solemn portrayals or the depiction of loss were becoming more frequent. Works like a cartoon drawing in New Masses, July 1934 by William Gropper showed the eminent destruction of capitalism and fascism evolved into oil on canvas and screen prints focused on fascism alone. One shining example of this is Harry Sternberg’s Fascism. In my opinion, this piece is a disturbing, yet it is a telling example of the destruction that fascism left in it’s wake.

I think that the imagery of this time period probably served to influence the public, particularly in America to support the fight against fascism. America was extremely individualistic at that time and not as ready as it is today to step into someone elses conflict. Of course we had no other choice to join the fight when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, but prior to that, the government was hesitant. The public perception, based on artist imagery, may have had a resounding effect on our decision as well.
