Community organizing can have a profound effect on the community in disease prevention as well as facilitate an increase in health and well-being. Through collaboration, individuals are empowered to make a change, however many individuals are not experts in collaboration. Reflect on the video in which Dr. Chávez gave a description of community-based participatory research. Consider how this type of research can be effective in the design and outcomes of community organizing.
In preparation for this week’s Discussion, review this week’s video program with Dr. Chávez, “Community Organizing for Public Health,” and the assigned Web site, Prevention Research Center of Michigan: Community Garden Storytelling Project of Flint.
• Select one population in your area (Massachusetts) and discuss a specific public health issue.
• Identify one principle of community-based participatory research and discuss how this principle might be used to alleviate the identified current health issue in your community
