I think the fact decision making principle can improve by having actual surveys go out to the customer’s, I think the best way a business can improve and learn from their mistakes is by analyzing actual feedback form their consumers. These surveys can be through email, paper or a quick postcard, any little bit of information helps the business grow and give their customers what they want.

CASE
Debbie’s Dilemma

Debbie Vestica decided to look for a new job on a day that should have been filled with joy. She had just completed a master’s degreein nursing and had been given a substantial increase in pay, along with new benefits. Other factors, however, greatly diminished thereward she had just received.

Debbie began working as a nurse in a local pediatric physician’s medical group. Three doctors and three nurses made up the medicalstaff. Two of the nurses completed training at the licensed practical nurse (LPN) level, while Debbie held the rank of registered nurse(RN). Due to this difference in educational attainment, Debbie was expected to supervise the other two nurses. The problem she facedwas that the two nurses often treated her more as a peer, or even as a subordinate, rather than as a supervisor.

To complicate matters, the two LPNs had been on staff for four and five years, respectively, while Debbie had only been employed bythe organization for two years. Still, when hired, she was told to assume a supervisory role. At first, Debbie chose not to confront thetwo more experienced nurses, hoping that over time she would be able to manage them more effectively by not trying to use forcefulor directive tactics.

One year later, Debbie discovered that although her pay was slightly above average for RNs in the area, her pay differential with theLPNs was only $3 per hour. She earned $30 per hour ($60,000 per year), whereas the LPNs earned $27 per hour ($54,000 per year).Their pay ranked them above nearly all LPNs in the state. Given the additional duties she was expected to complete, Debbie found thepay differential to be unsatisfactory.

After two years on the job, Debbie began a master’s program designed to achieve the designation of clinical nurse specialist with anemphasis in children’s health. She devoted considerable time and money to obtaining the degree, although the physician’s group didcontribute 50% of her tuition and book costs.

On graduation day, Debbie met with the three physicians. They all generously praised her efforts and promised her a new status levelthat included having her own office in the complex. They also granted her a raise of $7 per hour, raising her annual salary to $74,000, inreturn for additional duties and responsibilities.

The turning point occurred when Debbie overheard the two LPNs talking in the office break room. Upon finding out about Debbie’s newpay raise and status, the LPNs confronted the three physicians, demanding an additional increase in pay as well. Sensing a majorconfrontation, the physicians had decided to raise the pay of the two by $5 per hour, to $32 per hour or $64,000 per year. That amountwas higher than what Debbie had earned as an RN and as an RN attending graduate school. Believing that she would never receive theproper pay differential that she deserved in this practice, Debbie decided it was time to seek employment elsewhere.

STRATEGY & POLICY

Hi,

Please find below the article and questions to answer :

3.1 Social Responsibilities of Strategic Decision Makers

Should strategic decision makers be responsible only to shareholders, or do they have broader responsibilities? The concept of social responsibility proposes that a private corporation has responsibilities to society that extend beyond making a profit. Strategic decisions often affect more than just the corporation. A decision to retrench by closing some plants and discontinuing product lines, for example, affects not only the firm’s workforce but also the communities where the plants are located and the customers with no other source for the discontinued product.

Such situations raise questions of the appropriateness of certain missions, objectives, and strategies of business corporations. Managers must be able to deal with these conflicting interests in an ethical manner to formulate a viable strategic plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A BUSINESS FIRM

What are the responsibilities of a business firm and how many of them must be fulfilled?

Milton Friedman and Archie Carroll offer two contrasting views of the responsibilities of business firms to society.

Friedman’s Traditional View of Business Responsibility

Urging a return to a laissez-faire worldwide economy with a minimum of government regulation,

Milton Friedman argues against the concept of social responsibility. A business person who acts “responsibly” by cutting the price of the firm’s product to prevent inflation, or by making expenditures to reduce pollution, or by hiring the hard-core unemployed, according to Friedman, is spending the shareholder’s money for a general social interest. Even if the businessperson has shareholder permission or encouragement to do so, he or she is still acting from motives other than economic and may, in the long run, harm the very society the firm is trying to help. By taking on the burden of these social costs, the business becomes less efficient— either prices go up to pay for the increased costs or investment in new activities and research is postponed. These results negatively affect—perhaps fatally—the long-term efficiency of a business. Friedman thus referred to the social responsibility of business as a “fundamentally subversive doctrine” and stated that:

There is one and only one social responsibility of business—to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud.2

Following Friedman’s reasoning, the management of General Mills was clearly guilty of misusing corporate assets and negatively affecting shareholder wealth. The millions spent in social services could have been invested in new product development or given back as dividends to the shareholders. Instead of General Mills’ management acting on its own, shareholders could have decided which charities to support.

Carroll’s Four Responsibilities of Business

Friedman’s contention that the primary goal of business is profit maximization is only one side of an ongoing debate regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR). According to William J.

Byron, Distinguished Professor of Ethics at Georgetown University and past-President of

Catholic University of America, profits are merely a means to an end, not an end in itself. Just as a person needs food to survive and grow, so does a business corporation need profits to survive and grow. “Maximizing profits is like maximizing food.” Thus, contends Byron, maximization of profits cannot be the primary obligation of business.

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 400–600 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

In the past decade, the human resources (HR) function gained strategic positioning within organizations as the need for professional competencies in managing human talent became recognized. Within the field of HR, disciplines, also called specialties, provide critical skills to the organization. These disciplines or specialties include training and development, recruiting, compensation, benefits, labor relations, employee and organizational development, and so forth.

For this assignment, you will need to identify an HR discipline that interests you or closely aligns with your current or future career goals. For example, you may already be working in training and development, that discipline may align with your future career goals, or you may be in management and want to learn more about the recruiting process because you are involved with hiring new candidates. After you have identified your HR discipline of interest, you will need to explore and describe your chosen discipline in your Discussion Board response.

To learn more about where to explore and research your chosen discipline, watch this tutorial.

Now that you have watched the tutorial, you should have a better idea about how to research career fields within HR that are of interest to you. Below you will find links (some require a paid membership, which is not a class requirement) that will further define the parameters of certain HR specialties. The following links are optional; however, they are excellent resources, so consider using them to help answer the course questions:

Now that you have learned more about your chosen discipline, respond to the following set of questions that best applies to you. You only need to respond to 1 set of questions, as follows:

  • Currently Working in Your Chosen Discipline
    • What is one new thing that you learned by researching this area?
    • Describe what you do at your current position that matches the information that you found?
    • What is something that you do at your current position that you did not discover during your research that you feel would be beneficial to share with your classmates?
  • Chosen Discipline is Your Future Career Goal
    • What did you learn from your exploration that you did not know before?
    • After your research, is this still an area that interests you? Why or why not?
    • After learning more about this field, do you feel that you have the skills and experience that are required for this field? Why or why not?
  • Currently Working in a Field Outside of HR or Planning to Pursue a Field Outside of HR
    • What did you discover from your exploration?
    • Has learning about this discipline changed how you view your current or future career? Why or why not?
    • What is something that you learned from your exploration that can be applied to your current or future career?

1. Economic Dynamics of Health Care Delivery Models

After reading Chapter 7 and the required resources for this week, consider the following scenario:

HIV Help-Inc., a non-profit organization focusing on the prevention of HIV/AIDS just received a $10 million grant to fund several projects.  The organization is currently located in an older building that needs extensive repairs. The organization is using outdated office equipment In addition, one additional staff member is needed in order to keep up with incoming phone calls and requests for presentations and community outreach activities. A portion of the grant – $2 million – is allotted for business improvements which can address one of these three areas: repairs to building, outdated office equipment, and more staff. The remaining $8 million is to be used to further enhance the continuum of care level to provide access to preventive health services.

  • Section A: Create a cost benefit analysis for an update that will improve the business: structural, office equipment, or staff. You can be creative in determining what the business needs.  The cost will use the full amount of funds allotted to this improvement ($2 Million), so you can only improve one of these three needs.

  • Section B: Create a cost effective analysis to determine how to best spend the $8 million portion of the grant funding on education and other preventive services.

The organization currently serves the community and clientele with community education classes at schools and community centers, as well as the distribution of condoms and educational materials. They wish to expand their current services to reach the neighboring community (4,000 residents), add social media advertising and messaging to reach the younger population, distribute educational material and condoms to homeless shelters in the area, and add HIV testing to at-risk individuals. Select two of the potential services and determine how the money can be best spent to have the greatest outcome for the HIV+ population in the community.

  • Based on the CDC website, analyze how cultural norms impact the risk of getting HIV.  Explain one method or action on how to address this challenge.

Your initial contribution should be 250 to 300 words in length. Use proper APA formatting for in-text citations and references as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ posts.  Provide a substantive response (minimum of 100 words) to at least two of your peers. Imagine you are a client or resident within one of the communities served by this organization. Do you feel the grant funding has been spent wisely based on your peers’ selections for services and outcome of calculations? Make recommendations on at least one other service that could be included should the original option identified in your peer’s post be impossible to fulfill.

Part 1 of 2 – Part 1

This part of the question is based on the following information.

The Schmedley Discount Department Store has approximately 300 customers shopping in its store between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. on Saturdays. In deciding how many cash registers to keep open each Saturday, Schmedley’s manager considers two factors: customer waiting time (and the associated waiting cost) and the service costs of employing additional checkout clerks. Checkout clerks are paid an average of $8 per hour. When only one is on duty, the waiting time per customer is about 10 minutes (or hour); when two clerks are on duty, the average checkout time is 6 minutes per person; 4 minutes when three clerks are working; and 3 minutes when four clerks are on duty.

Schmedley’s management has conducted customer satisfaction surveys and has been able to estimate that the store suffers approximately $10 in lost sales and goodwill for every hour of customer time spent waiting in checkout lines.

Please fill out the following table to answer the quiz questions in Part 1. (You may also download the attached worksheet.)

Part 2 of 2 – Part 2

This part of the question is based on the following information.

The wheat harvesting season in the American Midwest is short, and most farmers deliver their truckloads of wheat to a giant central storage bin within a two-week span. Because of this, wheat-filled trucks waiting to unload and return to the fields have been known to back up for a block at the receiving bin. The central bin is owned cooperatively, and it is to every farmer’s benefit to make the unloading/storage process as efficient as possible. The cost of grain deterioration caused by unloading delays, the cost of truck rental, and idle driver time are significant concerns to the cooperative members. Although farmers have difficulty quantifying crop damage, it is easy to assign a waiting and unloading cost for truck and driver of $18 per hour. The storage bin is open and operated 16 hours per day, 7 days per week, during the harvest season and is capable of unloading 35 trucks per hour according to an exponential distribution. Full trucks arrive all day long (during the hours the bin is open) at a rate of about 30 per hour, following a Poisson pattern.

The cooperative, as mentioned, uses the storage bin only two weeks per year. Farmers estimate that enlarging the bin would cut unloading costs by 50% next year. It will cost $9,000 to do so during the off season.
