Assignment 2: Unhealthy Lunches Drive-In Don’s fast food restaurant sells the most delicious burgers in town at the most affordable price. Elementary and high schools in the vicinity have contracted with the restaurant to serve burgers during lunch hour. However, the county health department’s one-year study shows that children from these schools have the highest cholesterol, are the most obese, and are the least active. George and Mary’s son, Randall, 12, attends one of the schools where Drive-In Don’s foods are served. He suffers from extreme obesity and high cholesterol and runs the risk of diabetes. George and Mary have sued Drive-In Don’s and the school, alleging that Drive-In Don’s is engaging in illegal deceptive advertising of its foods and is not truthful to customers. Further, the lawsuit states that the restaurant purposely fails to provide consumers details of the ingredients of its food products. II. Discussion Questions/Posts: 10% total course grade – 5 total discussion forums

Students are required to submit discussion posts for each graded discussion forum.  There must be one original substantive post AND at least two substantive replies to your classmates’ posts for each graded forum.  The average of the five discussion forum grades will constitute 10% of your overall course grade. Correct grammar, capitalization, punctuation, complete sentences, and CITATION of your sources (textbook readings with page numbers and textbook citation; assigned video instruction; outside research sources but PLEASE do NOT use Wiki sources) must be included in your posts.  Please note that a post of just a few sentences is NOT sufficient. Failure to post before the time limit will result in a grade of zero for that forum. NO extensions will be given for Discussion Forums as ALL forums are open on August 24 and close on September 6 and 20; October 4 and October 14 (please review course blueprint for specific information). You can and should work ahead on discussion forums as you have approximately two weeks to complete each module’s discussion forums. Questions will regularly be posted on the discussion board.

Scenario

Compassion and Ethics: Annie, a 27-year old woman with two children, began experiencing severe pain in her abdomen and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Brown, a gastroenterologist, who ordered a series of tests. While conducting a barium scan, a radiologist at Community Hospital noted a small bowel obstruction. Dr. Brown recommended surgery and Annie agree.

After surgery, the operating surgeon, paged Mark over the hospital intercom and Mark returned his call. “Well surgery is over and your wife is recovering nicely in the recovery room,” Dr. Brown said. Mark was relieved until the Dr. Brown continued, “I am sorry to say that she has carcinoma of the colon and the cancer has spread to her lymph nodes and surrounding organs.” Before hanging up Mark told Dr. Brown, “Please do not tell Annie she has cancer I always want her to have hope.” Dr. Brown agreed, “Don’t worry, I won’t tell her. You can tell her that she had a narrowing of the colon.” Later in the hospital room, Annie asked Mark, “What did the doctor find?” Mark replied, “He found a narrowing colon.” “Am I going to be OK?” she said. Mark answered, “Yes, but it will take a while.”

Annie had one more surgery two months later in a futile attempt to extend her life. When Annie was admitted to the hospital for the last time, she was unaware that she was dying. One evening as Mark walked into her hospital room Annie said, “Could you please reschedule my appointment at the university? I will have to reschedule my appointment.
