Literary Analysis Paper

Your task is to write will write a literary analysis of no fewer than 750 words on your chosen given topic.

Choose the topic below that corresponds with the novel you read in the novel study. The introduction should include a clear thesis (not a restatement of the prompt), which should be the claim upon which your essay will be built. Each body paragraph should begin with a strong topic sentence (an assertion), and contain evidence from the novel, as well as your own commentary, which will connect your evidence with the claim. End your essay with a strong conclusion in which you again revisit your thesis statement and give your reader “food for thought”– what didn’t you say in your essay that is relevant to the overall essay and your assertion?

ESSAY PROMPTS

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Review the following themes of the novel:

  1. Parents must take responsibility for their children, and creators must take responsibility for their creations.
  2. Nature is a source of solace and inspiration.
  3. Manipulation of nature has devastating effects.
  4. Excessive pursuit of knowledge or ambition leads to destruction.
  5. Human beings need love and companionship; repeated rejection and alienation leads to antisocial behavior.

Choice #1: Choose one of the above themes, and analyze how Shelley expresses the theme in the novel.

Choice #2: Analyze a key scene from the novel, discussing how this scene in particular advances one of Shelley’s major themes. In the introduction, contextualize the scene (where in the novel it is located, what characters are present). Then have a clear thesis in which you make your assertion about the scene’s importance (to plot, character, and theme).

  • provide a clear and cohesive introduction, body, and conclusion
  • support your main points with evidence from the text
  • explain how the evidence supports your ideas
  • include transitions to link the major sections of the text
  • use language that is appropriate for your audience
    • Do not use 1st or 2nd person—use 3rd person.
    • Use words for numerals when no more than two words are required.  Ex:  ten, four hundred, but 123.
    • Avoid these words:  thing, a lot, nice, very, really.
    • Do not use slang (say father instead of dad).
    • For literary analysis, use present tense when referring to the literature.

Art History (Week 5 Discussion)

Question 1: The Painting of Modern Life

The late nineteenth century is often cited as a critical point in the development of a “modern” art. Impressionists and Post-Impressionists turned to the contemporary world as primary subject matter, and depicted elements of that world using an innovative style.

Carefully examine the following paintings:

  • Monet, Rouen Cathedral: The Portal (In Sun), 1894
  • Manet, Bar at the Folies-Bergère, 1881-82
  • Seurat, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, c. 1884-86

In 3 well-developed paragraphs, address the following questions:

  1. How is the subject of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism?
  2. How are the style and visual characteristics of each painting representative of Impressionism or Post-Impressionism? Be sure to discuss specific elements such as brushwork/application of paint, use of color and light, and composition, in your response.
  3. Describe the specific ways that each painting shows tension between its inherent two-dimensionality and any illusion of three-dimensionality created by the artist.

Question 2:

Modern and Contemporary Art may seem alien to many people— seemingly without content, message, or purpose. But it can be argued that Modern and Contemporary Art visually reflect the complex and abstract ideas that we experience every day. Although not for everyone, art of the 20th and 21st centuries is often a key part of the collection in many art museums. As you consider the wide range of modern and contemporary art types that we studied this week, think of yourself actually visiting a modern art museum. In 2 well-developed paragraphs discuss:

  1. While you are visiting, what type of Modern or Contemporary art will you most want to see and why? Be sure to name the specific style (e.g., Analytic Cubism, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism)
  2. What type will you put last on your list of “things to look for?”
  3. Why do you feel that way?

Be sure to explain your ideas clearly and support them by discussing specific works of art that you have read about this week, talking about how they illustrate and support your ideas. Include the images of these specific works of art in your response.

SWK313 Case Study One:

You are a social worker in a program with in a non-government agency that supports people recovering from addiction. Steve, a 23 year old man presents at your service as he has been has a upcoming Court date for some drug related offences and his lawyer  told him if he attends a course it will prevent him from going to prison.

Steve has a long history of alcohol and marijuana addiction as well as several prior convictions for theft and burglary. Steve has no family support and left home and school when he was 14 after being abused by his alcoholic step father. He is currently living in transitional housing with friends who are also drug users.  Steve has never been able to hold down a job, but picks up occasional work.

Steve agreed to one of one counselling however, during sessions he would often make rude remarks he was angry and bored and would often walk out of sessions.

SWK313 Case Study Two

You are a social worker in a government child protective service and you receive the following report and are allocated to work with the family:

Subject Children:  Stephen (aged 8

                                          Mary (aged 4

Parents         Jeanie (b.mo aged 28)

                                          Tom ( b.fa aged (32)

Address:       Remote community (during Wet season)

                                           Outstation (during Dry season)

Case Manager:      Tess

Current situation:

A notification was received from a remote community health centre notifying that Stephen and Mary will be air lifted to Hospital due to weight loss (each averaging 200 grams per week). B/mo of the children Jeanie is pregnant and is also considered to be severely malnourished so will also be flying in with the children for treatment.  Family will be accompanied by another female family member who notifier describes as ‘responsible’.   Notifier advised that they had applied the World Health Organisation classification for malnourishment to both children and it meets the ‘severe’ category.  Notifier also notes that it is unusual to need to admit a child of eight (8) years of age to hospital for malnourishment.

Notifier stated they have continued to experience difficulties in following-up health issues for the children because family spends large amounts of time at their Outstation and there is no service outreach to this location.  Previous involvement with the family has resulted in two (2) hospitalisations for Stephen and Mary for failure to thrive and each time their weight had increased on their return to community however contact is lost when family moves to the outstation. Notifier added that b/mo Jeanie has disclosed that there is often little to no food available at the Outstation as it runs out quickly.  Jeanie presents as disempowered when discussing family issues with the health centre and her own serious malnourished state supports the view that her nutritional needs take low priority in the family hierarchy.  The health centre has had no direct involvement with the birth father as he never accompanies Jeanie or the children to their service. When the Centre has used a local interpreter to discuss family issues, Jeanie is even less forthcoming with details of her family life. A staff member at the health centre has told notifier that she saw the father driving around the community recently in a new 4-wheel drive.

Respond to 1 of the questions below

Please choose one of the following questions to answer for this unit by Wednesday at 11:59 pm (CST).  You should also respond to two of your classmates’ postings by Sunday at 11:59 pm (CST).

Before answering this unit’s questions, you should read Schmid’s Natural Born Celebrities, “The Victorian Killer as Media Star: Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes,” p. 31.

Keep in mind, as you read the text, a few of the questions posted below.

Questions (Reading)

Choose one questions to answer:

  1. At first glance there is little to connect Joe Goldberg (in our novel this week) and Jack the Ripper, but Schmid portrays the panic and fascination with the Ripper as something that the media created.  On p. 33, Schmid describes the public panic in 1888 when Jack the Ripper stalked and killed his victims as motivated by the media.  Is our fear of Joe the same as a Victorian Londonite’s fear of the Ripper?  Or is our fascination with serial killers dramatically different in the 21st century?  Give specific media examples or points from our novel this week to detail why or why not.
  2. Schmid details the fact that much of our own knowledge of the Ripper is taken from “dime novels” written just after the murders.  These books were excessive, romantic, Gothic depictions of a monster.  Using specific examples from our text this week, show me whether or not You is a “dime novel” reveling in gratuitous description of a murderer or in real life danger.
  3. Much of Schmid’s chapter discusses the ties between Jack the Ripper and nationality, specifically his “Englishness” or his foreignness, depending upon the choice of suspects.  Take a note from Schmid and describe the ways You is an American serial killer novel.  What aspects of our society or national identity appear to be tied with serial killer media in the 21st century or with the consumption of violence overall?

On October 16, 2015, groups in Dr. Tawfik’s Transportation Engineering laboratory were prompted to hypothesize what a company or developer might need to do during the planning process of implementing a Solar Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Fresno, California. The main question that the groups needed to ask themselves was, “What variables will you need to estimate the impact on a transportation system by the PRT project?”

Each of the groups had their own unique ways of interpreting this question. The group that I was a part of wanted to try and identify the variables necessary to evaluate the destination routes, economic evaluation, effects on transportation system, repercussions, and target year. We broke these categories up into two parts. We figured that to make any estimates, we would need to know what kind of data would be needed and a plan on how to collect that data.

The destination route data we would need was population density for various zones in the city, current and future land development, and current location of bus stations. We figured that we could collect said data using census records, speaking with city planners, surveying the population and research current popular bus stations. Group number 5 also had a great idea that pertains to routing decisions. They proposed contacting employers and asking them where their employees lived. This would help them plan for future commuting of employees.

Our group hypothesized that to estimate the economic evaluation we would need to estimate cost of construction per mile, profit, maintenance costs, and efficiency. We figured that a material analysis would be necessary to estimate cost per mile. We could use projected usage rates to estimate profit and to estimate maintenance and efficiency we would contact previous pilot programs and ask them about their current economic data. Group 2 stated that if public approval was not extremely high, we would need to have a long line of investors to fund the project initially.

To estimate the effects on the transportation system, we theorized that we would need quantify the number of people using public transportation currently, what other forms of transportation people are using, and number of people walking or biking for commuting purposes. To collect this information, we could utilize surveys, contact public offices, and again contact previous PRT programs. Group 3 proclaimed that the implementation of this PRT system would reduce traffic on roads therefore reducing maintenance necessary on the roads.

What could possibly be repercussions of this system though? My group argued that we would need to analyze other PRT systems in use so that the repercussions of the system would not be based on pure insight but have defined fact behind it. We thought that surveying the population of cities of whom have PRT systems and see what they thought about the pros and cons. Group 4 believed that there would be a decrease in emissions due to the lower amount of cars in use. This would be a positive repercussion however there would be negative as well. With this system being solar, there would have to be legislation implemented to ensure sunlight exposure to the power cells. This could have a negative repercussion on new infrastructure because there would be a limit to how tall a building could be.

My group believed that this project would be a “medium” time span project meaning that it would take 10 to 15 years from the first days of planning to the final days of construction.

Evaluating Sources

The intention of this assignment is to help you understand what sources are typically considered appropriate to use for academic research papers. This assignment will also help you develop the skills needed to evaluate sources for use in academic research. You will likely come across many different types of sources during the course of your research for your Final Research Paper, including various websites, e-books, scholarly articles, news stories, magazine articles, etc. Not all sources you come across are suitable to use in college-level research papers. How do you know what sources are acceptable?

First, watch the ANT101 Evaluating Sources tutorial. This tutorial covers concepts such as

  • How to evaluate sources to determine appropriateness for inclusion in an academic research paper using the CRAAP (credibility, reliability, authority, accuracy, purpose) method.
  • The different types of sources there are, the scope of information they usually cover, and their uses.
  • Efficient ways to read scholarly sources.

This tutorial is interactive and you will be required to complete short exercises throughout it. It should take 8 to12 minutes to complete. After completing the “ANT101 Evaluating Sources” tutorial, you will earn a certificate that will be displayed on the last slide. You will need to save a copy of the certificate by taking a screenshot or by saving or printing the certificate as a PDF and uploading it to the classroom.

To submit this certificate, save the screenshot or PDF to your computer in a location you can easily find. Click the “Assignment Submission” button within the assignment instructions in the online classroom. Upload and attach the screenshot or PDF certificate file that you have saved in your computer to your assignment submission.

Late Policy: Written assignments (essays, journals, presentations) are due on the specified days in the course. Written assignments will be subject to a late penalty of up to 10% per day up to three days late. If written assignments are submitted after 72 hours past the due date, instructors can give a penalty up to and including a grade of 0 for the assignment.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
