Assignment 5: Research Paper
In this assignment, you will write a research paper on the “Current changes in
long-term care.”
Each week, you will work on a portion of your paper, so you will have completed the final paper
by the time it is due in Week 6.
The final paper should adhere to the following guidelines:
• The paper should be a 10–15 page Microsoft Word document, excluding the reference
and title pages.
•
The paper must have a title or cover page. The cover page must include your name and
course.
•
The title or cover page must be followed by an abstract of 100–200 words.
•
The paper must use the APA style for citing sources and references.
The paper must have a minimum of 10 current references. Note that primary peerreviewed references are preferred. You can also include secondary sources such as the
U.S. Census and epidemiological data and the National Center for Health Statistics.
Week 1 This week:
Conduct an in-depth literature review of scholarly journals for current changes in
long-term care. Choose a particular long-term care facility on which you would want to base
your research work. Submit your choice to the facilitator for approval as early in the week as
possible.
Research the South University Online Library and the Internet to read about your chosen longterm facility.
Create a one-page synopsis of the current changes in your preferred long-term facility. In the
synopsis, discuss about your preferred facility and provide a rationale for your preference. In
addition, include a list of five preliminary references for possible use in the assignment. The
references should be in the APA style.
Submit your synopsis in a Microsoft Word document to the W1: Assignment 5 Dropbox by
Tuesday, October 25, 2011.
After the facilitator approves your topic, you may begin working on your research paper.

Week 2 Assignment 4: Research Paper
This week, you will begin working on your research paper. Each week, a two-page
paper covering specific topics to consider when analyzing the current changes in your
preferred long-term facility is due. Using the information learned in the course, in
combination with outside references, prepare and discuss the following topics:
•
Identify the key public and private sources of reimbursement available in the
facility.
•
Discuss the various forms of cooperation and integration existing in the facility.
•
Discuss the ways in which quality and cost are controlled in the facility.
• Discuss the ethical aspect of access to care in the facility, including rationing.
You can refer to online references such as EBSCOhost, SocINDEX, Cumulative Index
to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), or PubMed for further information on
the preferred long-term facility.

Week 4: Assignment 4: Final Project
This week, you will continue working on your research paper (due Week 6). During this
week, you will be identifying and discussing the changes brought in the
long-term care system to make it reach full status as a competition-driven system. In
this week’s paper, discuss the following topics:
• Discuss the changes made in the control mechanisms (external and internal) of
the facility in order to control the management, financing, and quality in the
facility.
• Discuss the changes taking place in long-term care reimbursement system in
order to provide better reimbursement options both to consumers and providers.
• Identify the various government and private resources available to assist
providers in developing and maintaining quality improvement programs in the
facility.
• Discuss the changes made in the efforts of providers to accommodate the
changing magnitude of the day-to-day needs of long-term care consumers.

Week 5: Assignment 4: Research Paper
This week, you will continue to work on your paper by creating an introduction. You will
also be taking your work from Weeks 1–4 and combining it all into a draft of your final
paper. The paper at this point will not be fully completed. For Week 6 you will complete
the conclusion of the paper. You will receive detailed feedback from your instructor
regarding your draft assignment. In Week 6 you are expected to incorporate any
changes that your instructor has suggested.
The paper should adhere to the following guidelines:
The length of the draft paper should be 9 to 12 double-spaced pages (not including the
title and reference pages).
The main sections should include a:
• Title page
• Introduction
• Body of paper (include subheadings)
• Reference page(s)
• The paper must use the APA format for citing sources and references.
The introduction (1-2 pages) should include the following points:
• Purpose or objective of the research paper
• An overview of the research paper
