Health Policy Paper: (domestic Violence)

Health Policy Paper:   (domestic Violence)

  Due date : 12/01/2016

Health policy unfolds daily and drives clinical practice in the US. The student will investigate current policies or legislation underway for a specific health-related issue. The Student will develop a scholarly APA formatted paper supported by evidence. The policy paper rubric:

Introduction to population or problem (incidence, prevalence, epidemiology , cost burden etc)

Description of how the policy is intended for a specific population, program or organization

Specific legislators involved in the policy development and dissemination

Identify the role of the APRN in assisting with the policy or refuting the policy – this requires the evidence to support opinion, ideas and/or concepts.

Discuss how the policy influences clinical practice and is used to promote best outcomes

Examine how the policy can be used by the interprofessional team to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care for the specific population

Conclusion – summarize findings

APA format – use of primary peer-reviewed references as much as possible

As you begin to work on the possible policy change: the following ideas and steps should be considered:

  • Definition and description of the issue
  • Exploration of the background of the issue
  • Stakeholders
  • Issue statement or statement of clarity
  • Possible methods of addressing the issue
  • Goals and options for changes
  • Risks and benefits of the changes
  • Evaluation methodology
  • Recommendation or solution

Re:Topic 2 DQ 1

Social determinants of Health are conditions in the places where people live, learn, work and play that affect a wide range of health risks and outcomes. (Center for Disease control (CDC), 2016).

Examples of social determinants are; availability of clean water and food resources, access to health care, language literacy, economic stability through jobs and education, exposure to crime and violence, cultural variety and social attitudes. (Healthy People, 2020). These factors, determine the well-being of individuals and their ability to prevent disease and promote healthy living.

Social determinants of health are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources throughout local communities, nations and the world. When there is more of the social factors that contribute to poor health such as exposure to crime and violence or reduction of the social factors contributing to good health in the community that is, limited access to clean water and food, poor access to health care etc. in the community, members of the community will be at great risk for illness.

Communicable disease chain demonstrates how a communicable disease is linked together by links of chain with each link representing a concept such as the agent, reservoir, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry and susceptible host.

Nurses can interrupt this infectious chain through educational awareness and prevention through vaccinations. (Healthy people, 2020). An example of communicable disease is influenza which is transmitted through droplets in the air and hand to mouth contact. This is easily transmitted in environments with poor ventilation.

To control communicable disease, a nurse should aim at the weakest link to break the communicable disease chain. Example, antibiotics would break the agent link with a strep throat infection and stop the disease before it spreads to someone else. A nurse should ensure patients take their prescribed antibiotics. Also, the importance of proper hand washing cannot be over-emphasized. A nurse that does not practice proper hand washing could become a mode of transmitting infectious agents during care of patients. It is required/expected of nurses to engage diligently in infection control measures such as hand-washing and proper use of personal protective equipment such as hand gloves, gowns/aprons etc.

I NEED A POSITIVE COMMENT BASED IN THIS ARGUMENT. BETWEEN 150-200 WORDS

Most of the elderly at their end-of-life stage do not die at home as it is their desire. Despite the development of palliative care programs, it has remained a challenge to ensure that most of the elderly die in their homes. One of the main reasons that have made it difficult is the absence of a family caregiver who is willing to take care of an elderly patient. A patient who is at the end-of-life stage is supposed to have a person that is close to him or her so as to give them the attention they require. For elderly, having a committed family member would be significant because it gives them a sense of belonging and satisfaction, even as they near their death. However, it is hard to find such family caregivers, because most of them prefer taking their elderly relatives to a hospital where they can receive professional assistance. Moreover, few home caregivers have been trained to provide healthcare service properly; all these factors make it hard for attention to be given to elderly patients in their homes (Hudson, 2003).

As a nurse, one can support their clients during the end-of-life treatment by approaching the family member that is recommended by a patient and explain the need of having home-based care. It would be a key factor in ensuring that the family members understand the dynamics of providing care to the elderly from home. It would also be a way of ensuring that family members agree to take care of a patient, since they would be convinced from a professional point of view. Moreover, as a nurse, I would do my best to assist these family members in any way to ensure the comfort of a patient. For instance, a nurse can constantly visit a patient and provide the necessary care at home (Hudson, 2003).

Re:Topic 1 DQ 1

My vision of a healthy community would be a place where people are outdoors, physical activity is high priority.  Fast food establishments were very rare, people love eating at home, preparing food from their gardens.  Smoking was nonexistent.  Drug abuse was unheard of.  People knew their neighbors, waved at them and invited them to block parties,  and could trust them for a strong neighborhood watch.

This is a utopia community.  The word comes from the Greek, it means “no place” (Wikipedia website, 2017).  Utopia does not exist, however, there are communities that provide increased quality of life through the environment that people live in.  In 2014 Washington D.C. was the healthiest city to live in.    The determination is based on an American Fitness Index.  It is data using measures on how well a community serves the recreational and fitness needs of its residents.  A new measure was added in, “the walking score”.  The obesity rates and smoking rates were down in these communities.  Residents rates of heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and general health are also important.  Cities need to prioritize the health of its residents.  The cities culture and politics need to be at work supporting health and lifestyle changes.  As just one example of this, let’s look at parks. First place winner Washington spends $398 per resident on its parks as compared with Memphis, last ranked at #50, which spends just $26 per resident (Haiken, 2014).

What if your community does not match your ideal?  This gives opportunity to focus on policies that affect communities ‘physical, social, and economic environment.  Rates of asthma have been rising in the population of low-income and people of color disproportionally.  How do policy and community affect asthma?  Studies found a strong correlation between air pollutants and asthma.  Public policies determine air pollution tolerances and how much specifics will be allowed to determine what is air pollution.  Advocates make change, they work locally to educate and inform the public and policy-makers about asthma and the correlation between pollution (Bell & Standish, 2005, p. 340).  We can be agents of change to create the communities we want to live in and raise a family in.

Hello i need a good and positive comment related with this argument .A paragraph  with no more 100 words.

Sherry Santineau

Re:Topic 4 DQ 1

“Successful communication between healthcare providers and their patients from different cultural backgrounds depends on developing awareness of the normative cultural values of patients and how these differ from the cultural values of most western medical professionals. When cultural differences are poorly understood, a variety of adverse clinical outcomes may result: reduced participation in preventive screenings, delayed immunizations, inaccurate histories, use of harmful remedies, non-compliance, and decreased satisfaction with care” (Carteret, 2011).

There are many cultural considerations to be aware of while interviewing Sue Li who is of Asian American ethnicity. The Asian community as a whole is conservative no matter the sex of the person. Sue Li should first be asked if she would prefer to speak with a male or female nurse. Since the patient is only 20 years old there may be some resistance in communication. The Asian Community has a strong bond with family. Their family extends to include all relatives not just immediate members. Loyalty is expected within the family, and dishonor or disgrace is not tolerated. Self-control is expected from all family members this demonstrates stamina and strength in crisis. In the healthcare setting Sue Li may be unwilling to show strong emotions, pain, or grief because of cultural values. Cultural beliefs about health and sickness often conflict with Western medicine, which prevent some Asian-Americans from seeking help for symptoms or sticking with treatment.

Another important consideration the nurse must check for is that Sue understands what she is being educated about. There may be a language barrier. Sue Li may give the nurse a gesture as though she understands when she is actually confused about her diagnosis or treatments. It will help if the nurse avoids asking yes or no questions. The nurse must also give the patient time if she wants to confer with her family. Unfortunately this can be time consuming and possibly delay care but building a trusting relationship is essential when dealing with different cultures (Carteret, 2011).

The Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) was created for the detection of abuse in pregnant women, and it is the oldest screening tool used today. It consists from three to five questions, and is also used to increase documentation in medical records. The questions assess physical, sexual, and emotional abuse prior to and during pregnancy. The AAS I usually conducted by the nurse but can be conducted other members of the hospital such as, counselors, physicians, or nutritionists. The tool is even translated into different languages, and it also includes body maps for documentation of injuries (Women’s Health, 2009).

If abuse is discovered the nurse should not only report it but offer support to Sue Li. The nurse can provide her with resources to receive help and education. For instance, a nurse could give Sue Li the phone number of a domestic violence hotline. Also, the nurse may show Sue to a phone and an opportunity to make the call. After the nurse assesses Sue’s home environment and determines if it is safe the nurse can refer her to a battered women’s shelter. The National Domestic Violence Hotline, 1-800-799-SAFE, is an excellent source for both patients and nurses. These sources will allow the nurse to give Sue Li additional knowledge, encouragement, and the assurance that she can come back to the hospital for additional help (Carteret, 2011).

Assignment 3: Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy

Overview

You are required to submit a scholarly paper in which you will identify, describe, research, and apply the concepts that underlie your personal philosophy for professional nursing practice.

This will help you identify your own values and beliefs about the established metaparadigms and metatheories of the discipline. It will also help you identify and articulate concepts relevant to your specific practice. This paper is intended to be an exercise in clarification and organization of your professional foundation. You are also required to provide a list of assumptions from personal nursing practice that illustrate the concepts and framework of your theory.

Your paper should follow a format that includes:

Nursing Autobiography: A brief (1 page) discussion of your background in nursing.

my background :   In regards to the professional field, I received my BSN degree in Habana Cuba in 1996 and received my RN license in the State of Florida on October 13, 2014. My nursing practice was as emergency care nursing and internal medicine unit at “Calixto Garcia Hospital”, Cuba for three years, where provide care for patients with life-threatening medical conditions and look after patients who have experienced invasive surgery, accidents and/or trauma. Careful assessment and monitoring of patient progress in order to watch for sudden or subtle changes in a patient’s medical condition that might require emergency intervention and heart monitoring as well as treatment adjustments.

Moreover,  I have been in the medical field in United State for more than 13 years working in Home Health Service and Rehabilitation Center in Miami. In my work experience I have been required to demonstrate many of the skills for the Family Nurse Practitioner. I have also undertaken leadership role during my career monitoring nursing students. I have done so successfully and have enjoyed this experience.

  • The Four Metaparadigms:Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on the basic four metaparadigms/concepts of patient, nurse, health, and environment.

  • Two Practice-Specific Concepts: Identification, discussion, and documentation from the literature of your perspective on at least two other concepts specific to your own practice.

  • List of Propositions: A numbered list of at least five propositions or assumption statements that clearly connect the concepts described.

Consider the following questions as you complete your various tasks related to this assignment.

1.

How do I define and employ the four basic metaparadigms of nursing theory in my professional practice?

2.

What are the major concepts I employ that are unique to my professional practice?

3.

What philosophies and theories from the literature of nursing and other disciplines/domains are consistent with these concepts?

4.

How are the concepts of transcultural nursing, the health promotion model, skill acquisition, role theory, and change theory specifically integrated into my philosophy and practice?

5.

What research supports these theories and concepts?

6.

How do I integrate role and change theory into my professional practice and how may these theories be applied to the organization in which I practice?

The paper is to be thoroughly researched and well documented, with relevant material from the nursing theorists presented incorporated into the paper. Use the current edition of the APAManual throughout the paper. Sources should focus on references from nursing theory but may also include conceptual and theoretical material from other professional domains. The paper, excluding references or appendices, is to be limited to 9 pages. Writing should be succinct and well organized, as it is impossible for the facilitator to evaluate form and content separately. References have to be peer review less than 5 years old

Due date 11/23/2016

Your philosophy/framework is to be given a title that is appropriate to its content and emphasis.
