Mental Conditions

This week’s first discussion forum will focus on individuals with mental conditions.

Our health, or the absence of such, can be very expensive. Many vulnerable populations simply do not have private funds available to pay for their care.  Relating your research to individuals with mental conditions, select a mental illness of your choice and answer the following questions:

  • What public financing resources are available to individuals with this particular mental condition?
  • What are the eligibility requirements and restrictions to receive these funds?
  • What happens if eligibility standards/requirements are not met by those with this illness?
  • Are there any alternative care options specific to this group that might be available?

Your initial contribution should be 250 to 300 words in length. Your research and claims must be supported by a minimum of two scholarly sources beyond your course text.  Use proper APA formatting for in-text citations and references as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.This week’s first discussion forum will focus on individuals with mental conditions.

Assignment 1: Exploration of a Journal Article in Sociology
Due Week 4 and worth 100 points

In the Strayer Online Library, go to the EBSCO-Host Academic database.  Find a recent research article from a scholarly journal in the field of sociology. It must have been published less than 12 years ago.  Be sure to select an article for which the full-text is available.  Actual journals for which full-text is available include Sociological Viewpoints, Sociological Forum, Qualitative Sociology, Sociology of Religion, Canadian Journal of Sociology and Rural Sociology, among others.In some cases, publishers do not make the full-text available on EBSCO-Host for 12 months after publication. Your selected article must meet all of the stated criteria or your assignment will not be accepted.  Before proceeding, ensure that your selected article meets the following criteria:

  1. Full-text is available in EBSCO-Host database
  2. Is a scholarly journal article in the field of sociology
  3. Was published less than 12 years ago.

Note: Do not use newspaper or magazine articles or Websites such as Wikipedia tomplete this assignment. Visit Strayer University’s guidelines against plagiarism.

Get a sense of what the article is about by reading some key sections.  Begin by reading the Abstract of the article.  Subsequently, read the Introduction and the Discussion sections.  Flip through the article and look at any figures or tables.
Write a 450-600 word paper (1.5 to 2 pages) in which you:

  • Identify your selected article in proper APA citation format.
  • Describe the type of article it is. In other words, is it primarily a review of existing research, or a report of new research? How can you tell? If it is a research article, what type of research was involved?
  • Summarize what you’ve learned about the content of the article. What were the major findings? How were they supported?
  • Explain how this article fits into the overall field of sociology. Identify the chapter of your textbook would this article go along with.
  • Explain how this article is different from articles in non-scholarly periodicals, such as magazines and newspapers. Explain any similarities.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Apply the sociological perspective to a variety of socioeconomic and political problems.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in sociology.
  • Write clearly and concisely about sociology using proper writing mechanics.

HSA525 WEEK 6 HOMEWORK

Homework
11.1 – The four fundamental factors that affect the supply of and demand for investment capital –
which affect interest rates – are productive opportunities, time preferences for consumption, risk,
and inflation. Explain how each of these factors affects the cost of money.
11.2 – The interest rate required by investors on a debt security can be expressed by the
following equation: Interest rate = RRF + IP + DRP + LP + PRP + CRP.
Define each term of the equation, and explain how it affects the interest rate.
11.5 – Briefly explain the following debt features:
(a) Indenture
(b) Restrictive convenant
(c) Trustee
(d) Call provision
11.6 – (a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

(e)
(f)

What are the three primary bond rating agencies?
What do bond ratings measure?
How do investors interpret bond ratings?
What is the difference between an A-rated bond and a B-rated bond?

Why are bond ratings important to investors?
Why are ratings important to businesses that issue bonds?

12.1 – A person is considering buying the stock of two home health companies that are similar in
all respects except the proportion of earnings paid out as dividends. Both companies are
expected to earn $6 per share in the coming year, but Company D (for dividends) is expected to
pay out the entire amount as dividends, while Company G (for growth) is expected to pay out only
one-third of its earnings, $2 per share. The companies are equally risky, and their required rate of
return is 15 percent. D’s constant growth rate is zero and G’s is 8.33 percent. What are the
intrinsic values of stocks D and G?
12.2 – Medical Corporation of America (MCA) has a current stock price of $36 and its last
dividend (Do) was $2.40. In view of MCA’s strong financial position, its required rate of return is
12 percent. If MCA’s dividends are expected to grow at a constant rate in the future, what is the
firm’s expected stock price in five years?
12.3 – A broker offers to sell you shares of Bay Area Healthcare, which just paid a dividend of $2
per share. The dividend is expected to grow at a constant rate of 5 percent per year. The stock’s
required rate of return is 12 percent.
(a) What is the expected dollar dividend over the next three years?
(b) What is the current value of the stock and the expected stock price at the end of each
of the next three years?
(c) What is the expected dividend yield and capital gains yield for each of the next three
years?
(d) What is the expected total return for each of the next three years?
(e) How does the expected total return compare with the required rate of return on the
stock? Does this make sense? Explain your answer?
12.7- Lucas Clinic’s last dividend (Do) was $1.50. Its current equilibrium stock price is $15.75,
and its expected growth rate is a constant 5 percent. If the stockholders’ required rate of return is
15 percent, what is the expected dividend yield and expected capital gains yield for the coming
year?

Week 4 discussion 1

This week’s first discussion forum will focus on persons diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Select an existing program or service delivery model in your community or surrounding environment (e.g., free-standing clinic, specialized treatment center) that provides services to those impacted by HIV/AIDS. Describe both, direct as well as indirect, costs associated with the program and how the program is evaluated (cost-benefit or cost-effective analysis). Chapter 7 of the course text defines these terms in more detail.

Your initial contribution should be 250 to 300 words in length. Your research and claims must be supported by a minimum of two scholarly sources beyond your course text.  This week’s first discussion forum will focus on persons diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Guidelines

Print This Page

A quality paper will meet or exceed all of the following requirements. Reference the Grading Rubrics section for each assignment’s specific point distributions. These assignments will be graded on the following criteria:

  • paper follows instructions as outlined;
  • paper has topical flow with like subjects in each paragraph;
  • paragraph transitions are present and logical;
  • quality of research topic, quality of paper information;
  • proper use of citations;
  • proper grammar; punctuation, spelling, etc.;
  • page count follows guidelines;
  • sentences are complete, clear, and concise;
  • writing style follows appropriate graduate college level writing;
  • paper content is thorough, and information included is relevant and provides depth and clarity of theories as well as theory application;
  • all key elements of the assignment are covered in a substantive way;
  • concepts are reviewed clearly, supported by specific details (examples or analysis);
  • there is correct use of vocabulary and theory;

Best Practices

Print This Page

  • Include all aspects of the assignment criteria outlined.
  • Use 12-point font (Arial, Times New Roman), double spaced, and 1” margins as a standard format.
  • Do not include extra lines between paragraphs, etc.
  • There should be theory used in each assignment as outlined.
  • Keller Graduate School (DeVry University) policies are in effect including the plagiarism policy; cite in text when quoting (copying information word for word) or using words/thoughts that are not your own.
  • Submit assignments in Word documents and templates provided only to the dropbox by the due date.
  • All papers should have a separate title page, which includes name, paper title, and university.
  • Paper should have topical flow with like subjects in each paragraph.
  • Proofread your papers before submitting. Spell check is not foolproof.
  • There should be minimal copied information (<5%); this just teaches you how to copy and paste. Use critical thinking skills to understand the material researched.
  • Papers should be third person.
  • Academic writing is a formal writing style, sharing information and facts (theory).
  • Fully describe the concepts and theories; what does the information mean? If you make a statement such as, “All people who break the law should improve their communication skills to stay out of jail,” you must substantiate that statement. If that statement is not your own thought or is a statistic, cite it. If it is your opinion, state that and explain what led to that conclusion. Provide enough information to validate and explain statements.

Question #1

T&D electric manufactures high-voltage switches and other equipment for electric utilities. One line that is staffed by three workers assembles a particular type of switch. Currently the threes workers have fixed assignments; each worker fastens a specific set of components on the switch and passes it downstream on a rolling conveyor. The conveyor has capacity to allow a queue to build up in front of each worker. The bottleneck is the middle station with a rate of 11 switches per hour. The raw processing time is 15 minutes. To improve efficiency of the line, management is considering cross-training the workers and implementing some form of flexible labor system.

a)      What is the critical amount of WIP that is needed by this line?

b)      If the current throughput is 10.5 switches per hour with an average WIP level of 7 jobs what is the average cycle time?

c)      What is the practical worst case throughput of the line?

d)     Is there any room for improvement on this line?

Question #2

Floor-On, Ltd., operates a line that produces self-adhesive tiles. This line consists of single-machine stations and is almost balanced (i.e., station rates are nearly equal). A manufacturing engineer has estimated the bottleneck rate to be 2200 cases per 16-hour day and the raw process time to be 30 minutes. The line has averaged 1,500 cases per day, and cycle time has averaged 5 hours.

a)      What is the estimated average WIP level?

b)      How does the performance of the average throughput compare to the practical worst case throughput?

c)      What would happen to the throughput of the line if we increased the capacity of bottleneck station and held the WIP at its current level?

d)     If after process improvements the ten machines that required ten workers to run them are no longer needed. Instead five workers are now needed what would you do with the remainder of workers not working on that line anymore? (And please don’t fire them)

Assignment
To complete the following assignment, go to this week’s Assignment link in the left navigation.

Final Project

A Final Project is due the last class session.  The Final Project will contribute 30% to the course grade.

With instructor approval, students will select an organization that either has or is experiencing challenges with its compensation and benefit system.  The student will provided a brief historical view of the organization, an assessment of their current challenge, a review of other organizations who had a similar situation and the strategy they devised to address the issue, theories and strategies that should be contemplated to address the situation and, finally, a recommendation to management on how to address/resolve the situation.  Importantly, the student should ensure any recommendations are based on solid research and analysis and reflect a comprehensive solution to the problem.

The research paper should integrate items discussed in class, textbook material, and additional information gathered from secondary or primary sources.  A minimum of eight credible sources (other than the course textbook) should be used to develop your final project paper.  Research topics must be reviewed in advance with the instructor.

Writing the Compensation and Benefits Paper
These papers are to reflect the current “state of the art” in the area and should reflect both academic and professional (practical) orientations. Your final paper should be eight- to ten- double-spaced pages in length (exclusive of Appendix, References, Exhibits, etc.) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide. This final paper should review the available research, discuss the implications of that research for the topic area, and provide conclusions. The paper should be organized into the following areas:

  1. Introduction: The area of research should be described and the purpose of the research. That is, describe the topic area in terms of (1) its relationship the topic and (2) what you want to be able to contribute to the training literature by writing this paper. Your introduction must include a succinct thesis statement.
  2. Review of the literature: Organize the literature into logical streams of thought related to your topic area. Within each of these areas summarize what the literature has to say. Be sure to indicate in your discussion whether the information is based on empirical data or analysis of the author.
  3. Implications of the literature: Again, organize the implications of the literature in a manner that logically builds the case for your conclusions (which you will present in the next section). For each of your implications be sure to reference the literature related to that implication. Be sure to indicate whether the implication is one that has already been made in the literature or if this is one that is original to you through your own analysis. You should identify in this section important areas related to your topic that are missing from the literature. As appropriate within a business report, it is important to use section headings to organize your key points.
  4. Conclusions: This is where you tie all the pieces together. Make sure your conclusions are organized in a logical order that synthesizes your major points relative to the purpose of your paper. Be sure that your conclusions are justified and have credible support.  Inspire your audience to think about the practical application of your topic.  Remember, this is the last thing you are leaving with your reader so make the context of your message clear, communicate the impact of your topic, and leave a lasting impression.

Remember, your paper:

  • Must include a title page according to APA style.
  • Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement.
  • Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought and analysis.
  • Must include section headings to organize your key points clearly.
  • Must include citations to references that support the assertions made and facts presented in the paper.
  • Must conclude a conclusion paragraph that ties directly back to your thesis statement.
  • Must use APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide to document all sources.
  • Must include, on the final page, a Reference List that is completed according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.

Assignment
To complete the following assignment, go to this week’s Assignment link in the left navigation.

Compensation Philosophy

In a 3-5 page paper, outline the current compensation philosophy for your organization.  Evaluate this current philosophy and propose ways to enhance or revamp the current compensation philosophy to meet the changing needs of the organization and its employees. Identify key factors within the internal and external environment including the mission and strategic focus of the organization, as well as the financial and cultural aspects of your organization (i.e., you cannot have a compensation philosophy where you “lead” the market if your organization does not have the financial resources) that should influence this philosophy.  The proposed philosophy itself should be no more than a short paragraph.  The remaining portion of your paper should be devoted to supporting your choice of that philosophy within your chosen organization by identifying the key factors that should contribute to its development.

Carefully review the Grading Rubric for the criteria that will be used to evaluate your assignment.
