The Stanford prison experiment had every intention of being just an experiment. However, as the time had progressed each had started taking on their assigned role and it had gone from an experiment to an actual prison within the matter of a couple days. The guards had started to change after the first couple of days from looking at this as an experiment and treating it as a prison. The prisoners had started to riot very quickly because of the action of the guards and the situation had quickly gotten out of control. What the experiment was supposed to achieve is how people would react when put into that environment. What the experiment had achieved was that guards would instantly take control of the situation and take into their own hands how to break the prisoners so that they would follow orders and punishment was used rather harshly. What the experiment had uncovered was that the person would revert to a state of shyness to at which try and keep dignity, the guards most likely use the extreme measures as a first resort which was seen in the experiment.

The one thing that can be taken away from this project and be applied to prisons is that make sure guards are aware that they should only have to use the extreme on prisoners who do fight back and make their job hard. The reason why I would recommend this is because the actions at which the guards take causes the prisoner to revert to the shyness so that they can protect their dignity. After watching the video, I am surprised to see that the guards in only a couple days had started to lose sight of the true purpose of the experiment and at which had turned the experiment into a full functioning prison.

In the video Quiet Rage: The Stanford Prison Experiment, the main goal was to test the psychological and behavioral consequences of becoming a prisoner and a prison guard. A group, consisting of 24 people was selected to play the roles of inmates as well as officers. This experiment was set to last for two weeks of observation.  But, it came to an end in less than one week. Things got out of control and what was set to be an experiment became a real-life prison scene. There were officers abusing their power causing inmates to rebel. Some inmates stuck together even though officers considered them ” well behaved”, they refused their privilege until all inmates were going to receive the same treatment.

My recommendation would be for the inmates to respect the officers and for the officers to not mistreat the inmates. Both parties play a role in what takes place in prison. There is no need for innocent inmates to be receiving push-ups, or having their beds taken away because one of their peers are violating. Working in this field, one thing that I’ve learned is that when your fair and firm, things operate a lot easier with less resistance from the inmates.
