Reflect: As the textbook author asserts, the Framers intentionally designed a process for selecting presidents that would minimize the president’s political power – the Electoral College. They hoped this institution would insulate the chief executive from the public because they feared the power of presidents who might be elected by the people. However, the Electoral College has also spawned a long ongoing debate about whether the Electoral College should be abandoned in favor of new methods, which would ensure that the candidate elected has the most popular votes. The controversy over the Electoral College must be understood in order to better understand how and why U.S. presidents are elected. After you have read and studied the Electoral College process, you will critically think about the process and share your insights as you write your discussion.

First, all students should summarize how the Electoral College functions.Second, each student will focus on a specific argument regarding the Electoral College, based on the first letter of their last name.

If your last name starts with A-K: Explain the positive impact of the Electoral College and defend why the Electoral College should remain as it is currently. Be sure to include both the pros and the cons of keeping the Electoral College as it is currently.

Discussion Forum Instructions and Guidelines

Instructions for writing your post

1.  Review all of the resources that have been posted for the section.

2.  Post your writing by the deadline.

Word count:  Minimum of 350 for original post

3.  Post your response to TWO classmates by the deadline.

     Word count:  50 – 75 each response

[Note:  You can access a very helpful grading rubric by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of the Discussion Forum page.  The rubric breaks the assignment down into points possible for each section.]

Guidelines for formatting your post

You do not need to use a formal essay format.  However, you DO need to do the following:

1. Use your best writing skills:  complete sentences, appropriate punctuation, etc.  Proofread before posting!!

2.  Break up your writing into paragraphs to make it easier for others to read – especially me!  🙂

3.  Include a couple of well-chosen quotes from the resources to support your writing. However, do not overload your writing with quotes!

[Note:  NO works cited page is necessary, but please give me a one or two word clue as to which resource you are quoting.  Example:  (Human Journey) or (Frontline; then the first two words of the title of the article.  Example:  (Frontline: Jesus Was)].

4.  Be specific with your writing!  Don’t use generalizations like “Jesus was a great guy.”  “He was born in Bethlehem.”  “His mom’s name was Mary.”  Get right to the writing prompt right away.

5.  In your responses to classmates:  Don’t just simply agree with everything they say.  Ask questions, add something more to their ideas, or (respectfully) explain how your ideas are different than theirs.

Writing prompt:

Please summarize your understanding and your feelings about the interpretations contained in the video called “The Lost Gospel of Thomas: Unknown Teachings of Yeshua” (listed as #3 on our list of resources for this section).  The teachings in the “secret” gospels can be very difficult to understand (as you will see when you read through them in your textbook), but this video explains a bit more clearly what these teachings might be saying.  (Hint:  It will greatly improve your ability to understand the video and your overall understanding of these kinds of teachings if you go through the other resources before watching the video.)

NOTE:  It will not help your grade in the slightest if you simply reject the gospels not contained in the Bible based on your beliefs.  If you wish to reject them, that is absolutely fine, but you must do it based on information found in the scholarly resources.  Remember that Jesus said in all four New Testament Gospels that he gave secret teachings to his followers, and these gnostic gospels have been authenticated to the time and place of his early followers.  While the orthodox church did not approve of these texts – based on the church’s own understanding and agenda – many of Jesus’ followers found them to be very meaningful and closer to their own understanding of his teachings.

As always, please include direct quotes and/or references to the video if you wish to receive a higher grade.

Assignment 1.2: Industrialization After the Civil War Final Paper

Due Week 5 and worth 120 points

After the Civil War, the United States became a much more industrialized society. Between 1865 and 1920, industrialization improved American life in many ways. However, industrialization also created problems for American society. Consider events that took place after the Civil War and discuss ways that industrialization affected the U.S. between 1865 and 1920.

You have already developed a thesis statement and developed an outline in which you identify three main points relevant to your topic. Now you will develop the final paper in which you explore your main points in detail.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

  1. Introduce your paper with your previously crafted thesis statement.
  2. Discuss three (3) major aspects of industrialization between 1865 and 1920.  In your response, consider society, the economy, and politics.
  3. Identify three (3) specific groups that were affected by industrialization and provide two examples for each group describing how the group was affected. (Consider issues such as race, ethnicity, gender, child labor, etc.)
  4. Summarize how industrialization affected the life of the average working American during this period. Use specific examples and details.
  5. Use at least three (3) academic references besides or in addition to the textbook. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA style or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Identify and discuss the different ways that the heritage of slavery, the Civil War, the Reconstruction, and segregation have shaped America’s history.
  • Summarize and discuss the ways that formal policies of government have influenced the direction of historical and social development in the United States.
  • Recognize the major turning points in American history since the Civil War.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in contemporary U.S. history.
  • Write clearly and concisely about contemporary U.S. history using proper writing mechanics.

  • PROFESSOR COMMENTS
  • Your thesis statement needs to be more specific.

Assignment 2: Project Paper=

The Project Paper focuses on a suggested topic related to art, architecture, history, music, or literature. The project will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities to be the creative, innovative, and critical thinker you already are!

Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that responds to each of the items described in the topic.

For the topic you choose:

  1. Support your ideas with specific, illustrative examples. If there are questions or points associated with your chosen topic, be sure to answer all of the listed questions and address all of the items in that topic. If your topic asks you to do several things related to the topic, be sure to do each of the things listed.
  2. While some of the topics tend to lend themselves toward particular writing genres, you are not restricted to the specific format suggested for the individual topic. For example, you may do an “interview,” a “proposal,” a “letter,” a “short story,” a “blog,” an “essay,” an “article,” or any other written genre for almost any of the topics. The project is intended to be fun as well as informative, so feel free to be creative with the delivery of your information.
  3. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.
NoteWikipedia and other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.

Note:  Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.

Topic choices (pick 1):

  • Office Art MemoMemorandum. Your boss, who knows you have been taking a humanities class since he pays for your tuition reimbursement, has tasked you with managing the art budget for your company, expecting you to choose various pieces of art for the new corporate offices.  (Note: Replicas of the works are acceptable since they are more cost-efficient and you are working on a budget.)  Include the following:
    1. Identify three (3) examples of 19th century Impressionist painting or sculpture and three (3) Post-Impressionist works. Explain how the six (6) pieces of art fall into these two (2) styles.
    2. In a memo, describe the appearance of your six (6) choices to your CEO so he or she will know what the art looks like and where it would be placed in the corporate offices.
    3. Explain why each piece is considered to be historically significant.
    4. Explain how each piece “fits” your company’s overall (or desired) corporate image. Keep in mind that a piece of art is supposed to “say” something about the owner, so describe what would these pieces of art say about your company.
  • New CompositionSpeech. Your uncle’s birthday is in two (2) months, and everyone knows that he loves almost all kinds of music. As a birthday gift for him, you want to have a special piece of music composed in his honor which will be played at a family birthday celebration. Write a speech that you will make to the composer’s agent. Include the following:
    1. Narrow your choices down to three (3) composers you’ve studied in this course. Choose one (1) of the composers and explain why you want him to write the “birthday present” music.
    2. Explain why the other two (2) composers were ultimately not selected.
    3. Specifically identify the musical elements in the composer’s style that you would like to be included in the new music written for your uncle.
    4. Describe what sort of emotion is generated by listening to the works of your selected composer; in other words, what do you want your uncle to “feel” as he hears the music, and why is this composer so perfect for this composition?
  • Harlem Renaissance Poets. Essay & Poem. Choose two (2) poems by different authors from the Harlem Renaissance. Write an essay that:
    1. Describes each author’s role and importance within the Harlem Renaissance.
    2. Identify the elements in each of their poems in which you see evidence of the “double-consciousness” being expressed by each author.
    3. Fully describe at least two (2) primary themes you see in the poetry written during this time period, referring to specific lines in each of the poems.
    4. Write your own poem that expresses these identified themes of the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Women’s Roles Then & Now.Script. Script a conversation between two (2) notable women from the 18th and / or 19th century on the roles women should play in society. Within the dialogue, include:
    1. Biographical information for each woman.
    2. The historical status for women in general during the time period in which each woman lived.
    3. What opinions each of the women might have on the role the women should play in society during their lifetimes.
    4. What each of the women might think about women’s current roles.
  • Other topic choice recommended and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.

The Project Paper will be graded on:

  • The level to which the instructions were followed.
  • The extent to which all four (4) parts in the topic were addressed.
  • The adequacy of information, examples, and details which support the general claim or main  idea.
  • The clarity and relevance of the explanations and descriptions.
  • Adherence to standard rules of grammar, punctuation, and mechanics.
  • The inclusion of three (3) required references (two [2] additional sources besides your textbook) documented using APA style.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions specific to the selected topic. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the course shell for reference.)
  • Include a cover page containing the tile of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Explain how key social, cultural, and artistic contributions contribute to historical changes.
  • Explain the importance of situating a society’s cultural and artistic expressions within a historical context.
  • Examine the influences of intellectual, religious, political, and socio-economic forces on social, cultural, and artistic expressions.
  • Identify major historical developments in world cultures from the Renaissance to the contemporary period.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in the study of world cultures.
  • Write clearly and concisely about world cultures using proper writing mechanics.

Help with History Essay

Essay: African American Women Leaders between 1877 and 1940Write at least 300 words in an essay format and post by Sunday, 11:55 p.m. ET. At least 2 responses of at least 200 words each by Sunday, 11:55 p.m. ET.https://edge.apus.edu/messageforums-tool/images/collapse.gif?sakai.tool.placement.id=1867d1d4-ece1-48d4-bfe4-6adc73374b8dView Full Description

African American women are rarely recognized as leaders so we want to bring these women back into history. Select one leader to write on, but since there are so few, it is quite possible that some of you may choose the same person. The focus of this forum is the period between Reconstruction and World War II. You must use at least one source from the APUS library or the course bibliography. You may also search online, but if you do, you must justify the academic quality of the website. In other words, you must use the information below and write a paragraph (not as part of the essay) on how you know your website is legitimate. As with all scholarly work, you should not use the textbook or encyclopedias.

The CRAAP test will help you learn what an academic source is:

  • Currency: How old is it? Is it up-to-date? Or is it a primary source document?
  • Reliability and Relevance: What is the source of the information? Is it relevant to your topic? Who published it? Is it peer-reviewed? Is there a bias?
  • Authority: Who is the author? What are their credentials? What is their field of expertise?
  • Purpose or Point-of-View: What is the author’s intention? Who is it written for (which audience)? Is this a primary source or secondary document? Is it a tertiary document (not allowed)?

For online sources, you must ask additional questions. What is the domain (.edu)? Who publishes the site, or sponsors it? Is it recent (has it been updated)? Are there advertisements or signs that it is a poorly designed website with all kinds of distractions? Is the site supposed to be an academic, or is it someone’s pet project?

Remember that this is a formal essay of at least 300 words and you need an introduction (with a thesis statement), body, and conclusion. You are required to respond to at least two of your peers. Those responses must be a minimum of 200 words each.  You must cite and use at least one academic source. Because students must respond, please post your letter as soon as possible.

This case has to do whether the power to create policy on a particular issue should be in the hands of the Federal Government, left to the States, or left in the hands of individual citizens.

Then, you must support your argument to the Supreme Court by finding and using an applicable part of the United States Constitution.

Select one of the following starters to start your argument (only do one):

Hadith Paragraph Assignment

The Kaaba is located in the al-Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca–the mosque was built much later.  There is much uncertainty surrounding the actual age and original construction of the structure, but it clearly is a pre-Islamic building in the form of a cube and made out of granite from the surrounding area.  According to Islamic tradition, the Kaaba was built by Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael.  Also according to tradition the Black Stone housed in the Kaaba dates to the time of Adam and Eve when it fell to the earth (dazzling white in color, later turned black from the sins of the world), but the stone/meteorite also predates the establishment of Islam in Mecca.  When Muhammad conquered the city in 630, he destroyed the idols around and the pictures within the Kaaba and remade it as an Islamic house of worship–the object of the pilgrimage, the Hajj.
The Kaaba is almost always pictured draped by the Kiswah (black cover), which, since the thirteen century, has been made in Egypt every year and then carried to Mecca by pilgrims on the Hajj.  The cloth is embroidered in gold with the profession of faith (the Shahadah).  The previous year’s cloth is then cut up and distributed.  Photo credit ZAK! Read the Hadith selections (along with the document background information and study questions) and answer the following question in a paragraph:

Citing specific evidence from the Hadith (not from the textbook), did this excerpt from the Hadith describe a religion that required an individual to follow a code of moral behavior?

Your paragraph should be about one-half page in length, double-spaced with one-inch margins, font size 10 or 12; it should contain a concise topic sentence (sentence 1) that directly responds to the assigned question (no need to define terms or cite a dictionary), and you should use direct, quoted material to support your points.  Your last sentence should be a conclusion.

WEEK 4 DISCUSSION -“Defining “Classical”;

“Defining “Classical”; Visual or Literal Early Abolitionist Art and Literature” Please respond to one (1)of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:

  •  Listen to one (1) composition (for a symphony) by Haydn or Mozart, either at the Websites below or in this week’s Music Folder. Identify the work that you have chosen, and describe the way in which the composition expresses the specific qualities of the Classical music style: Use the key terms from the textbook that are related to that particular music style, and explain what you like or admire about the work. Compare it to a specific modern musical work for which you might use the term “classic” or “classical”
  • Compare Neoclassicism and Rococo as styles and sensibilities. What do their differences reflect about patronage, popular taste, and historical change?  And how can you relate either style to today’s popular taste (or not)?
  • The United States’ Declaration of Independence, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, is one of the most influential documents in modern history, helping to inspire mass movements and revolutionary upheavals in America and abroad. Analyze the Declaration as a literary work.  What does Jefferson’s diction suggest about the American Revolution as a product of the Enlightenment? What does it suggest about how “revolutionary” the American Revolution was then?  And how can you relate it to today?
  • Explain whether you think an autobiographical or fictional account by a slave such as Phillis Wheatley and Olaudah Equiano, is more persuasive than a biographical or fictional account by a white author such as John Gabriel Stedman or Aphra Behn. In your explanations, use specific examples and consider both audience and the content and nature of the work. Identify a literary form example in modern times that you think is most effective at depicting injustice and why.
  • Explain whether you believe the representations of slavery in the visual arts such as William Blake’s illustrations, William Hackwood’s cameo, or John Singleton Copley’s painting were more compelling and convincing of the injustices of slavery than the literary representations already mentioned above. In your explanations, use specific examples and consider both audience and the content and nature of the work.  Identify an art form example in modern times that you think is most effective at depicting injustice and why.

The Birth of Islam

In Unit 5, we will focus on the rise of Islam and the development of an Arab-Islamic Empire. We will explore the life of Mohammed as well as the religion he founded, Islam, whose religious ideals and ideas are outlined in the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an. As a result of conquest and expansion, Islam quickly spread across the globe, from the Middle East through North Africa and into Spain. Exploiting the weaknesses of the Persian and Byzantine Empires and growing wealth from international trade routes, the early Islamic Empire flourished.

The Islamic Empire was a theocracy ruled by a series of caliphs, originally centered in Damascus and then Baghdad. During the Abbasid Dynasty (750 – 1258 CE), Islamic culture flourished and fueled not only Arab scholarship, but the revival of ancient Greek and Roman texts. As the Islamic Empire grew, it came into increasing conflict with other groups, including Christian Europe and invading Mongol armies from the Eurasian steppes. In 1258 CE, a grandson of Genghis Khan, the founder of the Mongol empire, destroyed Baghdad, ending a golden age in Arab-Islamic history.

From the thirteenth century, the center of a new Islamic Empire, governed by the Ottoman Turks, developed in Anatolia (modern Turkey). At its height, the Ottoman Empire not only conquered the last Byzantine territories, including Constantinople itself, renaming the city Istanbul, but extended their rule throughout North Africa, the Middle East, and southeastern Europe. The Ottoman Empire would remain a formidable force in history until the early twentieth century. As we seek to understand the historical context of the Islamic religion, it is also important to understand how the religion has influenced political and social development, and how the Islamic society itself has evolved over time.

By the end of this unit, you will be able to:

1. Describe the origins of Islam and the development of a new Islamic society, including the difference between the Sunni and Shi’ite sects.

2. Explore the expansion and spread of Islam, including the early Arab conquest, Turkish and Mongol invasions, and Islamic influence in Africa, India, Central and Southeast Asia.

Topic 1

Unit Topic 1 – The Rise of Islam

In the deserts of Arabia a new religion was born in the seventh century CE. Led by a prophet named Mohammed, Islam emphasizes submission to Allah and the practice of the five pillars of the religion: to confess faith, to pray, to fast, to be charitable, and to make a pilgrimage.
