On first assumption of communication its often possible to just focus on the ways in which we communicate verbally. The vocabulary we use, the tone of a persons voice, the speed and pace in which we speak and the clarity and brevity of the conversation. (Funnell 2005) The purpose of this essay is to clarify the different ways in which we communicate verbally and non – verbally whilst also focusing on barriers to communication and the benefits that effective communication can have on a patient and the therapeutic relationship between nurse/client.
